 VWvortex: A Daytrip to Autostadt« »

I awoke at 8:00 am on Tuesday, July 24th, 2005 to the sound of my cell phone alarm. I quickly jumped out of bed, as the day when I get to drive the autobahn and see the Volkswagen headquarters had finally arrived!

“Hannah! Get up! We’re going to Wolfsburg!” I said with extreme Volkswagen-dork enthusiasm. She retorted with a subtle, slightly muffled, “Ugghhhh….”

After a morning shower and some overpriced scones and juice at the hotel restaurant, we got down to the parking garage by 9:30 am. The night before, the concierge printed out driving directions for me, albeit in German. “No worries, it’s very easy. Take A5 to A7 to A39.” The directions indicated a distance of 233 miles from Frankfurt to Wolfsburg, and a driving time of 3 hours and 47 minutes...Full Story

Yep! The cars are stored there for customers who take delivery of their new cars at Autostadt. Pretty cool.

Doesn't look like it. The Golf won't arrive here until next year, and VW has no plans for diesel engines in this market after 2006. Closest you can get is a 2006 Jetta TDI.

No diesel for the Golf V in the US, or no diesels in ANY new VW for the US? I thought 2006 was the year US diesel would finally get it's act together and be clean enough for the really cool VW diesel motors. Guess I'll have to get a GTi and stop dreaming of a Golf V GT TDi 4Motion...

Probkem is the government keeps moving the bar. Once low-sulphur diesel becomes available here, it will be interesting to see how the market changes.

When were you there? I was there Oct 24th, in fact haven't even gotten the photo's off the camera yet.

The special edition Golf in the VW building rocked! I snapped some great shots of it.

Did you hit the private VW musuem? It was way better then Autostadt. And I lucked out with a private ride over there, plus it was only me, a father and son and the cleaning lady when I was at the private musuem.

I've been to the Autostadt 3 times in the past years, and I love how the exhibits are always changing. In the winter time there is also family fun, like ice skating on one of the many ponds inside the Autostadt, and a cool sledding run behind the museum.
Some of the exhibits are... different, and kind of artsy-fartsy, but there is plenty of technological information to keep the most ardent gearhead occupied.
The easiest and cheapest way to get there is taking the ICE train to the Wolfsburg station, and walking 5 minutes across the bridge to the main building. ICE train ride (Inter City Express) from Berlin is just over an hour, and a little less from Hannover.
I'll try to post some of my wintertime pictures.
What special edition Golf V did they have in the VW pavilion? I've seen that red 12 cylinder VW race car in there, and last December they had a Golf Plus.

I would have loved to have made a trip around Germany like you did, but we left the next morning after AutoStadt to get back home.

I was going to take the ICE, but I wanted to drive on the Autobahn. Also, the tickets were 66 Euro's each, so it was almost the same price to drive - and that's much more fun!

Yeah, I know. I had just gotten back form Greece on July 11th, and then left for Germany on July 20th (totally unplanned or I would have just stayed in Greece!).

I had just sent my Nikon D70 in for a general maintenance, so I had to take pictures with my 5 year old Nikon 885. They turned out surprisingly well!

Uhm, there is no law preventing lower sulfur diesel from being available now. And I checked EPA.gov -- it's targeted for 07 which I thought was the plan all along.

ULSD - Fuels Map, Voluntary Diesel Retrofit Program, EPA

Clean Diesel Fuel Implementation Workshop - National Clean Diesel Campaign - OTAQ - EPA

Regulatory Announcement: DFR and NPRM: Revisions to Motor Vehicle Diesel Fuel Sulfur Transition Provisions and Technical Amendments to the Highway Diesel, Nonroad Diesel, and Tier 2 Gasoline Programs - OTAQ - EPA

EPA NE: Diesel Exhaust in New England - Retrofits & Cleaner Fuels

Etc. The rule hasn't gone anywhere! (And it's important to me given I hold a B.S. in environmental science).

That is a good article, with a good storyline of excitement, disappointment, the problems with traveling in a foreign land, time crunch. Kudos to Anthony.
