No matter how well you drive...« »

This afternoon my GTI suffered from another driver's carelessness. Got t-boned in the mildest way possible, given that it was a Chevy Suburban with a huge grille guard.

The scenario: Waiting on a red light (facing East), the Suburban comes from the South and performs a left turn. With a wet pavement, a young female driver on her cellphone didn't notice her rear tires were spinning. Next thing I see is a 3 ton Chevy heading for my door.

I tried moving as close as possible to the car in front, and as far away from the danger. It took two real long seconds before the truck stopped, barely touching my car.

I had two eye-witnesses come talk to me and they were a lot more angered than me. They even dialed 911 before I had a chance to. As you can imagine, there wasn't even a light scratch on the Suburban.

Pics:

My wife, highly pissed

Please drive safely, and happy Christmas.

I actually sighed in relief when I saw the damage. I was expecting a lot worse.

My wife in the other hand almost looses her bearing, she was about to start yelling... or crying. :/

People like that can't drive properly to begin with - they're just worse with a phone.

Funny how so many bad drivers have huge vehicles that are capable of causing the most damage.

Hope the costs to fix aren't too outrageous.

Thanks god to let you celerbrate ur Christmas in one good piece.

Have you noticed that many of the SUV drivers are females? They love SUV becoz they think* bigger size and higher ride height will give them better protection and vision.

I never understand why many of the drivers love to talk on their cellphones when they are driving. On Wednesday's evening, when I was about to leave the gym-I was already in my car with the engine started, I saw a mid-aged woman who parked beside me, was walking to her car, right after her butt on the driver seat, she dialed her cellphone instead of fastening the seat belt nor starting the engine. She kept talking when she was reversing her car from the parking spot, since she was on the line (she didn't use handfree), she therefore was so sluggish to turn the steering wheel; she failed to leave the spot with three times of back-and-forth. Another car was just waiting for her spot right in front of my car so I had to wait. The driver who was waiting about to show her his middle finger.

Doh! Fair enough. That's what I get for late-night posting.

I'm just glad everyone's alright and the damage is minimal. Should be an easy fix for a competent shop.

Would've been a bit humorous if the side airbags had gone off in this instance after seeing threads of the car rolling over without going off...

That's my car... it's always harder to see the pics when it's the exact color and rim combination you have. If it was Pkg 2 I don't think I woulda been able to look at those pictures.

In all honesty.. cell phones /cars/ women are not a good match.. Whenever I see a car driving like a moron.. look at driver sure enough head tilted on the phone.. and with FREE nights and weekends.. it worse.. BAN CELL PHONE USAGE in a MOVING car that can't afford a 29.95 blue tooth ear piece!

Believe me, it was. I almost didn't feel it inside my car. My wife confessed last night that she would've froze if she had been driving, which would've resulted in a hit straight on the driver's door, with a little more force.

SUVs can't seem to keep their wheels on the road these days.

thats because all the tools that drive them seem to think that 4wd capability exempts them from the laws of physics.

See if you had left your wife at home, and just brought your fast with you in the passenger's seat, you would have been light enough to avoid that hit and prevent the accident

I have always had a problem with people using cell phones while driving. I once had a friend lose his sister because she went to answer her cellphone while she was driving. She wasn't paying attention and drove into the opposite lane and hit an SUV head on.

I also remember seeing a study done were people were forced to go through several driving situations while on cell phones. The drivers performed MUCH worse in these situations than they did when they were not on the phone.

I saw something like that on Myth Busters. They made them do a AutoX style course driving with full attention, driving while on a cell phone, and driving just over the legal limit for a DWI. Everyone doing the test drove the worst when they were on the phone. They even did better when they were intoxicated.

But they weren't "intoxicated" - because they performed the driving UNDER THE LEGAL LIMIT of .08 BAC. Techinally - they would have been legal drivers (unless you are under 21) since they did not exceed the legal limit for drinking. If their BAC was .12 or higher I'm sure the story would have been QUITE different.
