So my conclusion is that A) People know the name Miata, but not the car itself and B) the hard top throws people off.

You need to consider that the car does effect what people think of you, but it will not /change/ what they think of you. If they thought you were effeminate before, and /then/ see you in a Miata- they will make a comment about the Miata being a chick/gay car. But me? I never heard that even once during the 2 years I owned one. As am matter of fact, most people were very complimentary of my Miata.

That's odd. The biggest pussees I know drive Hummers because they feel the need to make up for being such a lame pussee of a man with their whip.

(add- we are all different. Gay, straight, by- be what you are. Don't take my post as a bash against those that arent hetero. The problem is with people trying to use their whip as a calling card of their sexuality. And that is total bs)

On that note- I do consider any automatic Miata to be a chick car. But step back, and what manual cars are chic cars? Would you consider a manual turbo Beetle a chick car next to an auto tranny anything?

also, the manual vs. auto arguement is the LAMEST thing ever. i dont care what my car is, i would like a manual yes, but after looking at the wrx Impreza (27k mind you) and realising how SMALL that thing is compared to my 16k car.. i realised, i can live with an auto...

so go drive your chick car... the miata IS a chick car, it doesnt matter what you think when you drive one... it IS. go look and ask ANYONE ANYWHERE if they feel that the Miata is a chick car 50+% will say yes.

You were pipe-dreaming about a Solstice not too long ago. I don't think either are "chick cars," but what would make the Miata be one if the Solstice isn't? Roadsters, rwd, 170+hp, curvy bodies,...

As for a hard-top on the NC, it's a factory option on Canadian MX-5s, but I haven't actually seen a picture of one.

I was serious about the Hummer comment. People that are comfortable with their sexuality drive what they want to drive without concern about how it will be 'perceived'.

And large SUVs are the EPITOME of soccer mom transport. By your opinion- Does that mean a Miata is a single chick, and a Hummer is a chick with kids? Which is a better image?

And I am not trying to insult or start a flame war here. So don't take my posts as such. I actually know that the H2 has some advantages when used off road. But.... if an H2 is used 100% on road ( or at least on roads that are easily passable with cars), does that make them any less of a vehicle? IOW- what are you using as your quantifier to claim the Miata is the EPITOME of a chick car?

My Mom was telling a co-worker of hers about my Dad's new race car (Spec Miata), and the guy said something along the lines of "Only gay people drive those". I think my Mom got pretty close to hitting him in the face. Not that she is against homosexuality (if anything, she's for it ) but because the guy was such an idiot.

I think a more accurate statement is that so many people have no idea what they are AND they've never ridden in one to see what all the fuss is about. So many people I've given rides to are really excited "this is a fun car!"
