A really crappy situation - <long> | « » 1:03 AM 11-11-2005 | |
|
Some may recall my thread on ZAINO products: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2264343And the damage that was caused to my new A3 by the dealership prior to delivery: http://www.flipdrive.com/photo...26e1a Apparently someone at the dealership decided to go at my new paint with a rotary. I didn't notice it when I picked it up because it was cloudy and overcast, and they had done a magnificent job at concealing the damage with layers of wax. One rainstorm later (1.5 weeks in to ownership), the wax came off and left me a damaged, ugly paintjob. Since then the dealership accepted responsibility and has had my car for 50% of it's new life. Mostly, at an auto body shop in East Pasadena where it's was buffed and polished some more. They delivered it to me today, after nearly 2 weeks without my own car (and as I drive their loaner). I was again perplexed that the damage still showed and overall, the condition of the new car, as a new car, was completely unacceptable. My coworker used the term "chalky" to describe the black paint. I refused the car and made them take it back to the dealership. Despite many requests through Audi of America and directly to the general sales manager at Rusnak, a new car is not in the books. Absolutely NO is what they said. And just recently, after thinking I had Audi of America on my side this whole time, they told me flat out they have sided with the dealership and that this is no longer their problem. Long story short, REALLY long story short, is I have everything documented very well, but Rusnak Pasadena refuses to acknowledge this is not the car I paid for. They acknowledge responsibility for the damage, but it's my problem now. Lemon Law can apply towards the VALUE of the car, so I might have something there, but going legal on this could take a lot of time and possibly $ I don't have to spend. They want me to come up on Saturday to review the damage with the GSM, so that we may once again jump through all the useless hoops of trying to remedy a well-beyond damaged vehicle they should have just replaced from the get-go. I'm taking witnesses, etc...but I'm feeling a little lost. Rusnak f'd up and they really are letting me have it. Have it with all the scratches and damage THEY caused. I don't know what to do at this point.

I'd also like to add that it's entirely possible there was more serious damage caused before I bought the car, that they did not disclose. I asked them, and they denied it. But people lie, don't they. I have talked to many shops and no one can figure out why a brand new car was buffed with a rotary. Also, it's mighty suspicious that there's a slight misalignment of the hood and right side of the bumper to the fender. And a tinny paint bubble on the left side fender. Could just be manufacuring anomaly, but if there's damage they concealed (well, there is with the paint...but they refuse to call it damage and they refuse to call it concealing by throwing gobs of wax on the car to hide this...), they're not only breaking the law, they're liable to be sued for a whole lot of $.

A few things . . . . cars can be damaged at port and will be "fixed" and there will be no documentation added to the vehicle's history. I'm surprised you couldn't find a competent detailer in So-Cal. I know what you're talking about . . . . its called hologramming. I've removed it before with a PC7424. With the right polishes and a little bit of effort, that haziness can come out easily. I don't believe lemon law applies in this case. You need to a) find a better detailer, b) just do it yourself Dave

Tarik- That's terrible, man. I hope crew217 is right that it can be fixed. You should be enjoying the car, not arguing with the dealership over it! Good luck. -Dave

Dave isnt there a monetary cap on that I think @ $3K and applys to anything that happens at the dealership as well. My 98 Jetta (traded in for A3), we only recently (2004)found out there was a ton of rear end damaged and repair, and I was never informed (I bought it new). My auto body guy says this was common. Tarik- that just sucks, but unfortunately with current lemon laws you cant expect them to replace the car (even though they should). What you should do is go to a top end body shop and get their opinion, also get an estimate for repainting the car, thats probably the most you could get out of them, just keep threatening them with court.

