VWvortex - Guest Opinion: I Am Never Buying An Automatic! | « » 6:23 PM 9-6-2005 | |
|
by: Bill Cho (VMG moderator, jebglx)“I am never buying an automatic.” So the teenaged Bill used to say. My parents drove automatics as did the uncool kids in high school. I needed to feel absolute control over a car, though some would say about my driving habits, there is no control. I wanted to make the decision on when to change gears - the very idea of leaving it up to the car to decide made my blood boil. It's a conspiracy! How DARE they even invent such a contraption!! Full Story...

I only have a 60 mile round trip to work and after seven years I was feeling it. Add to that arthritis in my left ankle and I was done with manuals. I was looking for a W8 Passat but found the 05 GLI with Tiptronic. I bought it that same dealer visit. You catch a lot of crap for owning an auto but it is my money and my choice. I think I see a DSG GTI in my future...

I understand where you are comming from. I'll stick with manuals. But when it come to work vehicles (I work in contstruction) I'll take an automatic. After a long day at work I'm tired and don't want to think about it most of the time. When I am out driving for my love of driving, I want the manual.

I can understand wanting an automatic. When you are doing highway commuting there is not much fun in that drive and not much gear changing unless you hit annoying traffic jams. Then you reach the city with stop lights and signs everywhere with cars leaping in front you too. yeah.. A stick shift can be a job.I still have a ways to go before I get tired of shifting. I am 36 yrs old and still love heel-toe downshifing on the rural roads. Loving the 6 speed on my 20th GTI

I love my VWR32. After many a demo drive on the new GLI, I'm really liking the DSG transmission! Rev-matching downshifts and quick upshifts are simply amazing!Tough choice? Only if they make the R36 w/ DSG option - I'd seriously consider DSG!

I think it happens to us all (unless you never gave manuals a chance in the first place). My dad drove stickshift for 29 years...from the day he got his license to 1995...and then when he had to get a new car he got an automatic because he was sick of driving stickshift. As much as I like driving stick now, I suspect I will be much the same...by the time my 40s roll around I'll be thinking an automatic will look pretty good (assuming cars will even have transmissions as we know them at that point...). With DSG and CVT, there are two fantastic alternatives to the automatic that are 2-pedaled. At this point in my life, if I had to get a 2 pedal car I would refuse to get a standard torque converter auto or an SMG (too rough)...it would be DSG or CVT. I just hope moe manufacturers use 'em in the future.

i have driven both.....granted the manual can be fun.....i however prefer auto....mainly becuase i go out late at night after work and i am usually not in the mood to shift gear...just sit back and drive...granted there are times when i wish i had a tip....but for now i will stick with my auto....unless it dies or i get a old vw...which will be for weekends so i can have the option of driving manualnice article

for a car that will never see spirited driving, automatic is the way to go. But I hate not being able to pick your own gears. Sometimes I want to floor it in 5th instead of downshifiting. Can't do that with a pure auto.DSG is good, but I still like the feeling you get when you do the perfect double clutch downshift or go from 5th to 3rd and floor it

I can feel what you are saying; I used to be the same way!I used to only drive manuals thinking they were far superior. But something interesting happened along the way. While my cars went into service bay I would be handed the keys to vehicles with automatics - everything from a Ford Taurus to a Mitsubishi Mirage. The thing is - the automatic in these cars made me WANT them. As crappy as they were - I loved just throwing the thing in 'D' and driving. Right now I am almost 32 and while I still have the urge to drive a manual transmission - the 60 mile commute each day makes me think otherwise towards the end of it. I even took someones Mazdaspeed Miata out one day to see how I would like it as a commuter. Uh.. no! Maybe the NC w/ 6 speed auto - but I just couldn't dig it. A good balance is probably a comfortable weekday commuter w/ auto and a weekend autocrosser w/ stick.

I go back and forth. I had my '03, B5.5 GLS, 1.8t, 5spd in to have the damn water pump changed and they gave me a loaner...an '04 B5.5 GL, 1.8t, AT. I must admit, it was a nice change of pace. And it wasn't as slow as thought it would be. It was surprisingly responsive. The best thing about it was, I didn't notice that stinking throttle-by-wire as much. I do prefer an auto in my winter car.

I am desperately clinging to my twenty-some years of carefully mastered heel-and-toe ability... but a 90 mile valley-to-Bay commute, too many freeways (I have to drive an hour to find a sequence of more than two consecutive corners), too much traffic, etc etc is conspiring against me. That and the damned DSG is so good. Is a clutch pedal truly old-fashioned? Some archaic pleasure from a bygone era?Of course, with two feet and only two pedals, there is now the skill of left-foot braking to master... hmm...

I sort of agree, if you're in a bunch of stop and go traffic, the fun of a manual transmition is gone so why bother. That being said, I wish he would have made more of a difference between DSG/SMG and traditional automatics/Tiptronic. To me they're apples and oranges. I probably will buy a DSG or some SMG variant in my lifetime but I will never buy a traditional automatic again, not a chance.

