DIY [Wheel Polish] | « » 2:10 PM 3-10-2006 | |
|
Ok, so i decided to tackle the task of wheel polishing, and boy was it a task. If you decide you want to do this, make sure that you are one dedicated person, because this is not a walk in the park if you dont have proper tools.TOOLS I USED -Billet Aluminum Poslish -Paint Stripper -Drill Gun with metal brush wire -100-2000 gritt sand paper -BEER -Lots of nerves Tools
Step 1: Apply paint stripper, it will make your life easier. Once you apply it, leave it between 5-10 minutes to eat up the paint, and then use a hard flat surface, to scrape it off. This is what it looks like after you strip it off, notice the paint is still there. use the drill gun with metal wire and brush it off.
With a little help of a 100 gritt paper, you will be able to see the wheel surface
The hardes part is to sand down the paint in the corners, so use 100 gritt paper and get ready to sand down you finger prints Move to 320 gritt paper, and continue sanding
Move up to 600 gritt paper, and continue sanding
Be sure to take your tame and not leave the scratches on the wheels, if you do they will be noticed, you will have to go back down a gritt and sand over again till its removed
I decided to stop with 1000 gritt paper, which may have been a bad idea, so i would recommend going up to 2000 gritt paper. after youre done wash off the residue off from the wheel and the tire. the tire will not be washed off from the first try
apply tire foam, to clean the tire a little better
After youre done washing the wheel, apply the billet aluminum polish. Rub it till the area beings to turn black, your white cloth will turn black as well. use the clean side to whipe it off, and after youre done, apply polish once again, as many times as you want till its shiny to your liking.
The shine and finish will vary depending on how patient you were. Like i said, i suggest you go all the way to 2000 gritt paper, and make sure you dont leave any scratches on the wheel. This is the overall appearance of the wheel. now its time for me to drop my car.
You are done, and now you can get that long deserved beer, and admire your work Side note: I mentioned i only went up to 1000 gritt paper, and i got the finish in the picture above. Now i decided to go up to 2000, and instead of hand polishing i used a buffer, and this is the final result.

right idea... bad execution. you need to sand up to at least 1500 grit. Then, when you apply your polish, you need to use a machine (polisher, or drill with attachment) You simply cannot apply metal polish by hand and get a really good result. To fix you wheels. Go back with 1500 paper (and maybe even follow up with 2000). Dont shortcut the sanding.... its takes alot of time, but doing it right is worth it. Then apply your metal polish with a high speed machine (a drill attacment will be fine).

thanks for the replies, yea im aware about going to 2000 gritt paper, i was just lazy to do it, but i will go back and finish it off, and i have the polishing machine, so im gonna use that to apply the billet polish and have a more mirror like finish, but its not hard to get thereElvir

im not sure about the center cap, i might leave it as is, but im gonna go back and redo the wheel and bring out the real shine in it, and after that, i might paint the center cap crome, to make it match better.Elvir

Just FYI... If you sand linearly (not swirly, but back and forth) one direction with say... 1500 grit, and then move to 2000 grit and sand linear again, but against the grain of the last grit, you'll have much better results, and no radial swirl marks. Example: 1500 grit sand left to right only, 2000 grit sand top to bottom onlyThen again, all this will be remedied with a power polisher and some jewlers rouge. Mirror finish that isht!