Well when I mean that there's no documentation . . . most of the time the dealer doesn't even know. The only indication there might be is a delay in the car getting to the dealership. Its happened to a few people i know. Like one guy who bought an R32 . . . car was delayed at port for an extra week. I know the two salesmen that sold him the car and the R32 owner. None of them knew that the car had undergone some bodywork until I looked at the vehicle. Repaint is a very very very bad idea. Most i'd do is have the body wetsand the clear and respray a layer of clear. Then again, I'm really surprised this bodyshop / detailer they sent the vehicle to didn't take out the hologramming. If I were in so-cal, i'd def help you out. http://www.autopia.org is a great place for all your detailing needs. For your car, I'd probably use the Menzerna system. Zaino Z-PC probably would take too long to get all of that out. Dave

Agreed, I meant to say he should just get an estimate as a max number ($$) to hold over their heads, maybe even a compensation figure (although I doubt it). Looking at the pictures it is defintly something that can be fixed by a good detailer, repaint would be way over the top.

I sure hope it's hologramming and that someone at some point will figure out the fix. I'm pretty busy with work and in my opinion, this is the dealerships responsibility. I'll try and find some information on the products you mentioned and present these to the dealer tomorrow. Hopefully that, plus a competent detailer can set this straight. I also noticed 2 tinny new dents on the hood. I'm fairly certain the longer it stays at the dealership, the worse this situation is going to get.

The best bet IMO is to go on autopia and find one of their professional detailers in your area. Get the dealer to pay that guy to fix the damage on the car. The detailers there know their ****. Dave

Crew217 is exactly right. It hard to tell from the pictures, but I didn't see anything that can't easily be taken care of with a PC7424, Lake County pads, and Menzerna IP and FPII, with a coat of FMJ on top. While I agree that it's the dealership's responsibility to set this right, I wouldn't trust them to do a good job, and they'll end up holding your car even longer. I would probably just settle for a few bucks comp, enough to pay a good detailer or even better buy the detailing products and do it yourself. It's a fun and rewarding hobby, and I've restored far worse paint on old cars to better than new condition. Good luck.

Ok, so the PC is a Porter Cable machine. Ok, got that after a few searches. The Menzerna IP is a polish. Got that. I'm getting (I think) some of this, but I'm not real schooled on the subject of detailing to this degree. Short of going on Autopia and asking randomly, would anyone recommend a detailer that could do this work in LA? I got a detailers name from Sal Zaino, and seemed very knowledgable, but like you said, if these Autopia people really know their stuff, I'd like to set something up with them. I appreciate a good day of washing/waxing and detailing my car, but I think I first need to get the car to the paint where I can do that - and a detailer at the dealers expense is first in order. After that I'll take on detailing responsibility on my own. Right now I just need a good detailer, and the dealer to agree to pay for it. Thanks again...

I'd trust autopia's advice on a local detailer more than I would from this forum . . . Dave

I understand. I called Sal Zaino once again and he recommended a guy out here who works out of the valley. He does celeb cars and he guaranteed he can get the swirls/damage out, no problem. Now the question is how to get $400 from the dealer, tomorrow when I pick up the car, to cover the detailer. He's mobile and won't bill. So I need the $ upfront from the dealership, or my car stays at the dealership till Thursday when the detailer scheduled me in (not the preferred option). I'm not willing to sign anything like a disclosure saying we're done (dealer and I), but I'm certainly open to options. I just want my car fixed right by a professional.

Well if the dealer pays for the detailer then you and the dealer should be done since you are choosing the route you'd go. I dunno about going to a zaino recommended shop though . . . Zaino uses a lot of fillers (will hide scratches but won't get rid of em). I'd be sure to check and see what the shop would use on the vehicle before taking it there. Dave

hey guys, i've been following this thread just today acutally, and i agree that Rusnak of Pasadena is not the greatest dealership. I just picked up my a3 last sunday and before i even pulled it out of the showroom, one of the fleet managers who sold me the car, broke the sunshade clip for the open sky system. I know that this is nothing like tarik's situation, but i really hope you get the best of them. by the way, i'm checking out my car once this overcast/cloudiness/rain goes away. Damn Rusnak, at least he gave it to me for invoice.