Yea I think that will be a question everytime someone buys a DSG. Did Bill's article encourage you to buy this??? Bill, you are making me feel old. I just put a deposit to buy a 2006 Jetta TDI, and the idea of an automatic had first appeared acceptable. That horrible thought quickly drove me to find an available manual ASAP! I am not old yet! However, after reading your article I feel ok about buying an automatic. It is going to be the wifes car after all. What have you done to me!!! I am losing my youth!
Megasquirt requires lots of time and reading, but it has great ability and possibilities.

Bill it was good to read your article as I tend to agree with you on the choice of the manual transmission for spirited driving in the mountains or on any curving road for that matter. Several years ago you helped me out looking for a part on my B4 Passat, with a manual transmission of course. In reading your article I see you have parted with your B4 also...unfortunately I lost mine in a head on collision as a lady choose to come over the double yellow line to crash test her vehicle with mine. Fortunately we both walked away without injury, however this demonstration of superior crash qualities then drove me to purchase another B5.5 Passat Variant. Trying to get a Passat with a manual transmission was very hard to come by on short notice and so I had to compromise and settle for a Tiptronic. This is the first automatic I have had in 36 years and have found it to be a real plus driving in all the traffic we have in the greater New York metro area. I do miss driving the manual and still have access to our old 89 Jetta when I need to row through the gears. I'm so glad I took my wife's advice in holding on to the old 89 Jetta as it is both very economical to drive and fun being so light compared to the B5.5. The Jetta is great for around the town jaunts with the B5.5 really showing it's ability on the long highway jaunts. Perhaps with the DSG coming out soon it will prove to be the best compromise between manual and automatic? BTW your not as old as you make yourself out to be, I think I have a few years on you so don't fret and take it gracefully, everyone will get there sooner or later.

I'm 35 (not young, not old) and I still would not buy anything but a traditional manual transmission car if the car is question is available with one. I drive an A2 GTI with a 5-speed as my daily driver and occasionally a Eurovan VR6 (automatic, no manual available in that car). For me, the argument about city traffic or bumper-to-bumper traffic is phooey. With a properly-shifting manual transmission (linkage in good shape, light shifter, and light clutch), it's pretty effortless. The mistake that one can make that makes all the difference is sitting/idling with the clutch pressed in. That's what tires your leg out and what is not good for the car long-term anyway. I use neutral a lot when idling at traffic lights. And with careful "pacing" of yourself and learning your car's gears in bumper to bumper traffic it's pretty easy to learn to let the car to creep along at idle RPMs in gear w/o your foot on the clutch and w/o shifting unnecessarily.Manumatics just don't do it for me. We have a '00 BMW 3-series in the household with a Steptronic and I've used it and it just is not the same at all. It's numb/boring. I hate driving that car (and this is a BMW 3 we're talking about!) and would never own one like it (with a auto/tip). One car on my "what to own next" list is the Audi A3 and as much as I'd like the upcoming VR6 (I prefer a normally aspirated V6 over a turbo I-4), it will only be offered with DSG here. And yeah I know that in the 2.0T version the DSG is a little quicker than the manual version. However that extra what...0.5 seconds...is not going to stir my soul like shifting gears *entirely* on my own does. So the manual 2.0T would be the only choice for me in that car.

Well, I can't say I'm there yet. I'm only 40, and the arthritis in my left hip isn't tooooo bad yet. I'll be rowing the boat for a few years yet. My 2 brothers are quite a bit older than I, and they're opposite on this issue. One has an auto Miata as a weekend car, and the other owns nothing but sticks whether for commuting or for fun. The sway bars in his cars are thick enough to rattle your teeth on bumps... how cool is that?!! I still feel that way myself, so that's what I'm sayin' for now. If my hip gets worse (much worse) then maybe I'll reconsider. The only auto I had was a clean '69 VW fastback. It was bought with the intention of converting to a 4-speed. The car was just too original to modify and it was going to require grafting sections from a donor car for the shifter and running a clutch tube. (The tube I knew about, but I thought the shifters bolted in the same way ) Because of that, I traded it for my '59 beetle. Other than that, the only auto that has ever sat in my driveway is my wife's car. She used to drive a stick, but with the baby...

I too will be getting an automatic next time around. Don't get me wrong - I love my 5spd Jetta, but with a 55 mi commute everyday in heavy traffic, it just gets annoying.

i went from a 5 speed jetta mkIII, to an auto NB 1.8T and lovin every minute of it in Atlanta. My commute is 8m and i barely get over 35-40mph. Im not a speed demon but I do get on it here and there. I knew that the mod's i was planning would give me some xtra punch and I dont "need" that manual feeling. I just get in and go.I do miss the manual but its no biggy and Im not tracking it, although I want to and I know thats where Ill want the manual. Now DSG or trip Id love to have but....

My next car would probably be a automatic... well waiting for the B6 Passat TDI wagon--with DSG and keep my A4 Golf TDI 5-speed as the daily driver. Why? Sports injuries leaving me with an okay left knee. An automatic is great as a backup car

Hopefully this doesn't turn into an auto vs. stick debate...I found myself saying "Yeaup." to myself as I read your statement about WF. I remember sitting in the middle of what, RT 18?, with traffic backed up because one part of the route was below water. Trembling left leg was definitely felt.
