VWvortex: The New Volkswagen Tiguan« »

Wolfsburg, 28 June 2007 - With the first pictures of the new Tiguan Volkswagen is starting the countdown for the debut of it’s 14th model series. The Sports Utility Vehicle – SUV for short – will be presented to the public for the first time in September as part of the International Motor Show (IAA in Frankfurt). A combination of power and elegance characterizes the design of the new Tiguan. It was conceived as a borderliner between the urban world and endless landscapes, between business and leisure time. The Tiguan is a multitalent with driving characteristics that are just as agile as they are comfortable, high utility value and groundbreaking technologies.

It was a good idea to ditch the chrome grille from the concept to the production model. Now if VW will just carry that design language to the next Jetta...

They just need the damned thing to come out!

It looks so close to a Golf Plus it's embarrasing it's taken so long to introduce.

I think from those photos I like the off-road appearance package bumpers, which I don't think are coming to North America? Maybe it's just the angle, but they make the front appear higher off the ground and more SUV-like, tad more sporting. Perhaps from head-on the other version with its lower bumper grille would look more aggressive. Hard to tell without seeing more angles or it in person.

The concept did look a bit more aggressive (and I liked it a bit more), but VW actually came up with a great design for the production Tiguan.

They say the 2.0TDI BlueTec will be the engine we get, with around 140hp, and 220-230lb-ft of torque. It is due out at intro of the Tiguan or very soon after, and all future VW diesels, including that one, will be 50 state legal.

This should be a case of the right sized vehicle with the right engine!

I like it!

Sign me up for the 170hp BlueTec Diesel.

The styling on the production model in these photos is naturally quite toned down from what we saw in the concept version. But when I imagine it dressed in a brighter color with window tints and a smaller wheel gap, all the Concept goodness comes right back.

This should be a very nice, fun and versatile vehicle.

They are using the 170 hp diesel. Quit the hate speech.

Also, it favors the Hyundai Santa Fe quite a bit. That's not a bad thing. It looks quite good. Ever since they redesigned it I could not help thinking that it looked like it should have a VW badge on the front of it.

I can't wait to see this on the road.

For the person who said the Tiguan looks like the Golf Plus, it's a completely different vehicle on a different frame and will be produced in a different factory. The Golf Plus is build on the same assembly line as the normal Golf here in Wolfsburg.

I cannot say when the diesel engines will be available throughout the US, I am currently working on the DPF (Dieselpartikelfilter) and the problems we're having with it, but assured that it will be available for the US. I have no idea which engines will be available, I guess marketing or someone makes that decision. Note also that there may be a chance that when the Tiguan comes to America, the diesel engine may not be initially offered, there are many qualifications that need to be passed by each state's government and that can take a long time and costs a lot of money (the reason why the R32 in the US only comes with the DSG, if the manual was offered, the car would have cost $40,000 because of qualification costs to the government).

I like this interior color combination. Of course VWoA won't approve it for the US and we'll get exciting beige, thrilling light grey, and uplifting black... to compliment the 15 shades of silver/beige/grey they'll offer for the exterior in the US.

Have any of you noticed how these two pictures show different versions of the car? I guess one is the offroad version (don't remember the name) and the other one the "street" version (don't remember the name either). By the way, the offroad version looks closer to the concept car.

Edit: Here are a few details of the 2 versions: http://www.motortrend.com/road...iguan

"... a "Track & Field" package, which adds a different front fascia to accommodate a 28-degree approach angle, and an Offroad Mode that utilizes ABS, the Haldex, the throttle, and both hill descent and climb features."

"American customers will not get the Twincharger nor the "Track & Field" package (at least not initially) and will instead be treated to "Sport & Style" Tiguans (replete with an 18-degree approach angle and no Offroad Mode) ..."

Sounds like there is a slim chance that we will get the 170hp version --- but I doubt it. VW probably want to use a single Diesel engine (the 140hp) across the range. That one makes the Jetta's mileage look yet better, too.

I'll wait a while (given the expected price with AWD, heated leather and sunroof I'll actually have to... ). It's between the Tiguan, Jetta SportsWagen, and Rabbit for me, if the latter ever makes it as a Diesel in the US.

The front of the US version (street vs. off-road) is a bit busy looking, but generally, I like it. Please offer white and dark blue.

It is built on the extended wheelbase platform, like the EOS, right?

Modified by feels_road at 7:15 PM 6-28-2007

VW EV, plug-in Hybrid, and/or 1.4-2.0 VVT&VVL T/dual-charged FSI engines for the US would be useful...