Wow, that's a great way to start your relationship with Rusnak. Truth be told, they have taken every shortcut imaginable and I just can't wait to fill out the review sheet on these guys. That said, I confirmed with the general sales manager that I just want my car back and $ to cover an independent detailer. He agreed to $300. That's funny. The detailer I spoke with said he could do it for $250-275, so I'm happy...but not quite since yesterday I noticed new damage they caused. Yes, can you believe you're even reading this - MORE damage! This time in the form of an inverted tinny dent on the hood (like someone left a wrench on the engine and closed the hood). And I noticed two pen-head sized chips on my left A-pillar. I'm going up there tomorrow and getting my car back. These people are simply dangerous. Oh, and thank you for the advice on Autopia-it has gotten me soe very valuable info and has put me in touch with a very knowledgable group of people. One of them being what they all seem to think is the best detailer in LA -Superior Shine Detailing. We'll see how things pan out tomorrow. Only think is I need them to either fix the dent, or caugh up some more $ to get Dent Wizard to pay me a visit. No way I'm paying a dime out of pocket to put this car right. The saga continues....

Stop playing nice and have a lawyer send them a "request" on stationary with a law firm's name on it. I hear this kind of story all the time. When they beleive its going to cost them an arm and a leg, they'll pay up--threaten them with a fraud charge and damages and they'll start to behave.

I"m going to say stop everything right now, forget speaking with the dealer any futher. Go directly to Audi again and get a lawyer. As I mentioned in a few threads I took a job with Audi part time for the winter. Audi is going to great lengths to perfect new car deliveries to the point that they are doing monthly drawings for PDI teams, which includes the detailers, techs and sales person. If a car gets signed off and says its perfect and the customer has no complaints it goes into a drawing and the team gets 1000 bucks to split up. This is how much they care about getting this right.. Lets just say they are going after lexus for first place in initial quality (audi is currently 5th I think). We had someone come in last friday from Audi and give a presentation. Basically you can't even submit a claim for this contest if you anything but what Audi supplies for detailing products and if there is any kind of mechanical buffer whithin 10 feet of the car. The people you have spoken with on the phone probably are just going with what the dealer tells them that its not bad. Stop no short of getting a rep out there, not the usual service FOM, but one connected with sales. They want nothing like this out there right now and because of this you will have tons of pull, you just need to get the right people helping you. Make them send someone from Audi out to look at the car.

This can be a problem I agree and will be the dealers standpoint and will give them a good case. However if you can prove the car was delivered in indoors, at night or when itw as overcast where it may not show up you will possibly have some sort of a case. But yes I meant to say this earlier. you accept the car at delivery as is and sign for it. And the dealer will stand by this.

You guys are awesome. Seriously. Now, this is what ended up happening. I went up there armed with destruction in mind, but when I arrived, I saw an absolutely perfect/flawless A3. So, what happened? They detailed the crap out of it and made it "perfect". The gsm stuck to his $300 guns and having looked over the car in the light, in the shade, unde a fluorescet light, we didn't have much ground to stand on besides accept the $ and drive the car home. Audi of America said the only way they would ever step in and assess a possible "return" would be to have an Audi rep come out and see the car. What hurts now is knowing that they can make a vehicle this flawless when they need to (it was threatened and scheduled that an Audi rep would meet us there today, but he never showed). So, HAD HE SEEN the car in it's former state, sure he would have had a problem with Rusnak, but in the condition it was in today, there would be no way on earth that they'd even look at me seriously. That said, yes, I bought a car and signed a contract, like everyone does, and as long as they own a dealership and I'm on my own (because Audi of America made it perfectly obvious they're through with me), I'm at the dealerships mercy. I have scheduled to have a professional LA detailer come out on Thursday and make this car perfect (though in it's current condition you'd never know there was a problem with it - hmmm, just like the day I bought the car). But I suspect as soon as the car gets a wash-down it'll show it's true colors. I'm through fighting for now. If the detailer can make my car as beautiful, and permanently beautiful, as he's claiming, that's all I ever wanted in the first place... So, thank you thank you thank you! You have been the BEST resource for opinions, advice and information on this hard and trying situation. I will take photos of the car on Thursday and post those up.
