Volkswagen tuners in North America have it rough. Not only are they forced to put up with VW’s notoriously long product cycle, they also have to wait an extra year or so after a new model is launched in Europe before it arrives on our shores. A perfect example is the fifth-generation GTI, which debuted last fall in Europe (a full seven years after the Mk IV GTI came to market), but won’t be available here until early next spring. Not content to simply wait it out, veteran VW tuning house AutoTech has taken bold measures to ensure that when the first US-spec GTIs roll onto dealers’ lots next year, they’ll have a full catalog of modifications waiting... Very sweet, the wheels help but it still looks eastern rather than euro.Do we know what the net effect of all the weight-saving and power-adding are on 0-60/quarter times? not much in the way of instrumented testing probly...any guesses?

Props to Autotech. I will be in more of a wait and see mode with regards to this GTI. I was one of the first few to buy a MKIV Golf, even snagged one that was made in Germany. I wish I should have waited though as the 25th AE GTI and R32 came out within five years. I'll have to make do with the SI and the Reno for now. Those two should keep me occupied until the R36 or the latest Suby/Mitsu offerings come out in two years.

Looks good. Really good actually. But definitely not a bad idea to let the dust settle generally on new model introductions, and wait for the more refined and de-bugged versions. The mk4 only got better. The vr6 went from 12v to 24v. The 1.8t went from 150hp to 180hp. Etc.

Isn't the MQ350 6-speed only rated for 350 N-m? 305 lb-ft of torque is way above that spec (~413 N-m). Isn't that a bit dangerous for your transmission?

Nice stats but I still cannot get used to the look of these. Even lowered and without the Hot Wheels wheels, this thing still doesn't look right.

Not my expectations in terms of styling. It's almost 2006. The boy-racer look is a thing of the past. Specifically, I am talking about the sideskirts and the front grille cover. And even the front bumper to a limited degree. How could they still use a grille with that little notch on top to fill in the area where the badge was? IMO it was always a lame solution because it is basically telling everyone, "Look I'm a cheap mod, I couldn't figure out a better way to enhance the grille". Those sideskirts were nice in the 90's and earlier 2000's but they're old too and look very boy-racer in that picture. C'mon, these are all mods that we've already seen on a million MKIV GTI's. Minus the wheels(because those ones are timeless), most of the aftermarket body style mods are just played out and old now, especially for a car that still is not even out in the States yet.

Agreed. Styling does not impress me. The grill really made me sick, but I'd rather see a texer out do this anyhow... -FBL

this must be the first one you've seen then... i think the car has some sweet mods but the look has been bastardized... even the big companies could use some help in that department...

I like the styling. 305lb-ft of torque is a bit much for a FWD car, however. I think I'll wait for the R36 and use what I like from this one. I'd like to see the Kamei grille developed for this Mk. That was my favorite mod from the previous gen..

performance = front bumper = Wheels = Grille = the Mk5 promises to be a great performer, but this is not the style I would be looking to go with one. that grill makes it look even LESS like a VW... and best MK5? ... i quickly found a few much better looking set-ups:
