2006 Mark V GTI- manual transmission

 reset service indicator« »

I've searched and searched, but to no avail. Questions:

1. Is there any way of resetting the service reminder on Mark V without the dealer tool/Vag-Com?

2. I did find this procedure for a 2000 Vanagon in my searching. Does anyone know if this (or something similar) will work for the GTI?

thx...

The Service Reminder Indicator (SRI) is fitted to all 2000 EuroVans It stores two sets of information: Oil Change and Inspection Service. Here is the method to manually reset the SRI after performing a service:

Switch ignition OFF.
Press and hold down the trip odometer reset button (at the lower right of the instrument cluster).
Switch ignition ON and release the trip odometer reset button. It is not necessary to start the engine; merely turn the key until the ignition is ON.
The trip mileage area now displays "Service OIL".
If trip odometer reset button is now pressed again, the display turns to "Service INSP". Pressing the button again will cycle the display back to "Service OIL".
When the reminder that needs to be reset (either OIL or INSP) is displayed, turn button for setting the clock (at lower left of instrument cluster) to the right. The display changes to "Service ----". That reminder is now reset.
The second reminder is unaffected unless it is displayed by pressing trip odometer reset button and the clock button is turned right again.
Switch ignition OFF and back ON to resume normal display.

 Re: (heffergm) »« »

...and here's something similar I found for the Mark IV...

If your Mk4 is the one with Blue dash lights and Red writing it goes like this!

* Turn on ignition.
* Hold down Right trip button and continue to do so whilst turning off ignition.
* Still with Right trip button held down turn ignition back on.
* Release Right trip button.
* With ignition still on turn Left trip button to the Right and release.
* Turn off ignition.

Service reminder should now be reset when you next start the vehicle!

Service indicator can be reset without a VAG COM.
Here's how:
1. Keys out of ignition- press and hold in trip odometer reset button "0.0" on right hand side of display
2. Still holding this button down, insert key into ignition and put to the on position without starting the car.
3. Display will read "service now"

4. let go of the "0.0" button and depress the "m" button on the left hand side of the display. this will re-set the service reminder. There is no confirmation on the display other than the words "service now" will disappear.

You can confirm that the service reminder has been reset, or check how many miles/days remain until service at any time by taking key out of the ignition and holding in the trip reset "0.0" button for between 3 and 5 seconds. The MFD will display miles and hours until next service.

Thanks for the info. No problem resetting the service indicator, but the holding in the trip reset button to check for remaining miles/time to next service doesn't seem to work. ('06 GTI, manual trans) Also, does the ECU know that the next service should be in 10k rather than 5k miles?

thx...

Just tried checking the Time To Service on my GTi. You need to have the key on, engine off, and press trip reset for a few seconds.

Thanks!

I tried to get this info on another site. Good stuff!!

Oh yeah, I think this should be a sticky, as more people are gonna ask as they put more miles on their cars.

This is awsome.

Thanks for the photos and the step-by step. I agree this should be a sticky...since I was wondering about this...as I click over the 4000 Km mark on my GTI.

Is there any way to adjust the interval or even turn it off?

This can also be reset using the VAG-COM.... when reset using the above method, the service indicator gets set to fixed intervals. See here: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2498327

Mine came on at 500 miles (for some odd reason).

I've only had the car for a short while, and there's no way it needed a oil change. The "Manufactured On" date on the side of the car says 08.05 so I'm figuring it was just the 12 month time limit clicking on..randomly. I was just in the shop to fix the radio, i doubt the two incidents are connected.

the "service now" thing is completely separate from the "check engine" light and other real notifications right? Thats what i'm figuring, hence why i just reset it.

 Re: reset service indicator (dangrass11) »« »

I followed these instructions. However, I don't think it worked. The reason that I think it didn't work is the following. Before my oil change yesterday, for a few seconds, I would see a small number in the place of my odometer. IOW, it would read 100 for a few seconds, then switch to 4900. After I went through the above steps, I no longer see the small number. I ONLY see the 4940 (my actual mileage).

Have I done this correctly, or do I have to find someone with a VAG-CON or go to the dealer to get it reset correctly?

Thank you in advance for your help.

The above reset function is in the manual/handbook. From the section in the manual it says "The next service will be displayed after (15000km/10000miles), or after one year, if you reset the service display yourself. The service interval will not be determined individually.

I think the number displayed for a few seconds could be the miles to next service (as calculated by the vehicle from driving conditions) and as you reset this is no longer being calculated. This is just a guess on my part.

That is correct. once you get within 1000 miles of your sevice due it spits up a reminder every time you start the car. Since it's been reset, the reminder shouldn't re-appear until (maybe) 1000 miles before your NEXT service is due.
