Ghetto shave (don't move me!) will it gold?« »

So... I got bored one day and decided to find a way to shave my hatch wiper and this is what I did.

Step one: Remove the wiper motor and everything around it.

Step two: Use a jig saw to cut around the wiper blade mounting hole. Make enough cuts so that when hammered, the metal can lay flat.

Step three: Using body hammers and a dolly, hammer the raised section of the mounting hole flat by placing the dolly behinds the raised area. be careful not to dent the hatch. If you DO dent the hatch, tap with a rounded hammer from behind and the dent should pop out.

Step four: use a grinder to smooth any high areas out. It's better for the metal to be low than high.

Step five:Use a piece of sheet metal and hold to shape of the hatch. Run the metal over where you have worked to check for high and low spots. repeat as necessary

Step six: after shaping is complete, take a 3x3 piece of sheet metal and use a 3M adhesive and C clamps to hold it in place behind the wiper hole. Allow to cure for 3 hours. Use the C clamps to keep firm pressure on the plate.

Step seven: After the adhesive is cured, remove the C clamps and lay Bondo over the shaved area. After the Bondo is applied, allow to cure and shape with sand paper.

Step eight: repeat step five to ensure a level surface.

Step Nine: Prime and observe your handy work.

This is what I did in order to shave my hatch and I was just curious to see what people thought. do you think It'll hold?
The cool part is it only took like... two hours. You waste more time waiting for it to dry and you don't have to weld!

INteresting idea... I don't think the adhesive and bondo will hold up that great though. It will still look nice. White is a forgiving color for body work vs. black.

Fusor makes a panel bonding adhesive which is approved by GM, Ford, BMW and such that is made specifically to be topcoated with "bondo". FYI

Wait to try for a few hours or take 10 minutes to go wheel out the welder and do it the "right" way........ hm.

I guess for everyone who doesn't have easy access to welder though, it is a good way of doing it.

depending on what you used, there is adhesives that will hold just as good as any weld. SEM i believe its called is a 2 stage epoxy, my buddy shaved his door handled by cutting metal and holding it in there w. this stuff...... 4.5 yrs later there still holding, AND the car was in an accidnt an nothing popped out itsall about the cure time!

Looks tight to me. Should hold just fine since its a very small area. For the badge area try just epoxy and hold the bondo.

never mind the Nay sayers....Today you can get adhesive just about as strong as weldin. That area on the car does not see much abuse or pressure. IT should hold out. Nice job...I might consider doing the shaving this way!

really be sure that you used a good primer, one that won't just wash off with some cleaner. I ran into that painting my car, learned the hard way.

I know there's this stuff called U-Pol, it's more expensive I think. You can use etching primer, but that really only works on bare metal. The big key is to really scuff up the paint that is already there if you are going to paint over it. Use the red/maroon 3M Scotchbrite hand pads, the coarse grain is enough to take the shine out of the clear.

Also a big thing, be sure to keep everything super clean, and use a paint prep cleaner by ppg or someone before you lay down any paint.

theres is an adhesive thats is made to replace weldin and it has the same or greater bonding strength that weld does. Its a great way to do body work when u have a few small jobs and dont want to invest in a welder.

hehheh, gotta weld it man, especially on a panel that gets slammed shut. harborfrieght.com has small portable welders for like $50 or maybe a little more, which are perfect for projects like this. I've had one for a couple years and it still works fine, just doesn't have some major brand name stamp on it to ad a few hundred bux to the cost!

sean... we'll just weld it. nick can weld it, we'll grab a disc sander from my dad and some bonda from pepboys and we'll even it out, and ill spray it. trust me... it'll work a lot better.

i actually went to tech school for auto body work, and metal to metal bonders are being used more and more. some of them (i forget the names) are actually considered to be stronger than welds now. don't quote me on this cuz ii'm not sure if it 100% true or not, but i read, ( or was told by an instructor) that lotus elise's and exige's do not have any welds in the the body structure. they used metal to metal bonders instead.

Sikaflex and its line are much stronger then a lot of welds. A lot of bus bodies are held together using this product, and yes a lot fo race cars use non metalic bonding instead of welding to save weight. Epoxies are also better at sealing as they don't heat enough to compromise the galvanising or rust treating process.
