 VWvortex: Frankfurt 2007 - Volkswagen Up! Concept« »

Wolfsburg, September 2007. There are cars that endure for all times. They are icons of their type, masterpieces of craftsmanship and technology; they put ideas into motion, make progress tangible and sometimes quite simply make everyday life better, more practical and enjoyable. Many of these cars carry the VW logo. “Bug, Beetle, New Beetle”, “T1, Bulli, Samba bus, California”, “Golf, GTI”. Now Volkswagen is presenting – as a world premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt – a concept car that once again has the right stuff needed to move more than just one generation. It is a small, pure and high-spirited Volkswagen that pays tribute to its environment. The overall concept is marked by an innovative, clear, intuitive functionality. The name of the concept car: up! – a positive name that is a synonym for departure, activity, dynamics and the future. “For Volkswagen”, says Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member with Responsibility for Technical Development, “the response of IAA visitors will be a decisive test to determine whether the concept has the same kind of potential possessed by the Beetle at one time or by the Golf today.” Full Story...

I like the front end design of the car, but i highly dislike the rear. Hopefully that will change....if it is even produced

why not just introduce "The Egg"?
In 3 years cars will be completely round, with no detail and smooth anyway, so might as well get a start now.

Hmmm...in my opinion:

The front is a too 'cheesy-happy'.

The rear is really...'ugh'

The side view is actually ok for this type of small car.

Back to the drawing boards, VW!

I guess this is VW's version of the asstec, you can play chess in the back of your new UP!. Sorry, but just give us the friggen Polo already. This UP! is hideous and I hope it never sees the light of day again.

OK I'll throw my hat in . . . . I think it's awesome. Not perfect, but a huge step in the right direction. Diminutive size, rear-mounted 2 cylinder, it kind of reminds me of a rolling iPhone. I think the article overplays the 'intuitive controls' angle, but that was obviously a big part of the design as well. I've seen prettier cars from VW, but still, I can cut it some slack for being a concept.

I hope they make it, and I hope it comes with a manual.

how close is it to the production look? i think its great they have something to challenge smart. But yes, the Polo for america please.

I dont like how the body has some rounded forms (fenders and intakes, rear hatch) and some hexagonal edges (side windows and headlights) its not very coherant

ill echo that sentiment... good 'concept'.. hopefully the interesting ideas make it to a production vehicle (perhaps next gen polo): modular seating, small engine in the back, computer system and interface.

I think it looks great.

LOVE the front and back end design, hopefully they'll incorporate that into all future models soon.

And is the LCD multi-touch?
It'll be awesome if they have Apple work on the interface

You might as well quite dreaming about the Polo....Its not going to happen. Well at least not in the form everyone over hear wants it in. I have asked several people at VW if they plan on importing it. They said most likely it will never happen. Why? After they get the car to meet frontal crash test for the US it would no longer be the car it is in Europe.

I really like the UP! That in my opinion is a lot more likely to hit US shores. Since IMO it is a People's Car. i think it would be a home run with America much like the original Beetle was.
