Its an ambient temp sensor, but not for the MFA. IIRC it adjusts either the air/fuel mixture or the fans, i asked a while back, but i forgot what the guy told me

It's a time/space distortion sensor. If you reverse the polarity you can actually travel backward in time.

it is the Ambient temp sensor. the ECU uses it to make corrections. it is NOT for the MFA.

Well... I do think its part of the cooling fan ckt...Manual says "near horn" some two wire switch... Unless they mean down on the A/C dryer unit.. jhayes - I am 99% sure its *not* an ECU input... that sensor (intake air temp) is on the side of the intake...

your talking about the one on the half shaft and not the one that bolts to the subframe? but onto dan's problem.you could pull the part number off it and see what ETKA says it is, likely it will say "ambient temp sensor" but it might be worth it...

WE HAVE A WINNER. Good Afternoon, Dan,
The component in the picture is F38, ambient temperature switch. Reference wiring diagram 33/3, current track 40. I suppose you'll want to know what it does and why....? If you study the wiring diagram, you'll see that F38 is in series with several components that can switch off the A/C compressor. OK, that explains what it does; now why does it do it? When the temperature under the hood gets down to whatever value is stamped on the body, F38 opens and keeps the A/C compressor off. This is because the compressor manufacturer (Sanyo?) feels that cold compressor oil does not provide adequate lubrication. After a while, the compressor picks up some engine heat, and so does F38, and the compressor can come back on. You just might ask, "what is the point of running the A/C on a cold day?" Don't forget that passing air over the A/C evaporator dehumidifies it as well. Hot, dry air makes the defroster work GREAT! And when the cabin is full of wet boots etc., it makes the interior much more comfortable. I just ran outside and checked F38 on my wife's '98 Jetta TDI and the temperature is not marked on it. Running the part number (1H0 959 625) through the parts system yields a switch-on/switch-off temperature range of 10-1.7°C (50-35°F). In summary: F38 keeps the A/C compressor off when cold to protect it. So there you have it; no additional charge for the lesson. Arthur LeBrun Bentley Publishers

No, sometimes there are things that stump me... I was pretty sure it was that A/C sensor. Just had no way to prove it... I can rest at night now... knowing... what the hell that little do-dad is, and I know that if the A/C ever takes a dump to jump it.

Thank you and Arthur LeBrun for the great info! Is it possible to buy a different sensor with different ranges? Kind sucks if it's to cold out and you have all that moisture from snow in your car, that you can't get some nice dry air in the cabin until the compressor gets up to its minimum range temp...
