VWvortex: Volkswagen Announces 50-state BLUETEC Jetta TDI for 2008« »

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Volkswagen of America, Inc. today unveiled its cleanest diesel ever for the U.S., the Jetta TDI. Additionally, the company announced that this new clean diesel will be available to the U.S. market in the spring of 2008. This Jetta TDI will meet emissions standards applicable in all 50 states, including the most stringent “TIER 2/BIN 5” or “LEV II/LEV” requirement limiting nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions to 0.05 g/mile. Full Story...

Exactly.

Any other cars with TDI/ Bluetec in the next year?

What engine will be used?

How is the NOx storage compartment serviced? What I mean is, does it need replacement or refilling? This is important, because VW Service Departments are not the crowd favorites here.

Nice to see VW taking a leadership role in improving fuel efficiency. They (VW) should be able to sell all of the new Bluetec Jetta's that they can make next year. The performance and fuel efficiency numbers of the new Bluetec Jetta will be interesting as compared to the current Jetta TDI (diesel). I wonder if VW had to give up some fuel efficiency for higher performance and/or lower emmisions in the newer engine?

Side Note: Too bad Ford and GM don't aren't making similar announcements. Of well, maybe I'll think about buying American again in another decade or so.

Bad excuse in my opinion. The specific detailed information(price, gas mileage, engine specs) in the Edmunds article comes directly from Volkswagen of North America. How much more offical does VWVortex want?

Currently out in Europe, they have certain model lines equipped with the same 2.0 TDI engine with output figures of 168hp and 258 lbs./ft compared to the 138hp and 236 lbs./ft that we are slated to get. The obvious reason being because the Jetta model in Europe only comes the 140hp version. There are other things that may include their decision, but this I know for a fact.

 Re: (jayparry) »« »

The hp and torque numbers listed on Edmunds are just the ones from the current (non-CR) 140hp 2.0 TDI in Europe (there is also a 170hp version).

It is understandable that VW would first introduce a 140hp version, and if everything works out, perhaps offer a larger hp version later in sufficiently strong markets, as they did with the European TDI.

It also seems common sense that the modified CR and injectors don't affect torque or max hp much. (In other words, using the current Euro numbers should be extremely close to the final US numbers). Also, since NOx is just removed via a catalyzer in these cars, there is not much of an additional loss.

As to mileage, again, using the European km/l figures and translated to US mpg, you get something like 33/49/42 (European) city, highway, and mixed cycles. The 45mpg cited by Edmunds sounds like an attempt of stating average mileage while ignorant of the difference between Imperial and US gallons.

In previous official VW news releases, the Beetle was announced to get a CR TDI in 2008. I see no reason why these two cars and the Golf/Rabbit should not get the Diesel engines at about the same time, in the US.

2006 US VW sales indicate very strong hatchback numbers, in particular for the more expensive models (like the GTI). So, VWoA can no longer make the argument that hatchbacks only deserve second consideration, or only sell in low trim levels with little of the stuff that makes money, in the US. Now, as to building the Rabbit at profit in Germany, that is another story.

With the Passat, VW may still debate whether it will get a beefed-up 4cyl. Diesel or a 6cyl. in the US, the latter requiring the more complicated and expensive urea injection.

- No, it's not the same engine. The current European high-performance Diesels use a low pressure rail in conjunction with piezo Pumpe-Düse, and have no NOx removal.

- No, both the Jetta and the Golf/Rabbit are available with the 170hp Diesel, in Germany. Just spec one on their web site.

Personally, I like the idea of a 170hp Diesel Golf/Rabbit. It still has good fuel economy, and goes 0-100km/h in 8.2s (~7.8s official time to 60mph). That is, a good driver may get 7 to 7.5s, and with a chip you would easily reach the mid 6s regime. Nice Diesel!

I hope VW is ready, willing and able to handle the inevitable run on these cars. Especially in diesel-starved CARB states. Hopefully they will be pumping these things into Massachusetts and California and not letting dealers get the chance to rape customers. Could be the biggest thing since the Prius in some parts.

Now if Diesel prices would go down that would be perfect. I still don't understand why it is more than premium still.

Im guessing because of all the trucks.

Diesel should be less than regular unleaded as it is in Europe. This would help instigate US buyers to think clean and buy more diesel powered cars. Not only are they cleaner and more fuel efficient, but have loads of torque and sound awesome! to VW for taking the first steps with MB. We need to get these 6.1L American hunks of metal off our roads.

Diesel prices are high right now because of the war in iraq. The Military gets first dibs on diesel for their humvees and m1's before the us consumer gets it. once they start pulling troops out (if ever) they should go back down.

WRONG, most of the Fuel use by the Military overseas is sourced overseas, (we are still paying for it with our taxes)
Keep in mind-
Nearly all semi-trucks, delivery vehicles, buses, trains, ships, boats and barges, farm, construction, and military vehicles and equipment have diesel engines. In 2005, diesel fuel accounted for about 15 percent of total refined petroleum products and 75 percent of the total distillate consumed in the United States. On-highway motor vehicles use about 80 percent of total diesel fuel, with off-highway vehicles, construction and farming equipment and diesel-electric generators consuming the rest.
More Diesel Vehicles, less sources equals higher prices.

I had assumed there would never be a new Jetta Wagon. Aren't they going to try to sell us some sort of SUV Jetta based thing that will cost $2000 for the image and have 15% less cargo space than the Wagon would?
