 DIY : REFINISHING / WHEEL / REPAIR !!« »

hey everyone how's it goin?

well i looked through the DIY section and did not see anything on this, i got these wheels as replacement for my stockies but they had some major curbage on one of the wheels, i know that this is a pain and can be very expensive to repair! so i decided to make a DIY on repairing / painting wheels as i repaired mine ...

Disclaimer : I am not responsible for you not following instructions located on the products used, or any damage that you may inadvertantly cause to your wheel or yourself while doing this DIY, Furthermore if you repair your wheel like this it will no longer be possible to have a polished finish

Materials needed :

if only painting the wheel faces :

*will need more paint / primer if painting inside of the wheels*

-2 cans of your favorite color wheel paint
-2 cans of Automobile Primer * I use Rustoleum brand* works awesome

Repair materials:

-1 tube of Magnum Steel metal filler

Tools needed:

- wire brush
- sander or sanding block
- 220 grit sand paper
- knife
- dremel * optional *
- other miscellaneous random stuff

Metal filler

Paint I used

Sand Paper

step 1 : wash wheels really good to remove any dirt and grime.

step 2 : dry wheels thouroughly and look at that curbage one last time

step 3 : Use a knife that you dont really care about to cut off some of the metal shavings and use the dremel to smooth out those rough edges

step 4 : Follow the directions on the tube , knead the filler and apply as needed. but remember the more you apply the more you have to sand down

step 5 : Start the sanding process and sand until filler is smooth and flush with the face of the wheel.

what the finished sanding should resemble

step 6 : Clean the wheels again / dry / prep for paint

step 7 : Apply 3-5 light coats of primer and allow 10-12 mins between coats

my assembly line of madness

step 8 : Apply 4-6 light coats of wheel paint and allow 10-12 mins between coats

step 9 : After about 3 hours usually the paint is safe to handle *could vary * so remove taped areas / replace studs / center caps/ etc....

step 10 : Admire your beautiful refinished wheels

can u find the previously damaged wheel?

lets take a closer look......*areas that were damaged are pointed out*

and the finished product.......

Total Cost = $25-$30

Hope this is helpful to people, let me know what you think

I have the montes too and in the bolt area they turned yellow.

It sucks. So this would be a perfect fix

Honestly i'm not exactly sure how the pros do it, but this way is inexpensive and very reliable, the filler i used is really good stuff, 4 years ago one of my friends had a small crack in his tranny leaking slight fluid and he repaired it with that stuff and never had any more problems showing how strong this stuff is, but yeah if you do it this way then they will no longer be able to be polished , but you may want to check with your local wheel repair guy and find out if your wheels can be repaired in a way that they can still be polished

This is a godsend. I thought I'd never be able to fix all the curbage and damage on the turbo Beetle wheels on my car. You've inspired me to get out there, fix the curbage, and paint them finally. I'll be doing this in the coming week.

if all you have is scratches it wouldn't take much time at all to fix em' up, you would be suprised how easy it would be .. PM me with some pics of your wheels and i could let you know what you needed to do and approximately how much time would be needed

i'll also have to hit up one of the moderator's to see about adding this to the DIY

I think thats everyone, thanks for all of the props!! I'm glad to have helped out
