VWvortex: 30th Anniversary GTI - UK Edition | « » 5:13 PM 10-26-2006 | |
|
The Short Version: Volkswagen UK (so far) has announced a 30th Anniversary GTI for their market with an uprated 2.0T with 230hp mated to DSG. Our take: We've known for quite some time that VW has been planning a 30th Anniversary GTI for the European market and a similar 25th Anniversary GTI for the U.S. market (yes, the U.S. market got the GTI five years later). VW UK has released two photos and a press release on the UK version of the 30th AE while VWAG has so far remained silent on the model - but we expect that to change. Even more perplexing is that VW UK seems to have taken one of the older original GTI 30th Anniversary Study photos and photoshopped a set of 18" BBS CH-style wheels that VW is calling "Pescara" and a Great Britain license plate on the front. What isn't clear is if we'll be getting the BBS-style wheel on the U.S. 25th Anniversary GTI when it arrives next year or the originally planned black Huffmeister wheels (our vote is for the BBS wheel by the way). Power with the 2.0T has been upped from 200hp to 230hp in the Anniversary Edition. In addition the car gets body painted lower pieces, unique anniversary trim like Red stitching, Golf-ball shift knob and Interlagos plaid cloth inserts with leather bolstered sport seats. We've put a call into our VW sources to find out details on the U.S. version (if they are available yet) and will report back as soon as we know more. Full Story...

Europe pays more for VW's than we pay here... We are spoiled. My old MKIV golf was made in Brazil, price here: $15025 price there $25000SD. Go figure.

I could go for a 25th Anniversary edition. Upgraded brakes and suspension would be excellent and a +. I hope they come out in special colors like the 20th's did! Hopefully we'll get the upgraded 230hp. Possibly not due to our lack of octane (91) being the highest US, which is a main reason why the S3 will never make it to our shores.

from what i was told they produce the gti, golf, jetta, and beetle in brazil or mexico.the others are produced in germany or (hungary?)lol, sorry just took a midterm and my brain is fried.either way-230hp, does this mean its going to have the internal support mods like the s3?sometihng to think about.i hope the extra horsepower doesnt just come from more air being pushed out of that snail.anyone have any input

lol, I love it when people freak about that. VW doesnt price the GTI in pounds and then take a direct conversion to USD. The price is market dependent, meaning VWAG sets the prices for US GTI's without a whole lot of consideration into what they are selling for in England or Albania....

You don't know what they did to make more power. They could have a modifyed turbo on there (like the KO3s and the KO3 on the MKVI) or better internals. The 230 version could also get 50+ HP benefits from a chip like APR.

*YAWN*Doesn't look that much different than the current GTI and from what I can tell, is only a tiny bit faster. Damn it, I want to be impressed by something to be called an anniversary edition.

Except for the engine upgrade, it does not appear to have the breadth of upgrades from the standard GTI that the MKIV special editions had. But then again, the MKV GTI doesn't need as much work.I'd be really disappointed if the U.S. version was automatic only too. If the U.S. version does come with a manual, I'll wait for the special edition. If it's automatic only, I'll opt for a 5-door manual and eventually chip it.

if they can put the bodykit, wheels, chip upgrade, etc in an affordable package (like the MkIV 337/20th and GLI) i'll definitely be there...

and youa re telling me this will be called the 30th ae?? What's so difference about it besides the wheels? maybe the lip and the horses? but It does't seem like something i'd want to get. I thik i'd rather go w/ the old 20th.

there is nothing (personally) that separates the 30th AE, from the pack. it just looks plain, interior is just as the current GTI.
