I live in a dense development in what is more properly known as Tyson's Corner. But thanks for noticing. There are also plenty of beautiful older homes here, since this is one of the area's oldest suburbs - and lots of actual mansions rather than the Mc type. But yes, there are more than a few ugly, architecturally hideous McMansions, too, and I hate them in my backyard as much as I do halfway across the country. I live in a 1200ft^2 condominium.

If you want to see the sort of development that makes my skin crawl, you have to go out to Clarksburg, MD. Way out in the middle of nowhere so it displaces farms and natural beauty. Designed specifically to do nothing but cause traffic. These way-too-far-out 'burbs are what keeps threatening junkyards and race tracks, which, when built, were so far away from cities that they figured no one in their right mind would want to commute from there. Hopefully the housing bubble burst will curb some of this ridiculousness, at least on the east coast where you can't just create something from nothing in the middle of the desert like you can in AZ.

But don't mind my anger - our governor just announced that the Metro rail through my town will be above-ground, which will cost a little less, but ensure that it remains a clump of disconnected, unwalkable malls and office parks rather than the edge-urban neighborhood it could be. Mind you, I'm still happy it's coming at all...

Actually it just started pouring rain a little bit ago. I may have to put off my trip until tomorrow!

It's like a cancer. I'm 45 min from Tyson's, and every time I turn around some developer is clear-cutting an apple orchard to put some more 4,000 sq. ft. ugly vinyl-sided monstrosities, with no windows on the end walls. On lots that are too small for the house.

Don't worry, wasn't trying to get personal. I grew up 1/2 mile from Mt. Vernon, "way" back then that was considered to be the boonies by some.

I know what you mean about the XL house on the XS lot.

I am a developer/contractor, so don't blame me for providing a service that is in demand!

That is a bizarre looking enginebay too, is it just sucking up heated air from the bay to heat up the cabin? Or what is that open-ended metal tube for? Props for huge bonnet too.
