Ed "Big Daddy" Roth's hot rod 'Orbitron' found- being used as trash bin outside adult book store in Mexico.Seriously.
http://blog.hemmings.com/index...found/ | Quote » | Actually, were this 1995, I wouldn’t have expected to find the Orbitron anywhere else, but since the explosion in Roth-mania since the man’s death six years ago, the fact that it served as a trash bin outside of an adult bookstore in Mexico is pretty surprising, along with the fact that nobody recognized it until just recently. Of course, before that, it was used in a carnival for several years.Looking at the pictures, it’s mighty rough, missing a lot of essential pieces, including the nosecone and the bubble top. But considering the length some guys have gone to not just restore, but re-create some Roth vehicles lately, I imagine this one will be hitting the shows again soon. I bet cleaning the trash out of the car must have been a trip.

Somebody call Joe Bortz in Chicago, STAT! (Bortz is famous for gathering and restoring the long-lost and forgotten General Motors Motorama cars of the fifties, and I'll bet he'd LOVE to have one of Roth's creations. That's just a sin. I grew-up loving Big Daddy. He was cooler than cool. Ask any boomer carnut.

Ed Roth made some really cool stuff... he also made some really bizarre stuff, too... this is a good example of the latter!

I bet Ed would get a chuckle out of that. Or be pissed. One of the two. Seeing as I never knew him, it could be somewhere in between too.

Well- you can scrutinize anything. Consider this custom car is just sitting on the street being used as a trash bin in a seedy part of town for a decade- and it still has its wheels!

At least he literally built his cars from the frame up. What modern "custom builder" does that? But, I see drum front brakes on a drag show car. yikes.

Oh, I wasn't trying to be critical of his work. It's all amazing. But so much stuff from that era is just so over the top! You don't see anything like it today... it's all the same, car after car. He was seriously creative and not afraid to try just about anything.

Those look to be Buick drum brakes. They were the hot set up back then. So much so that modern rat rods have created covers for disk brakes to simulate the look of the original Buick finned drums.

I am still amazed this car has so many original parts after being left on the street. That engine is surely worth a few bucks- even just in metal scrap value.

There's alot of old abandoned american iron all over Mexico. I saw alot of abandoned cars last time I was in Mexico. BTW just an interesting factoid; Ed "Big Daddy" Roth attended the same HS I graduated from. Back then it was pretty much all white and now it's pretty much all Hispanic.

Unfortunately, the Orbitron is one of Bid Daddy's less attractive creations, at least IMO. His imagination was limitless, but his aesthetics were, at least in hindsight, a little bit "whacked". But that is what made Big Daddy Roth so much FUN for car-crazed kids back in the sixties! He was probably more famous, at least among teenaged boys, for his wild cartoon creations, led by "Rat Fink", that he marketed by the bazillions on stickers and t-shirts back then. Big Daddy Roth is one of my happy childhood memories. Great dude. Freddy Flameout RULZ!

Look twice, save a life. Motorcycles are everywhere. If you think the Subaru Impreza hatch is ugly in pictures, see it in real life. I thought it was disgusting, then I sat in one and played with the bells and whistles. Loved it.

Mr. Roth's cars, along with all of George Barris' creations were so wonderful!!I distinctly remember attending the AUTORAMA! shows of the early 70's and seeing these cars, along with many crazy and wonderful, energetic designs.....I can remember getting "wood" as young boy at those shows.....girls were not part of that equation, but cars were.

Between Roth, Barris and Tom Daniel (the mastermind behind the wonderful Monogram models - see http://www.tomdaniel.com), these guys provided way too much hypermotormagination for this 10 year old to handle.Of course, I never saw the actual cars and only got to see photos during my twice weekly runs to the local newsstand where I would spend an hour reading before dropping a nickel on the counter for a few pieces of gum. The money I saved by not buying the mags, I spent on the models. To this day, the smell of good model glue makes me feel like I'm 8 years old again. Of course, that may have something to do with the fact that I now empty the entire tube into a bag before I sniff it... but that's another story.

One of the interesting things about Ed Roth is that, while his creations seemed to be the work of a drug-fueled rampage, he was actually pretty straight-laced and didn't delve into the drug culture the way folks like Von Dutch did. Folks who worked around him noted that "Big Daddy" had a work ethic bordering on obsessive, and it shows in how pervasive his creations are even now in the hot rod subculture.Last I remember, Roth was working on a new interpretation of "Rat Fink" in the mid-90's, powered by a Geo Metro 3-cylinder of all things. Anybody know what happened there?

I'm not sure what you mean by that. It's an immobile vehicle sitting next to an adult book store. OMG- look at all the casually discarded receipts!!!!!
