 Bosal Header for the A2 chassis« »

I am considering going from the dual collector/dual downpipe OEM setup to the Bosal try-Y header.

The problem I am having is understanding which header is the right one for my '86 A2 chassis.

A lot of places sell the Bosal on-line, and if I enter my year Golf I keep getting the Bosal # 999774 exhaust:

One place that I trust (TT) sells the Bosal, and they dont use the Bosal model # but show a picture that looks something like this 999776 model:

The Bosal catalog doesnt list the '86 and '87 with 8V. http://www.bosalperformance.co....html So maybe most of the parts-is-parts places are going by a mistaken bit of info from someone, by assigning the A1 header number 999774 for these years and TT is right using what apears to be the 999776.

I am inclined to think the 999776 is the correct header for all the A2 8V. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, this header appears to be the choice for the 2.0 engines. Does this mean the header hangs down at the 3rd collector excessively on the 1.8?

I'm not sure I agree. I have the bosal/brospeed header on mine Walter and it looks more like the one on the top. I'll check to see if I can see the plate/part number tonight (I just wrote a reminder on my hand).

I have a 4-1 header that someone left in the back of one of the '87 GTI I picked up for parts cars. It is not for these cars. Its general shape resembles the 999774 (top pic) in that its 4 pipes turn straight down from the head, then around the oil pan they turn straight back. I believe this was a required attribute of the A1 chassis to clear the steering rack. I know this header will not fit my A2 as the bends run smack into where the steering rack and K frame are located. By the way, that 4-1 header has tubes that are are only 1 1/4" ID. Not sure what it is for, but surely not a 1.8.

It looks from the photos above as though the 999774 follows the same path. Whereas the 999776 seems to mimic the shape of my present dual outlet manifold and downpipes.

I am going to eat crow a bit...the two piece design of the top header is just like mine...however, the shape of the bottom piece is not, and it looks more like the bottom one (sorry Peter). I've got a picture of mine somewhere...I'll try to post it.

looks like it will flow a bit better than the stock mani, eh!

That does look like a decent header.

OK, great! Thanks everyone.

Hopefully this will help anyone shopping for such a header avoid getting the wrong one because of the gap in the Bosal catalog and resulting wrong callout from many auto parts sites.

Just bought a Bosal header for my 90 16v Jetta it looks like the bottom one very nice header. It was alot cheaper than a new manifold and down pipe at $700 for them. The header was only $350
