 Jetta sportwagen delayed« »

Quote, originally posted by VWoA »

As a result of a fire at a supplier factory, we have lost two weeks worth of 2.5L engine production in late June. While the full impact of the production loss is yet to be determined, the volume is significant enough to cause us to evaluate our options for minimizing the impact on retail sales for the balance of 2007.

As you know, the 2.5L is the primary engine for the Jetta, Rabbit, New Beetle, and New Beetle Convertible. It was also planned to be the exclusive engine for the launch volume of the new Jetta SportWagen, which was scheduled to start production for the US market in July, with a launch in September.

While we are still determining the total impact of the lost engine production, it is clear that we will have some production losses for all car lines using the 2.5L engine. To that end, we have developed a plan to minimize the impact on production losses and retail sales by delaying the introduction of the Jetta SportWagen until the spring of
next year.

Sucks for VWOA and the dealers that were counting on something new to sell, no doubt. Any idea who the supplier was or what part of the engine they make?

Two weeks of engine loss leads to a 6 month product delay? Rabbits are popular, but I didn't think that 2.5 Jettas & NBs were flying off the lot so fast that two weeks of production loss would require such a reaction. I can see a month delay, or maybe two. But then, who wants to release a new product at the tail end of the year?

This leads to the interesting possibility of VW rolling the wagon out with the 2.5 & TDI at the same time - a big product launch rather than just a product release. Would VWOA do that? They typically like to phase things to be able to say "New!" But with the TDI Jetta sedan rolling out in the the early 2008 timeframe, it would make little sense to me to delay the TDI wagon. Hmmm...

While having a limited specification on models may lead to more profits, when there are problems with major compoents on that specification it can cause serious issues with lack of salable product..you may be able to get a customer to go with another spec engine, for example, but when you only have one engine in a model, such as the Rabbit, when there is a problem with a supply of that item you have no cars to sell.

X2, and that is probably what they are going to produce in the meantime, instead. For import to Europe, of course.

VW EV, plug-in Hybrid, and/or 1.4-2.0 VVT&VVL T/dual-charged FSI engines for the US would be useful...

If the first Sportwagons were supposed to arrive in late August, shouldn't there be some already in production? Or were they just about to start production...

And why does 2 weeks of engines result in a 6 month delay?

Either way, total bummer.

i know some people have seen some out and about, probably demo vehicles...Does suck, especially when VW engine/transmission parts seem to be hard to come across as in, when they were in full production, this could only delay things further...

it's probably a tale to help get rid of the 2007 models that have only the 150 hp 2.5L engine in them still....they are not selling fast enough and thus they don't want them to be sold at too much of a discount if the 2.5L 170/180 hp engines hit in fall.

i am assuming all engines that hade the 2.5L upgrade to 170/180 hp for 2008 models will be delayed then - making it the rabbit, beetle, and jetta, would have come out this fall, just in time that the new jetta sportwagen would have come out as well.

but delaying the sportwagen and all the other 2.5L increased hp models too, will help dealers still get rid of their 07 inventories with the 150 hp 2.5L engines.

I doubt VW would delay the 170hp engines in the Jetta sedan. It's VWoA's bread-and-butter model and they need a horsepower bump to stay competitive.

Based on the message from VWoA I'd have to guess that this large fire actually damaged/destroyed 2 weeks worth of production, engines that were just sitting waiting to be shipped to final production facilities. But no doubt the factory itself was damaged and will require repair. This repair time could lead to additional weeks if not months of no additional production.

Either way, big bummer.

I made the same joke.

Unfortunately, they are probably still building Jetta Wagons during the original slot, just not with that engine, and not with the US as destination. No time to make quick face lifts (rear tucks?) .

*sigh* the fact that there is a 6 month delay shows how VW is behind Toyota in production techniques. Some of you may be aware of the 1997 Aisin Fire and the potentially huge disruption it could have caused. Instead of floundering, Toyota was back in production within a week instead of months because of how they managed things.

I see no reason other than the idiosyncratic ways of VW for not at least doing a "quiet launch" of the TDI or 2.0T as originally scheduled.

Wouldn't it be something if VW introduced a new model with the TDI engine only, and only later offered a gas-engine option? It would be great publicity, and free.

Of course the first time I suggested this was about 6 months before the Rabbit was rolled out. Still no Rabbit TDI, and after 12 months of sales I still only see about one Rabbit a month. (I see Mk5 GTI's almost every day.)

Yes, definitely. People need to realize the 2.5L was a replacement for the asthmatic 8v 2.0L—a base engine. The 2.5 is a vast improvement over that mill.

Those who are expecting a base engine to do more than provide reliable operation, adequate power, and decent mileage have overly high expectations for the objectives of a base motor.

I'm betting some people automatically bag on the 2.5 because it's the base engine, without ever having driven it.
