Killer Rabbit Truck VR6 Build | « » 9:05 PM 11-9-2006 | |

OK, So with all of the VR6 builds going i figured i'd start a post too, maybe i can get some new ideas from you guys and give some ideas to people doing this swap too. Here is what i started with, a good old green diesel that was sitting in a farm in eastern washington since 93:

Modified steering rack w/o linkage:

Front Cross Member and core support swap, I decided on the round headlights:

Coilovers and the 5 lug goods, I went with mk3 coils and they fit the rabbit strut cap, easy bolt on Also some new MK2 tie rods :
MK3 Dash:
How it sits right now:
Let me know what you guys think and if you see something i overlooked:

Are those weitecs in the front? They like to leak more than other brands, and the ones on my VR6 rabbit leaked in a matter of weeks after installed new. Just a heads up!

i'm about to pickup my lift this weekend and then mock up my mounts.yeah i heard the weitec stories before, but i got em cheap and no one else would sell me the front 2 coils for a mk3, if they go poopie on me i'll probably end up 4 linking the rear and baggin it.

I had a 96 gti vr6 that i used to get all my swap parts, I used stock rabbit control arms modified with mk3 vr ball joints, then moved my ball joint location forwards about 3/8". I used the mk3 gti vr spindles, hubs brakes everything, I used mk3 front coils and bolted them to the rabbit strut bearing/cap. Then i used mk2 non power steering tie rods since they are longer and make it a nice stock clean fit. we'll see how things go when i go to align it, but im' confident it should be all square. Also i'm going to be running ABS and had to modify the rear axle to accept the mk3 vr rear spindles and rear rotors, i had to notch the plate to clear the lower caliper bolt and the wheel speed sensor. Hope this helps

the cab ... its comming allong well... i want to pull of Mark V wheels.. but as everyone knows that mark 1's being 4x100--->are really really tough to convert to 5x112. So what i did was VR6 spindles and the whole bit in the back, and in the front....well lets just say i am comming up with a nifty solution... ie a solution much like killerrrabbittruck, one that looks totally OEM, will have pics up when i get it all the pieces together thanks for the interest

You got any closer pics of the ends of your dash? I'm doing mine in my caddy right now, and I wana see what other options there are besides hacking the door cards. Also what HVAC setup are you running? MKI spliced to MKIII controls? or what? Thanks and keep up the good post!

I don't see why you would have to hack the door cards. I had to cut the dash in two pieces take some material out then splice them back together. I used the piece i cut out as a "sleeve" screwed both pieces to the sleeve, then fiberglassed the back of it and used some foam to smooth the contour where i cut it on the top side, i also trimmed offf lots from the edge against the windshield and i hacked out all of the HVAC Stuff, I think i'll put some gauges where the climate control was and carry a towel like it's an aircooled, I don't see myself driving this on rainy days anyways. This is not going to be a daily, more af a fun car. I am going to do a little more trimming and smooth out the vinyl on the dash a little more i can roll my windows though, just barely

I love that original tan dashboard! Would look out of place in my black interior though. Good work you're doing there. That new dash looks like it fits really well.

You going with a combination of a custom drive shaft along with the stock MK3 one or are you going for a mix of Stock shafts? Baz

As for colors i'm thinking of green or black, not the stock green though, something darker like forest green.I will use the stock passenger MK3 shaft, and i'm going to shorten the drivers side axle, should be easy though it's solid. And as for that top secret string, it's there so i know where the hood will be for clearance issues I'm still debating on what to do with the rear mounts, the stock ones don't seem to be where i want them so i've been thinking about making my own from 1/4" plate and some 2x3 tube stock. I'll post pics when i get them done.

I"m not sure what that color would look like, but if you have a picture, i'd love to see it.As for the rear mounts, i'm trying to find a way to use the stock mk3 mount so i can easily get stiffer ones later on, but looks like a good place to start from there. And i don't get what you are trying to say there? How it's not going to sit?

Nice job on the rear mounts. That's more or less what my design looks like. I just need to get around to making them now. This is just a thought but here goes:I know height of the oil pan is always going to be a problem with MK1 VR6 swaps but what are the ways around it? Here's a couple of ideas I've had to possibly help out if I can afford them. 1. Short runner intake and relocated TB for more clearance on top. 2. Suspension spacers and coilovers for both stock height, adjustability and stiffer springs. 3. Oil pan modification....... don't query me on this one, it's just a spark of an idea at the minute. Last but not least: 4. Skid plate. (lowers it further but at least takes the hits). So, any thoughts on these? Cheers Baz
