Volkswagen to show "IROC" concept at Paris Auto Show« »

Volkswagen is going to show a concept called IROC (yes IROC) at the Paris Auto show.

Why IROC?

scIROCco

It will be a concept version of a Scirocco-like coupe they are working on. Inside reports suggest it will look like a cross between the Eco-Racer concept with a Concept A roofline on a two-door coupe body. This will be a front engine/FWD coupe and priced starting at a GTI price point of around $24k. While the car has gotten the green light for the European market and will be built at VW's Portugal facility at the end of 2007, no decision has been made yet whether to sell it here in the U.S. Considering the car will be built in Portugal it could be sold at a better margin here in the U.S. than the GTI which is built in Wolfsburg. Also given the additional costs of reinvestments in the upcoming Golf VI the Golf/Rabbit/GTI is likely to get more expensive for the U.S. market unless currency exchange rates change.

Either way we'll have a sneak peek of the Scirocco/IROC concept in about three weeks.

Sweet Jesus, Jamie! Can't you do something about this naming crap?

Does no one at VAG know what IROC means in the US? Or maybe they do and didn't realize that IROC hasn't signified a race in peoples' minds for about 20 years now?

Perfect.

I can take it to Scarborough Beach, put some Mazola in my hair, a few (dozen) gold chains and braclets, and pick up a ton of ladies with tall hair.

Oh, the acronyms will live again, maybe.

Apparently the people on the "names" team have lost touch with reality in a severe way.

Personally, I think I could do better with a Boggle set with missing letters that I could get from a garage sale.

So, does the VW IROC have anything to do with the International Race of Champions (IROC)?

Now that's an IROC!

The Camaro isn't the only IROC out there.

Anyway, this is only the name of the concept, not the car that is coming out.

hmmmm, didn't we already go thru this once before, say late 80s early 90s. it worked out great then, i'm sure it will be an overwhelming success again.

oh wait, this time VAG actually has their crap together.........ya, right!

Ok...

Good for VW for making an effort at bringing back some sort of sport coupe. That's cool, I'm glad that they're doing it, and I can't wait to see it.

But (and I know it's been said already...) Christ in a BASKET - what in the hell has gotten into VW's naming folks lately? They REALLY need to rethink the name of this, even if they're just using it for the concept. The amount of bad press they'll get just in the car mags and among people like us will be incredibly hard to overcome. Someone (Jamie? Anyone?) needs to get on the horn with them and let them know what an absolute disaster this name will be if it is AT ALL associated with this project, at ANY stage.

Honestly... I'm speechless with the amount of stupidity it must have come up with to choose this name. It's like they're TRYING to hurt themselves.

Wow.
