VWvortex Feature: Eod Factory Tour« »

We have toured quite a few automobile factories over the years and it is always a unique experience to watch something go from raw materials to the cars we enjoy so much. VWvortex recently had an opportunity to tour Volkswagen's Autoeuropa factory in Portugal where the new Eos is being built. While the Autoeuropa factory has been around for over ten years building the Sharan and Ford Galaxy joint project, the Eos is their newest baby and something they are intensely proud of.

The Eos is also the first product Autoeuropa will export to the North American market and everyone we spoke to at the factory... Full Story

What I'd like to know is this: if they do find a problem at some point (say, after a vehicle has been painted, you say they inspect for flaws), what do they do? Is there a mechanism for removing that vehicle from the lineup and having it immediately repainted? How does that affect the parts lined up for that vehicle later on (i.e., a set of wheels designated to be paired with that vehicle, or a specific color of seats)? Are all of those parts available on demand at the appropriate place in the line, or are they set on an "intercept course" for a body?

It depends on the the issue at hand. Paint blemishes can be worked on at the end of the line (as can other minor repairs). Workers can stop the whole line if there is a major problem that requires it. They can also slow the line down to a crawl if it appears to be a minor issue. Otherwise the problem or flaw gets noted with the vehicle and tracked. At the end of the line it is pulled and anything that needs to be corrected gets taken care of.

Overall since most manufacturers have been building cars a long time now they have learned a lot and work pretty darn efficiently with very few problems or accidents. But on occasion someone gets careless with a torque wrench and accidently dings a car for example and the ding is marked wiht stickers, noted in the tracking program and the car gets pulled at the end of the line.

There is an inspection area at the end of the production area just before the cars go to the paint area where each chassis is measured with lasers to ensure each chassis is being assembled to spec. They also pull random cars off the line and go through them and look for anything flawed. When we were there the line was moving slower than it is normally capable of because they are still in early production and want to ramp up slowly to make sure the system is bulletproof first.

By the way, I've added a gallery with a few more photos in addition to the original photos HERE

"will also build the forthcoming "Scirocco" coupe in late 2007"

For me, that is the best VW news yet.

Anyway, an amazing factory and an amazing car. The paint process is the most impressive I've seen. Also, I like how the roof is so light and can be removed with 4 major fasteners. It has its own ECU too. Wow.

Finally, each car is driven around a short test track to ensure there are no immediate problems and no squeeks or rattles.

Now if they only did that before I got my MKV GLI.....

That was great, thanks! Maybe I missed it, but how long does it take to complete a vehicle? I bet it'd be amazing to see everything at full speed.

Is there any chance of them having a new customer program that involves touring the factory where your new car was built, like is available with BMW? I'd imagine not. Could be cool though.

I don't know how many miles you have on your GLI, but ours has about 12,000 miles so far and it is tight as a drum - which having owned a number of VW's is a welcome change.

Thatnks for the wonderful tour. I'm portuguese and my mom lives near Lisbon, and all she has been talking about is how they were going to produce the Eos there. She was quite happy about it considering that it brought in more jobs into the area and how proud the people are to be able to contribute greatly to the automotive community this way.

That was an excellent report. The reading mentioned this plant produced vehicles for Ford & Seat but Ford has sinced pulled out. One question...How many Eos models are produced daily?

Yes, because it would be much better to build it in the back of a chop shop since it's not a car that you deem worthwhile.

It may not be something you care for, but I have to imagine it will do just fine without your purchase.
