 First AutoX« »

Ok, today was my first time running the R. I ran D-stk. I was able to take second place to a Mazda Speed3. I must say, over the last 2 days, those cars have really impressed me. I was on a drive with a few of them yesterday and the one in my class today. They have put together a good package. But back to the R. Like many have stated, the under-steer is an issue. But it is a good basis and Im looking forward to running the season. Some new wheels and good tires, and the little Speed3 will be mine! I was about a 1/2 second of his time on the coarse we were running.
Now for the bad part of the day. The finish section was a quick left into the finish cones. There was room at the time that you could really build up some speed while you ran the last 200 feet. In the first run group in the afternoon session, there was a B-E-A-utiful GT3 running. The forth run was just for fun as only the first 3 runs count toward your points. The guy let his friend drive the 4th run. The friend was driving a nice mid 90's Vette and was one of the fastest cars in the run group. So as he came through the finish cones, he went to grab the brakes but got the clutch instead and this is the aftermath....

So the guy went through the cones and hit the Celica spinning it around. The GT3 then bounced of the Cel and into the Subbie and spun back around to where you see it sitting. The Subbie was knocked into the poor A3. Both the Subbie and the A3 had only been there for less then an hour. Neither was running, just spectating. Behind the Celica, you can see the finish section where you are to slow down. the GT3 came right down that section.

oh, and the R.. I should have some better pics of it on coarse later...

both the subbie and the A3 were parked normal in their spots. So you can see how much the Subbie was moved over. The Celica was just pulling into his spot and was facing the other way!!

I wonder how this works with insurance, i heard that if you are racing at a track and something happens, it isnt the insurance companys that should have to pay since it didnt happen on the street, and you put your car in danger by racing. but i would assume the peoples cars who got hit should get it covered since they were parked. i dont know if this is even true though, anyone confirm?

As a Solo Safety Steward, who ever built that course and approved it should be held 100% accountable for this disaster. You never build the course so there is a high speed section that would allow you to run towards the staging area or the pits. At least no one was hurt as the cars an be replaced.

INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!

If the ending was that tight, it is the fault of the course design.

Congrats on your first autocross, now find another club to run with because it may be your car next.

The owner just kept saying to the guy that wrecked it "thats a $100K car you just destroyed!!" Both guys were in their mid-late 50's. The guy that wrecked has been running auto-x for years and is a past champion I believe.

The r was parked about 100 feet away. No-one was injured. Could have been bad if someone had been walking there.

holey freaking crap dudes......i have done 3 seasons at bremerton speedway and have never seen anything that retarted before.....

the worse that ever happened there was once a dentist in a lotus who thought he was a race car driver got a little too aggressive and spun out and hit the timing booth..... but even that was pretty mellow...

i don't mean to judge, however....mistakes happen....i just wouldn't want to be the safety guy at that race after that happened...

does anybody know what the deal is about insurance......if your not racing, but spectating instead, who's insurance pays for it.....doesn't the track pay for stuff like that?

From what I've found the event was at the Portland International Raceway, and was organized by the Oregon Region SCCA.

Results are here:

This is 100% the drivers fault.

Can you just imagine the check that it is going to take to cover all the damage.....and even thou the Celica was hit first it looks to be in the best shape between it, the Porsche, and the Subaru!

Thats close to 200K in cars damaged there

The Celica just deflected the Porsche into the Subbie. Kinda like a pinball game. The subbie played the roll of the safer barrier for the A3. There might be vid of the crach, I am working on that..

Holy crap!!! I'm glad I didn't make the trip up to PIR after seeing this! I'll stick with the local (safe) courses here in Eugene!

As for insurance, it all depends... A friend of mine slid into the the infield on a track in Texas, and hit a drain that flipped the car over.. and over.. His insurance Co. covered the car even though it was a track accident, but then dropped him right after.

Nice results on your first round in DS!! Was the Mazda on street rubber or RComps?

Just when I was building up confidence about tracking my car! This is the reason why I am so hesitant. One guy told me: "to enjoy tracking, you must be willing to write your whole car off, only then will you enjoy the event". And that, I was slowly getting over, but now... now I think I'll stick with my back country roads, at least there if I F up it's my fault! I would be pissed if someone else F'ed up and I pay the price!!

Thanks. I didnt get too good of a look at his car. We were in the second run group after the crash so the mood was a little tense. I do know the guy driving has been auto-xing for a few years now. I am use to full track so its a bit of a chance in driving style for me. I was tracking my 03 GLI VR last year so its soo nice to be back in a AWD car!!!

For the most part, tracking is a safe. You will get idiots running from time to time though. This was a case of a driver driving a car he was not familar with at 100% when he should have been at about 60%. When yoru doing full track events, 90% of the time your dealing with the owner of the car driving his own. In auto-x, its easy to hope into a friends car. Which is a rule that should be looked at
