The fact that a loaded SI is about $7000 less than a loaded GTI seals the deal, tightly.

Wow... I haven't done any research, so $7k strikes me as a huge price diff...
not to mention the additional costs for installing coilovers on the GTI.

I'm willing to bet that this one still has the spacers in the suspension for shipping. The ones that I have seen on dealer lots ready for driving are not that bad.

The GTI has better seats

The SI has a LSD

The GTI has DSG as an option

The GTI can be chipped for 250hp and 300# tq

The K20 also does well with a hondata reflash ~20hp

It comes down to taste. The SI is cheaper, less practical, a little more raw edge performance. The GTI is $3-5k more, is much nicer inside and with all the torque is much easier to drive quick. I'd cream over a SI hatch.

by the time you chip your gti so it blows the doors off the si, and get your coilovers to fix the stance and make it handle you could've bought an evo

Or you could just get a GIAC chip for about $500 and blow the doors off the Honda!

Having been in both and driving neither I would still say SI. But in reality I wouldn't buy either. My sedan is fast enough, handles great enough, rides smooth enough, and carries enough.

Why does one have to be better than the other? Can't they both just be great cars?

Then again I drink Coke and Pepsi...

If you're lookingjsut for a fun fwd car...you can compare both. For me, I'm looking for a hatch..preferredly 4 doors....there is no comparison cuz the GTI is the only option...especially if you want a DSG.

How hard would it be to get the European suspension. It is just springs and shocks or are there a whole bunch of things to worry about?

That and some BBS CH rims and it would be amazing in my mind.

Am I the only one who really doesn't notice the "ginormous increase in ride height" on the GTI. Yes, it certainly looks "higher up" than the Euro version, but not nearly enough to turn me off.

x2

Too many people are making it out to have a Touareg's ride height, IMO.

As for which one I'd buy...I can see myself in a black GTI with the 18" wheels and DSG.

tough call for me, as i find my tastes are changing. best looking gti yet, imo, and the worst looking civic. If money was of little consideration, i'd have to pick the gti this time around, but if i were paying the bills with my hard earned cash, i'd opt for the civic. ..But i'd go for a slightly used '05 rsx-s before the civic (or the gti). Just a much nicer looking car overall (plus the hatch, gotta have that hatch for pity sakes).

Not calling you out, I just don't get this claim. 50hp and 100tq from a chip. I never saw actual gains that APR claimed from their MKIV gains. 35hp/50tq or so. I mean it really seemed to translate to about 20/30 at most in dynos I've seen. So is the technology and engine that much better on MKV to see such higher gains?

Bro, your doubt is understandable...but they already dynoed the gains...and it is about 250hp and 300lb-ft. First off, the 2.0T has a bigger displacement...2nd, it has higher compression with direct injection. Third, I believe the chip raises the boost (both mk4 and mk5)...why why can't it get 250hp?

Btw...the torque...200lb-ft stock...300lb-ft chipped. I believe they come up to that peak at around 1800-2000rpm...almost like a diesel.

For me it's go to be the Si.

Even if you buy a GTI and a chip, you will be spending thousands more than the Si (Si w/ navi, btw). Those thousands can then by translated to FI for the Honda, and it will kill the GTI.

If I were to get a gti, I would stay far away from 18" wheels. I have them on my R32 and I am definately ready for 17".

As noted in C&D review, the GTI has been bumped up in height to meet NHS Requirements, noticeable wheel gap.

Could someone please explain NHS's reasoning behind that ?
I hope it's not because of the high sitting bumpers on SUVs.

Everyone cries about the ride height, but these cars are brand new and not broken in (suspention wise) so I would immagine the ride will sink a little bit after its broken in, also who says the shipping spacers weren't taken out yet?

I've seen some MKV GTI's with Good, Bad, and OK ride heights. It is all the angle of the photo. GO LOOK AT ONE IN PERSON.. it isn't any worse than my 05 MKIV GTI

If you want that low look, either get the 18's or buy an aftermarket suspention. STOP CRYING

Somehow, this question sounds like an attack on the GTI(purposely).

Those new dimensions have added 95 pounds to the Si's curb weight, and have swiped almost 3 inches of rear legroom. Unless you hang with supermodels and NBA stars, the car's backseat remains usable. And let's face it, if you're driving a Civic, even an Si, you ain't hangin' with Tyra and Shaq.

Honda says it can seat five. Good luck with that.

Si:
Curb weight, lbs.: 2,877

GTI:
Curb weight: 3178 lb

Both are curb weights doesn't include options, I think.

How is it an attack, he's just trying to put the hp numbers in perspective, something you can't do untill you know the weight.

The Si really doesn't have any options other than nav. The GTI's weight can be expected to grow when the sunroof is added.

Can someone back up these thft claims with facts? The Integra/RSX went from bieng the most stolen car ever to bieng lower than a 1.8T GTI on the latest lists I've seen. Immobilizers and standard security alarms make a pretty big difference as do power locks, I'm pretty sure the new Si will see the same transformation in theft rates that the Integra/RSX saw.

Exactly, HP means nothing to me without knowing how much the car weighs..
Also, something most people do not think about when hearing how much power a car has.
