 JOM Lowering caps (Before/After)« »

Installing some JOM "lowering caps" - um yea. Its easy, but a total waste of time IMHO.

I had to replace my strut bearings anyhow... and fix a dust boot and bump stop.. so here goes..

BEFORE - H&R Cup Kit - Stock spring hat.

Old VS new

AFTER = WASTE OF TIME = No noise, but the fact is - these did nothing to lower my car.

My Engine

Screw you cardomain.

Tell me about it.

At least all and all it was like a 30 min job, and I had to adjust my camber anyhow..

That's lame!

Did you replace your strut mounts too?

Did you replace them with 2.0 or VR mounts?

If you changed them with VR mounts, then the vr ones just counteracted the drop of the lowering caps.

If you got new 2.0 ones and the old ones were worn out then maybe it raised it a little.

If neither of the above that is really super lame man.

I'll keep this in mind in the future.

Yea, I think part of my be the new strut bearings... my old ones were really, really hammered..

Big time.

Flat.

(They were 2.0 bearings, old style... same type replaced...)

Yea, I duuno, I'm pretty bummed..

I mean, on the upside now that I got a nice 1.0(-) camber per side - car handles LIKE A DREAM! - and the strut bearings were falling out... so meh... I was there... thought I'd give it a shot.

So I feel like I had the wheels off for a good reason..

But still, 45$ - down the crapper.

As for things comming down, the springs and cup kit are well used, very well used.. and I am sure unless I get some sag 4 years from now out of the mounts, I'll never see that 15mm again.

I'm glad you could all learn from my mistakes. Moe was right.

Early style 2.0 bearing equipped cars had the caps, I've put them on my vr6 bearing equipped car (thanks to the PO after a coilover install) and for some reason they pop off?

You're right. They only stay on the 93-95 2.0 bearings and on Mk2's. They won't stay on VR6 bearings. It fits right over them but I don't know why they don't stay on.

well think of it this way: if the strut bearings raised your car, then think of how much higher the car would have been if you kept the stock caps

You're right. They only stay on the 93-95 2.0 bearings and on Mk2's. They won't stay on VR6 bearings. It fits right over them but I don't know why they don't stay on.

They dont work because of the ammount of "drop" the 2.0 vs the VR6 struts travel (meaning, at the top of the strut where its held into the fender... the top "cap" as it were).

If you put them on the VR6 or new style - the cap bottoms out on the strut tower and pops off.

IMHO VW got rid of them with the new design as a cost saving measure.
