 VWvortex: First Drive - 2006 R32« »

“A nice car. But it looks a bit too aftermarket, don’t you think?” The car in question is Volkswagen’s R32, the flagship V6-powered, all-wheel-drive Golf launched in Europe in 2001. And the person asking the questions? One Rudiger Folten, the German-born designer responsible for the look of every hot Golf since the original Mk1 GTI of 1976.

The original R32, explains Rudiger, caught everyone by surprise. Spurred on by the realization that its beloved GTI had become a joke in enthusiast circles, the more focussed R32 was rushed through to production, barely pausing to have some 18-inch OZ alloys, painted brake calipers and twin exhaust pipes added. The result, as the VW design veteran admits, could have leapt straight off the pages of a modified car magazine – albeit the reader’s rides section rather than the center spread... Full Story...

Paint the brushed grill flat black, replace the muffler with twin pipes squeezed closer together, and deliver it in a 4-dr painted Nimbus Grey Pearl effect and I think I could deal with it.

^^^ right. the tail pipes remind me of a girl I know who is gorgeous...but she has a huge gap in her front teeth. The interior looks awesome, and I think that the MKV looks actually work well. $41k in the UK is just retarded. I was relieved to see the ~$30k more powerful 300bhp version is slated for the US.

Finally the US gets a better car than Europe...at least for a little while.

Awesome.

Question:

Will the R36 have a very limited production run similar to the previous model, or will I actually have the chance to buy one before they are 'sold out'? Please help.

Where do I sign up for an R36? I would really appreciate the diappearance of the chrome trim though. The front end would look way better blacked out like the GTI. I can live with it though since the rest of the car rocks. Hopefully the R36 is a reality and VWOA should consider a Jetta version for NA as well.

I am just so sick of the "this is a more refined, more grown up machine...." line.

The R32 MK4 was HUGE success... why? because it was a great performing, great looking machine with a hint of snarl.

So why change that mix? doesn't make sense.. I am sure the mk5 is a superior machine, but the new look is just too high end... even the wheels are not as tough looking.
The final insult is to put 'that' chrome grill on the front...

The R32 (mk4) was a machine that I lusted for, this is just a quick golf IMO.

I am very disappointed.

Look at the cars in this class (evo, STI), and the most memorable from the past (integrale, Escort Cosworth)

too soft. !!!

I'm not sure why the author referred to the grill as 'chrome', but if you look at the close-up shot of the front end (and read past posts about the car), you'll see that it is aluminum, with more of a brushed finish.

Having started nearly 30 years ago with an Audi 100ls and then a diesel Rabbit, MkII Golf and finally my venerable MkIII Golf, the more recent MkIV's and V's just seem too big and heavy for me. HOWEVER, I did have to re-read the last paragraph several times...we may actually get an R36 with MORE hp and LOWER cost than what Europe is getting? I might be interested in that... the question is: Is it a sports car or simply a tarted up econobox (as is my MkIII...no denying it).

The article also said that the 4 motion could transfer 100% of torque to either the front or rear wheels. Is this a new system?

Agreed.. My bad, it is more of a brushed finish. But it looks very similar to the grille on the base Jetta, that was my point.
For the R32 it would have been more appropriate to use something more distinctive... say Carbon fiber....?

That's within a nit of how much the MKIV R32 cost there.

Love this car for the exact reason so many on this site bash it.

Its sophisticated and adult. Gone is the more boy racer look of the MK4 and the tuner crowd following. No one yacking about "slamming it" or throwing a set of LM's and badgeless grilles on it. Replacing it is a vehicle that not only looks better, but performs better.

Cant wait for this car.

Well done on the reiview Jamie, nice job. I like the r-32, a well thought out car. I have a much modified 95vr6 gti and Im happy with it. Im going to keep it as long as I can, kind of like an old, favorite pair of sneakers you refuse to throw out. Guess I'll just wait for the r-36 to come out, maby I'll make a "short timers calendar" till I can put a deposit down on one at the local dealer. I recently took my gti to a r-32 gtg. I had no trouble staying with them on the trip, the only time I noticed a difference was off the line, (roads were dry) so I couldnt note a difference in inclement weather driving. I really like the thought of all wheel drive, its the only thing I'm missing at this point so I guess I'll have to wait a little longer till I get my big mitts on one. Again, nice job on the reiview, you are always impartial and objective, and I enjoy reading them. Laters RK

it's all evolution, gentlemen. You can't have a car looking the same forever (except Porsche). Technology and safety dictate change - and dare I say, I'm starting to think it looks fine.

I'll take my R36 in black please - and before I pick it up please have the front metal painted black..mmm kay, thanks.

So I've seen it in person and personally I love the looks of the GTI better... but the AWD and VR6 3.6 would be so nice... my dileama!!! Should I go with looks before perfomance??? Timing wise either car would be okay. Seriously I'm split down the middle.

Not quite. It’s £4,000 ($7,050) more than a GTI, and doesn’t enjoy the same cult status

Give it some time, the R32 only just came out compared to the GTI...

Man, I really want one of these things. Silver DSG - and I hope we'll be able to get cloth/leather seats.

So do we know yet if this is going to be a multi-year run car? Obviously for the R32 is was at the end of the model life, but '07 is close to the beginning for the MkV, so is it safe to say (and hope) that they'll be selling it maybe in '08, '09, etc?
