D00d like I am a nasacar welder guy. I know my welds work,,..
Here's a video.. http://faculty.ccp.edu/faculty...2.MPG That's my big fat ass riding on my welds... well, at least the motor mounts... and some under carage work... Naa, I know my welds suck. Its hard with a home-depoish 120V welder that does not use gas. I hit them hard with a hammer (personal test) to make sure they won't break. That and use good eye protection are about all I really know about welding.. Drove the car in to work today, shifted fine R & 5th work as VW wanted them to. There are no adjustments needed.. really, there is nothing to adjust, this was some of the best 20 min I spent working on my car. More or less, I did the same thing MizzingLinkZ did.
I was going to make a plate like they sell for $15, but I wanted to make my own rig.. Frankly, IMHO the MissingLinkZ $15 deal is the way to go. The ABT kit, Neuspeed - Not worth the money. I had the Neuspeed setup on my MKII Golf - this feels the same.... Well, it feels better since it was cheaper and I made it... Hillbilly - Just the name that came into my head while I was listining to these loosers. http://www.scots.com/

actually its not necessary, as the piece dan modified can only go on 2 ways. right or 180 degrees incorrect. or upside down i suppose. The square cut in the end of the lever he modified fits onto a square headed rod, the one with the plastic ball on it. As long as you have the modified piece back down seated around the square of the rod you are fine.

simply put, it shortens the throw by lengthening the shift linkage. This isn't rocket science.Say you want to clean your windsheild at the gas station with a squeegee. You can reach further across the window with a longer handle than a shorter one. Less movement to do the same action.

Oh THIS thread! I missed it!!! <duh!> I wanted to bump this because I just adjusted the other end of the shifter this weekend (the part that bolts to the trans) much like this pic here.. that yeayeayea did. And mine - I just heated it up with a MAP torch (Home Depot) and then hammered it into that shape... (on the left)... Drilled a hole, swapped the bushing, and BINGO... this feels as good, if not better then my Neuspeed one I had in my MKII.. Best of all, it cost me nothing but 10 min to hammer it into shape.

I am sorry to revive the dead thread but ive been thinking about cutting the shifter and making the link longer. The thing that kept me from doing it was the fact that if i messed something up, i wouldnt have a car for a few days and i would prolly die. My question is, what is the worst thing that can happen? All the stuff looks simple to do but is there something i should consider before doing it? What if i cut too much? Also, once i cut the shifter and lengthen the link, is it ready to go right away? Both yeayeayea and Dan said there are no adjustments but just wanna make sure. Thanks for any info This is my first post, i just registered but i have been reading tons of threads and DIYs for a few months and finally decided to register

I'm curious how the 2 different methods differ in shift throw. I've used the flat bar extension before but I'm not familiar with modifying the piece with the ball on it. Can they be used together or are the affects additive resulting in too much reduction? Is it better to do one or the other?

Thats the back seat heater for my Vanagon. It leaks. So, I pulled it out. I don't run the camper much at all in the winter. Oh *that* heater.. I found it in the trash, it works great. It was off at the time. I keep it only a few inches away from a box of oily rags.

The piece i modified is modeled after the autotech shift kit. by lengthing dans part, and essentially shortening my part, you should have a really nice, short throw, depending on how much longer you make dans part. Ive been running my setup for over 20000 miles now, its not a huge difference over stock but im certainly happy with it.
