Just go to an autozone or pepboys and get 3M Double sided Molding tape. It's red and dark grey colored. Make sure you cut it into little strips.

thats the best way. just make sure both contact points r cleaned with acetone or something. the problem with adhesive is when they fall off, and they will fall off, that adhesive is a batch to clean off for a new contact! adhesive suckss!! thats why they call it molding tape!

woah, brave! Watch out, some epoxies can eat straight through your paint!

i just use the molding tape and use heat and a little adhesive remover to clean it up. I've only had to do it twice over 8 years so it's not that bad, but it is 2 times too many I suppose.

I hear of this stuff 3M VHB (very high bond) double-sided tape. Going to look for it soon. That 3M regular double-sided tape didn't work well for me. It came back off weeks later. I didn't cut them into little strips, but whatever.

I agree about using the epoxy or glue. Don't do it!!!!! The 3M VHB does an excellent job.....IF the surface is properly prepped before you use it. The reason why the original 3M stuff came off early on our 96-99 cars was because the factory did NOT properly prep the two surfaces. Both the painted door and the rubber trim should be free of debris and other adhesive remains wipe the rubber and door with alcohol let dry and then scuff with a medium grade sand paper. Then wipe again with iso alcohol. Appy. Success!

 Re: SIDE MODLING adhesive!!!!!Help (AaronD) »« »

I went in to the local auto shop (Lordco) and the tape was $40 a roll I decided to head up to see if my friend at a body shop would sell me a length so that I could do it myself. He ended up doing the work for free and he didn't charge me which was a surprise.

They used the 3M grey double sided tape protected by red plastic as everyone has mentioned here. Right after cutting the old double sided tape off the piece of moulding with a razor knife (note he did not remove all the tape completely which suprised me but just cut as much off as he could with the razor which was white btw), they prepped it with a solvent that was made specifically for this purpose. He said that without this, it wouldn't bond properly and fall off prematurely. It could have been just alcohol but it was a tin with a screw on cap that had a cotton ball type of applicator. He rubbed it on and let it dry then applied a full length of tape to the top and bottom part of the moulding.

He then went out to the car and just rolled the old stuck on adhesive with his thumb. It came off very easily. After finishing that he just re-applied the moulding starting at the front and working his way back. Well that's my experience. Hope it helps.

Doug

I found that grey 3M tape at Home Depot. I stuck it on my car a few years ago and it is still holding. Really good stuff.

you can find rolls of the 3m that are like 100 feet at body shop supply houses. its alot cheaper than buying like 10 of the smaller rolls. also, before you put the moldings on, i suggest heat then up a bit ON THE BACK SIDE and let them sit somewhere completely flat. ovr time they warp and stuff. the flatter they are the better and longer they will stay. i gotta take off my drivers side one of these days it has a little bend in it that doesnt stay stuck down.

Any suggestions on getting rid of some extra glue left by the PO...I think they did use Gorilla glue . A bit of it has always shown and it's really frustrating.

i dunno about that gorilla glue is the dogs balls as far as adhesion. i would try a plastic putty scraper to get as much of it off as possible...but be careful obviously as it will scratch your paint. after that, i think maybe some lacquer thinner would get the remainder off.

CAUTION ! lacqer thinner is bad for paint. dont use it unless you wont be able to see the spot that needs it as it WILL dull your paint. i would suggest using painters tape around the area in case of drips, etc. and make sure to wipe and clean it off good. it will work the easiest and best, but just be friggin careful with it. put a LITTLE on a rag and do tiny spots at a time.

Thanks for the suggestion. Goo-off or similar hasn't really done the trick. I'll try using the laquer thinner when I get a chance, clean it off well and wash wax it right afterwards.

No never... my Step-Dad... er whatever... used this... ran down the side of his GrandMarqis... worst idea ever... Stuff looks like snot, and I am going to have to grind it off and repaint part of his car..

3M VHB tape (Gray w/ red).

(ps, I know you are J/K...)

Edit, Ive done this now on both of my MKIIIs.. one black, the other white.

0 - Take you time, this is not a 15 min, job...

1 - wash car. I kid you not.

2 - Peel off offending trim. Use a heatgun, don't blister paint, or do it in the sun on a warm day.

3 - Wash car again. Wash trim off.

4 - Clay bar vehicle @ trim spot. I used Goof-Off on a small rag... Don't go nuts. Sit down and do some work.

4 - Wash it, dry it. Wipe it down with 91% iso. alch. Let it dry.

5 - Working on a flat clean surface remove the old tape from the trim. I used - yes a razor blade to carefully peel off some of it, I then used Goof-Off, my thumb, and some blisters to get the surface near perfect.

6 - Wash trim/Dry w/air

7 - Wipe off with alch.

8 - Lay 2 stips of 3M VHB tape down on trim.

9 - Line up trim with dip on sidebelt line. Move trim "onto" door starting from the bottom up. Take your time.

10 - Rub trim into place.

11 - It should last another 10 years.

you can also heat up the molding once you put it on with double end tape... this will make it stick a little better

the type of adhesive used isnt as important as how well you clean the area before resetting the molding. carefully use some acetone to get the last little bit of leftoever adhesive off. make SURE you do 1 hell of a cleaning job and when you reglue that stuff shouldnt come off again. cleaning is the important step in redoing sidemoldings.

I used GOOP it's specifically for this and other weather stripping, it's water proof and doesn't require much, it also is cheap, like $6 a tube. Water proof and dries clear.
I've haven't touched my moulding since it's been at least 3 years and I didn't even get all the old adhesive off, I'm sure if you take your time and clean everything up nice it will be the last time you have to do it.

I used it, my trim is still sticking, and nothing has become damaged. As long as you read the directions on the bottle and apply SPARINGLY (very sparingly, as it expands a lot when it drys), you should have no problems with it.
