The New Golf Pirelli | « » 3:06 PM 5-18-2007 | |

Wolfsburg, 17 May 2007 - The Golf GTI Pirelli is back; a powerful, fast and very exclusive GTI. Volkswagen is continuing the history of one of the best known limited edition models in Europe. In May 1983, the “Original Pirelli” arrived on the market. It was based on the first generation, second series Golf GTI. A distinctive identifying feature: Specially designed alloy wheels with the “Pirelli P” on their outer edges. A remarkable 10,500 cars of the special model were built and sold within half a year. Then it was over – a limited edition! If there were an Automobile Hall of Fame for young-timers, the “Pirelli GTI”, as it was called by its fans, would have long...Full Story

Looks really nice. I like that yellow color. I don't think I could ever drive a yellow car, but this as well as the mk4 20thAE edt. both bring me very close. I like the wheels, too, and the suspension looks a little lower...fits the wheels perfectly....at any rate, looks way better than the lousy fahrenheit edt. orange.

The two most original parts on there, seats and wheels, and there's no good shots of either??? WTF?Call me crazy but it bothers me when tire manufacturers put out wheels... I feel like if you're good at one, you shouldn't be good at the other. I'm 75% kidding about that.

Yes, it would be nice to see the Golf Pirelli GTI in the US. However, first things first VWOA: 1. Let's see the Edition 30 (Edition 25) here in the US. 2. It should not be stripped down like the '08 GTI's. Amenities such as Climatronic, headlight washer nozzles, etc. should return. After all, it is a special model and that's why we pay all the money we do for a VW. 3. We should have the option to choose 6 on the floor or DSG. Once the above are satisfied, I'd love to see more special editions like the Golf Pirelli GTI. After all, if VWOA has the time and money to create Triple-white beetle's, Fahrenheit Golf's, etc., I don't think this is unreasonable.

im with you on that...unless you running Pirelli R-compounds; even the top of the line Pirelli's are junk...not to mention that the azenis sports cost half as much and kill all the Pirelli tires(w/ exception to the R-compounds)... Pirelli=overpriced/over-hyped Brazilian junk

Bringing stateside or not, I think it will/would be difficult for VW dealerships to have 2-3 different special edition GTIs floating around on dealer's lots along with their regular stock of pkg 0, 1, and 2 GTIs. The *F is available in Citurs Orange The Edition 30 (25) is Red The Pirelli GTI is "Sunflower" Yellow The GTI is a nice car, but the GTI consumer would be flooded with choices. Granted, the 230BHP is a nice bump over a standard GTI, but I am just curious at what cost... It looks like some of the options list is decided for the consumer from the get go...either 6-spd only or DSG only...why couldn't they do a half and half...As good as the DSG is, there are some that would rather have the 3rd pedal. How more special edition GTIs are there? When will the Driver's Ed. be released?

i would have liked a bit more 1983 nostalgia in it as well.i wrote a bit about the original on my blog (shameless plug ) http://oneighturbo.com/2007/05...relli/ From one of my links out to a translated page http://translate.google.com/tr...tools I don't believe the red one above is an actual production Pirelli but more of an promo.. the site has tons of brochures etc. there was even an MKIV '99 put out
Here is an actual one sitting at the museum lets see if vortex blocks youtube. this is the reveal at worthersee http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsDTbb3ZfYI

I'd like to bump 2 previous thoughts...1. what's a Pirelli ed. (besides cheapo badging) without bringing back a modern interpretation of the P-Slots? In theory (excluding the engine) there's nothing that distinguishing to set it apart...yeah yeah, interior, but blah blah blah 2. Enough with the Special Editions already! Why even bother having a GTI line? Why not just call their sport-tuned hatchbacks the VW Special Edition, at least for me the novelty of the Spec. Ed.s is really wearing thin. So there's new colours of paint, big deal. Introduce them as part of the standard lineup already.... (personally my all time fav. special edition colours were Vapour Blue and Reflex Yellow-yes, NB colours, so what?)
