 Rank your Porsche preference?« »

Here are 10 Porsches that you have to rank in order of preference. While its far from every Porsche ever made, it gives a good cross section of various eras and types.

962 lowenbrau

996 GT3

550 Spyder

911 Carrera 2.7RS

928 S4

924 Carrera GT

968 Turbo RS

917 Pink Pig

908

Cayman S

So if driving a Miata makes someone "gay", does driving an Escalade make someone "black"? Think about it.

Wow.... that's a really tough one.

1) 968 Turbo RS
2) 924 Carrera GT
3) 996 GT3
4) 550 Spyder
5) 962 Lowenbrau
6) 911 Carrera 2.7RS
7) 917 Pink pig
8) 908
9) Cayman S
10) 928 S4

Your car does not have soul, you just have a pitiful selection of adjectives in your vocabulary.

550 Spyder

911 Carrera 2.7RS

928 S4

924 Carrera GT

968 Turbo RS

917 Pink Pig

908

Cayman S

that "962 Lowenbrau" is actually a Holbert HR-1. 3.2 litre air cooled 750hp? yuck. if i had the cash to dump into a GTP it would be the water cooled 2.65 litre with over 930hp. if you have GTP money why limit yourself to only 750hp? nice car, but not $1.5 million nice. that money would buy a whole bunch of Spice GTP-Ls which would be more fun. the only good part about that car is that Holbert built it.

996 GT3? excellent car.

550 Spyder? i don't like the idea of $30,000 engine rebuilds on a car made from unobtanium.

911 Carrera 2.7RS? i already have a car that makes more noise than it does speed, it's called a Jetta.

928 S4? definitely. ttotally incredible machine.

924 Carrera GT? hey! one i actually could fix and not have to pay someone else $70/hour to work on for me!

968 Turbo RS? only if i ran it on low boost, aviation fuel is hard to come by around here.

917 Rosa Schwein? only as a conversation piece. motor isn't worth the money you put into it and that car is too much of a hairball. there's other 917s i'd rather own, even if I had the money for this one.

908? plastic Porsches rule! i'd be all over this car, but not as much as a 909 from the same era.

Cayman S? without a doubt! top of the list.

so in order:

Cayman S
Carrera GT
968 RS
996 GT3
928 S4
HR-1
908
917
550
911 RS 2.7

no. history has nothing to do with it, this was a list based on preferences, not performance or history. if i could realistically own either one... i prefer the Porsche 909 over the 917, but that doesn't mean that i disavow the 917's contribution to Porsche history.

sure, just like i can prefer to realistically say i'd rather live with a Carrera GT and it's 4-cylinder turbo instead of a Furhmann 4-cam and a motor that cost $30,000+ (and several months as you wait for parts to be custom machined) to rebuild.

you're taking this out of context. this is an arbitrary list. i happened to put the cars in the order of what i'd realistically put them if i had to drop the cash on the table and call them my own... even assuming that cash is not an option.

the Porsche 695 is slow and noisy by today's standards. so what does it mean when i'd say that i'd rather have a 695 over a 2.7RS? come on, kick that mind reading into overdrive.

im not taking it out of context an i have no objection to your list, its your preferance. you do this all the time though obin, you say one thing which is just not right and then try to justify it through roundabout means. i was objecting to your statement that a 911 2.7 RS makes more noise than speed. like i said, it's still not a slow car at all even by todays standards.

ted

the "more noise than speed" refers to the fact that the 924 Carrera GT, or even a mildly modded 944 turbo is just as fast and corners even better while registering WAY lower on the decibel meter.

there seems to be this "aura of unrealism" that surrounds some old cars. people seem to think that what was high tech 35-40 years ago is still cutting edge today. on the same token just because something like the 2.7 RS was fast back then, that speed is extremely rare today and you'd have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to even come CLOSE.

nope, wrong, don't mean to poop on your parade... but 35 years of technology have made that 2.7 RS no faster than many modded front wheel drive sport compacts today. there's a huge log of lap times, autocross times, open road race times, and drag race times which prove that point. that would have seem impossible a long time ago, but it's a daily reality now.

i fully realize for example that though my 1984 Porsche was fast for its day... the performance is actually on par with many modern family sedans. i'm not going to go around saying "this car is still the fastest thing in the world... oh and have you seen that new show 'Knight Rider'? man that car is cool."

in club racing, the 2.7RS is in the same class as a bone stock 993, 911 RS America, or a 944 Playboy Cup car. all of those cars are SLOWER than a 924 GTS, or base model 996. i'm not saying that any of those cars are slow, but the difference between a 2.7 RS and a 993 is that one goes around the track making that loud "RRAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" sound and the other silently whistles by often a second or two a lap faster (due to better suspension, brakes, and weight distribution).

I can't believe how many people put the 962 so low on the list. It was an easy number one when I looked at the options. Dominated sports car racing even more than the 917.

Oh and regarding the 2.7 RS comments, an entire aftermarket industry and I might be wrong, but some people like to hear their speed as well.

yes it did, but that HR-1 isn't the 962 i'd buy if i had $1.5 million sitting around. there's other 962s out there that are faster, better handlers, more comfortable, cost less money, etc.

yes it did, but that HR-1 isn't the 962 i'd buy if i had $1.5 million sitting around. there's other 962s out there that are faster, better handlers, more comfortable, cost less money, etc.

Nothing in this thread asked to rank best buy or most bang for the buck.

Unless you are getting a Dauer, a 'comfortable' 962 is a complete oxymoron. Even a Dauer is pushing it.

the later water cooled 962s with the carbon fiber tub and the ground effects tunnels are the best ones. the HR-1 is an air cooled car with a higher center of gravity, lower power to weight ratio, more drag, and a gearbox that feels like you're dragging a shovel through quick dry cement.

the good thing about the HR-1 is that it's a Holbert car and it has A LOT of history. that's really neat, but it doesn't mean it's a better car than the HR-7. if this thread had a Kremer CK6 or one of the late C1 tubs with the 2.65 turbo built in 1989 then i'd be all over it like white on rice.

of note... i have a poster of that HR-1 in my living room. it's the only 962 poster i have offhand.
