And so another winter project begins...« »

Well I started the other day on a slow tear down of my new Corrado. '93 SLC with 150k miles and some serious "timing" issues that seem to have caused some interference inside that purty little VR6.

It took a couple days to tear down the front of the car due to my already hectic real work schedule and my wanting to investigate all thats different in the Corrado from my old MKIIIs.

When I arrived it looked like so...

It's a little darker in there when you close the door...

We took our time(me and a buddy CasroVW taking all the plugs off and having a grand ol' time.

don't mind the eye protection, i was tired of coolant dripping in my eyes the day before and just put them on for giggles.

Pretty soon we had the intake manifold off and were getting ready to separate the motor from the exhaust and axles

But we were all stricken with a terrible case of the lazies and called it a day. So I leave the first post in this thread with an attempt at an artsy picture of the valve cover.

Plans are to pull rebuild and put some fun parts in the motor along with refresh all the aging suspension bits and have a good last project with my dad before I move away here in a couple years.

Stay tuned, hopefully pull the motor this weekend and start tearing it down and ordering parts.

***UPDATE***

We got the head off and this is what we found...

YUMMY!!!

Also, what did everyone use to pull the valves? the special tool looks a bit overboard, and the valve spring compressor looked do able, but we didnt have ours in house, it was at the shop

Are you going to go through the bottom end also or just redo the Head?
What do you plan to do to the Pistons, anything?

Seeing all of this has made me start thinking about swapping in my other VR6 and completely redoing this one with new pistons and lightweight rods. I was already planning to work the head, but this may sway me in the direction of a more complete build of the whole engine.

I may be saving a lot of money on insurance and gas soon by not paying either

good stuff, i just did this same style teardown/rebuild.

my only reccomendation would be to seriously consider weather or not you will go FI at any time soon. this way, you can build the motor accordingly, while it is out.

also, i like that you mentioned the "model year" of your dog, it made me lol.

" i have a 1996 shi tsu, it is a little old, and can't learn new tricks, but i got a deal on it, and it runs well. plus, i like the color."

haha, yeah, he keeps us smiling even is we're bleeding.

I won't be going FI any time soon, well 1 of these motors probably will, but not this one. I'm going to be keeping this lower mile motor with moderate power and then during my off time waiting for my buddy to pay for the other one i'm gonna start building it, so he can pay me more

He wants turbo VR, and well I want to build one, but I don't wanna deal with one so i'll build him one and let him deal with it for the next 100k miles

I would suggest when getting valves finding some that have a 1mm thinner stem. This allow for a WHOLE lot more air flow into the head and a good boost in power. Also unorthodox racing pulleys actually free up some power to and are easy to install you might want to think about that.

how could this help air flow? the air doesnt travel down the stem, it comes in on the sides...?

cause MJM packaged it for me, it was nearly as cheap for all the plastic bits as it was just for the t-stat, i've got plastic crackpipe experience so I will be getting the metal one... your link doesnt work, but i can find one

The valves are also quite confusing can you find more info for me?

You've had to of heard of undercut valves before? Having a smaller stem on your valve also for more air in the chamber there for more better flow more HP. When I was building my motor PIGSDOFLY actually told me about this as he has it done on his rado. If you don't trust me, ask him about it. I'm sure he can explain it a little better.

 Re: (speediG60) »« »

Basically the stem of the valve is cut down from the normal diameter that it would be in the valve guide in the flow area of the intake or exhaust port.

It is just a necking down of the valve stem where the air flows, essentially cheating your head into thinking it has larger ports ( think area where the stem isn't ).

It's common to drop to 7mm stems ( which taper down to 6.5mm ) on a G60 which came with 8mm valve stems stock.

I have no idea where you would get valves like that for a VR.

Jeebus! nice to see you in here again, even if you moved before I actually got to see ya!

vwspeed got hacked a bit back when I was working to much to sleep let alone have an e-life

on with the updates

We tore down the blue Jetta and its motor and now have 2 vr's in the garage waiting for 1 to be put together and then the other will be built and sold to my buddy. I'm going more on the mild side and my dad actually wants to turbo the other one, so Cory can pay for that

On with the pictures

All of my remaining vehicles, hopefully new blue(the blue jetter) is gone soon, but never forgotten

Sweet digger dude

The other little beast

Thats all i got yesterday, if you want any info on a specific picture I can post that up, but theres too many for my brain to think
