The Captain is in the house!!!!!!!!!!!!a few more pics« »

The members of our KDF group assembled at the captain's quarters for a Sunday of most excellent tinkering
I will refresh your memory....
Remember this

And this

And..........

Well thing are moving along on the "Cool Jet" project, some very wild and exciting fabrication from our friend the captain
This is what's going on.........

Sorry for this shameless MK1 photo

The VW on the smoothed out trunk were from a caddy that gave up its tailgate for the betterment of wild VW customization

Thanks Brian, the shifter feels new
Captain...thanks for re-working my tails I had a wonderful Sunday and my wife thought I was slaving under the car

I'm pretty impressed with the fabrication, though not my style. It's great to see a very custom car come out from under a Jetta chassis. Good work to him.

Is the cooler box handle on the right fender an intake?

heh, yea, the motor - when we got the car, it had two rods hanging out of a hole in the block that I could put both fists through. So we found another digi motor and threw it in (just to be able to move the car around under it's own power), and discovered that someone had "redneck engineered" the wiring harness and fusebox. After getting all that straightened out, we discovered the lower timing belt pulley was not correctly hooking up to the crank - of course, we didn't figure this one out until we had tried everything else under the sun to get it to fire. So yea, we're kinda tired of the whole motor deal for right now, it'll stay digi until next year... when we start the supercharged 16v swap... I think the goal is to get the body finished and get it to Treffen this year, then we'll do the mill.

Front end - think '53 mercury headlight bezels with early Jaguar 3-bar blue-dot lights. Still haven't figured out the rest of the grille yet, but I'm betting Morgan's gonna come up with something weird / perfect for this beast...

The falcon taillights use two bulbs - one for running lights, and a dual-filament bulb for brake and turn. They're pretty slick when they're properly wired.

Ben, those pics came out better than I thought, especially for using a cheap camera. That's the first time in quite a while that I've used a camera for pleasure instead of work... glad to hear the shift linkage worked out, it's been a LOONNNGGGGG time since I've done a 4-speed...

yup - it's a large louver we cut out of a old generator cover out at the secret salvage yard. The place we go a-hunting has an enourmous amount of old, well, junk - which is perfect for us to gather the necessary goods for this beast. It's interesting to hang around with Morgan - he'll see some trash laying in the path back to the yard, pick it up, and exclaim "that's just what I was looking for!" You'd think he's nuts, but in a week after he's cleaned up said junk and welded it to the car, all the sudden you start thinking that he's the sane one and you yourself are the one that's nuts... when he finishes the gas tank door I'll show you a example...

glad to see the positive feedback, we know it's not the usual type of custom that this forum sees. It's just a different style than the norm, and to me that makes it cool. Although I bet y'all will hate the shift knob with a passion...

I'm glad the link to this thread was posted in the mk3 forum or else I would've never seen it. It's completely different and innovative, and I love it. Love the style, love the little fabrication touches here and there. Excellent progress.

This car is going to be SOOO sweet. I love how crazy and different it is without being crazy and different in a riced-out, Jeep Cherokee headlights, lambo doors way. It's all about keeping it classy. Any idea what color it's going to be yet (for some reason I'm thinking a Woody look would be sick)? How about the interior?

I F\/Kin' LOVE the falcon tails man! I know what they were even before I read the whole thread BTW. Very cool mod. I'm not quite sure what to think of the big emblem in back (as an old school "Volkswagen" script would have been just fine as well, but this thing is certainly impressive all around. If you are bringing this to the CVO Treffen I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT! Makes me wanna get off my ass and get going on having the rear emblem shaved on my MK3 GLX now. I need to get that done and the boser molded this month.....

Re: The Captain is in the house!!!!!!!!!!!!a few more pics (eurochris1021) »« »

thanks for the positive replies folks - we were uncertain what feedback we'd get, it really is different.

Paint is going to be two-toned blue with a satin finish - kinda like what you'd get with primer, only it's a color / satin clear coat. Truly old-school 50's hot rod. I've seen the test panels, and it's just flat out gonna knock you over when you see it.

Interior just got finished - Recaro interior recovered with the same two-tone blue satin. We're still fighting the repro carpet we bought from stockinteriors.com - it seems to be a little shallow in the rear footwell area. As soon as we get over that particular hump (this car seems to get quite a bit of enjoyment in fighting us every step of the way), we'll post some pics of that (or if I can sneak into the secret storage area I'll snap some spy pics). So, if anybody's got any hints on reforming a pre-molded one-piece carpet set, well spill the beans and we'll make sure you get a reward...

Door locks are pop machine locks - once again, old school trick. They don't press in, and I really like how Morgan's frenched them into the doors. It's just another example of how he'll tell me what his plan is and my first reaction is "man, that's just nuts" - then I see it and I have to eat my own words...

We started a new post because the old post hadn't been moved back to the MKII forum yet, and we just couldn't keep this thing to ourselves anymore...

Sounds like Alex posted about the other project from this weekend - grafting a corrado spoiler onto his MKIII jetta. That turned out pretty nicely - now all I gotta do is wire it up...

I'll ask the captain what car he got the rims from - we tend to blur the line between MKI and MKII, so there's no telling where they came from. Morgan used to be the Paint Shop Manager for the Westmoreland VW plant (he started before the plant was built, so he's got documentation for just about every process there, as well as old newspaper clippings, training brocures, you name it) plus more parts than you can shake a stick at. And if he ain't got it, he knows where it can be gotten. bigger daddy and I just got lucky he moved into our neck of the woods!

You won't be able to miss "The Captain" at Treffen - he'll be the only one sporting a white pith helmet and a hawaiian VW shirt. BTW, he won third place in the MKII Jetta class at MotorStadt III with the white 16v jetta in the pics - we rescued that car from our "super secret" salvage yard for $300. Put a new clutch and tires / rims on the car, and laughed all the way to Detroit - the car runs better than any used car I've ever owned. Then we laughed all the way home - the look on his face after his name was called for his trophy was just amazing...
