There are about 40 archived threads in the MK IV .:R32 forum alone on this subject. With many insurance carriers the car does have a special designation because of the higher horsepower than a "normal" golf. Go ahead and search "insurance" in the archived content of thie MKIV R32 forum. You will find an exhaustive amount of opinions and information.

I told my insurance company that it's a "2004 Golf". I pay 318 every 6 months (1000comp, 250 collision). Sounds cheap, but i'm 23 with a clean record, plus i'm through USAA.

If you're young and financing, then you're probably gonna pay through the nose no matter which company you go with, since most banks require 500 deductables.

I'm surprised they didn't ask for your VIN.

When I bought the car new, the VIN linked to Golf MK IV, but there was no R32 designation. After 6 months, my insurance payment almost doubled as the R32 designation had been put in place with the carrier.

I'm glad you are getting a good rate, but be careful that you are not committing fraud. Your carrier could decide not to honor any claim you might have in the future if they know that your knowingly misrepresented what your car really was to them.

Well, I hope when/if the day comes when you need to use insurance to replace damaged parts they don't just pay for the standard "2004 Golf" parts.
