Well I am not too sure how this got into a nationalism thing but since we are on the card....how can u call America when you are from ****** mexico!! Everytime I go to Mexico I feel like I might lose my life on the road...people just getting outta cars on the expressway, passing each other on on/off ramps, driving at constant break-neck speed, 15 people to one car, and THE MOTORCYCLIST ARE INSANE THERE....I have never been to mexico and remembered seening motorcyclist in full-gear...most of the time it was bermuda shorts, flip flops, and a t-shirt.

OK, I can see that you are severely challenged when it comes to geography. Hadn't you noticed that there is a little thing called "continent" that goes from Canada/Alaska all the way to the Land of Fire at Argentina???

As I already noticed you don't, that little thing is a continent, and that continent is curiously named "America" or "American Continent".

Now for some history.

That little piece of land was named "America" by a group of crazy spanish guys, leaded by an even crazier guy, Cristopher Colombus (have you heard about him???). That crazy, or dumb guy as people thought back then, realized that the earth was round and tried to travel to India...

But the crazy guy ran into that piece of land, that a guy called Americo Vespucio was the first one to sight. That piece of land was called America, after Americo.

And to make it even more complicated for you, they hadn't arrived to "your America"... (They got to an island that they called "San Salvador")

Now, I don't even dream about you getting this concept, America was divided into three big regions, North America (Canada, USA and Mexico), Central America (from Guatemala to Panama) and South America (from Colombia all the way down to Chile/Argentina).

I know, that stuff may be rocket science for you.

Now, I'm ready to blow away your little challenged mind, the country you live in is called "United States of America". Have you ever seen those T-Shirts with "USA" in front of them, or the Presidential seal?

The new continent was not named America by Columbus. In fact, until his death he did not even know he discovered a new continent.

Amerigo Vespucci was not the first one to sight that land. However he was the first to prove that it is, indeed, a new continent, and not East Asia as everyone still thought at that time.

There is even debate about who America was named after - Amerigo Vespucci or someone else connected with exploration. There was a book written about one possibility - the man who sponsored the explorer John Cabot, Richard Amerike.

Yes, I'm sure you'd kick ass if the point of his post was who can win the most prizes on "Where in the World is Carman Sandiago". But it wasn't . His point was that it's kind of ironic that you being from Mexico and all are bitching about Americans (People in the USA) not being able to drive when it has been his experience that the people that can't freaking drive are Mexicans. Make sense? Or is logic different in Mexico?

Now back to your history lesson.

Before lecturing others, one should get his own facts straight.

First, the geography: That's two continents. North America and South America - not one big continent. The area known as Central America is part of the North American continent.

And the History: Columbus (incedently, he was an Italian, with a commision from the Queen of Spain) did not name his "discovery" America, nor did the "crazy Spaniards" in his crew. Columbus initially did, in fact, beleive he was in India so he had no reason to name it anything. Further explorations by Columbus and others subsequently revealed this not be India, but a "New World" as far as Europeans were concerned. It was refered to simply as the New World at that time. (I'll leave out the whole bit about Viking explorers in Greenland and Newfoundland that predated Columbus by many years.)

Amerigo Vespuccci (another Itallian, BTW) claimed to have made threee voyages to the New World - in 1497, 1499, and 1503. He was not "the first one to sight" the New World. Contemporaries of Vespucci doubted his claims of the first two trips, as there was virtually no documented record of the trips. As a result, Vespucci presented detailed records of the 1503 trip in order to prove his accomplishment. Upon returning to Spain in 1504, Vespucci commisioned map makers to use these records to create the first map of the portions of the New World that he had explored. The map makers labeled the map with the name America after thier paying customer.

Later, as other cartographers, and early historians began to write down what they "knew", certain factual mistakes became popular knowledge (I'm sure you'll appreciate that!). Martin Waldseemuller a German mapmaker was one of the first to believe that Vespucci was the first European to reach the "New World." In 1507, he suggested they call it America and soon this name was used throughout and eventually used officially in the naming of the continent.

One panel, featuring Amerigo Vespucci, of the 12-panel map of the world by Martin Waldseemüller, 1507; the map was the the first to call the New World “America.”

<insert 400 or 500 years of history here about how geopolitacal boundries were formed.>

I just hate when someone get's on a high horse about a topic, and cites grossly inaccurate "facts" to show how superior a mind they have. I hate it even worse when I do that myself, so anyone is free to pick over my historical summary and correct me where I may be wrong.

Gee, thanks guys! I forgot to add this little factoid, in an attempt to keep the thread a little more on topic:

American, Sylvester Howard Roper (1823-1896) invented a two-cylinder, steam-engine motorcycle (powered by coal) in 1867. This can be considered the first motorcycle, if you allow your description of a motorcycle to include a steam engine.

Suprised no one else thought of this...

This all probably happened on the back side of a hill - bikes come over without knowledge (or vision) of the accident and then nail the brakes once they get over the top. That would explain why people are putting their hands up in the air..

Looks like they are all driving relatively spaced out, too, because the bikers are standing and have their bikes upright by the time the next wave comes over the hill (and the person has enough time to take another picture).
