 QUAIFE ATB Installed....Finally« »

I finally installed the QUAIFE ATB Differential in my '07 A3 2.0t. Not too bad of a job and worth it. The QUAIFE helped shave 3 seconds off my lap times at Laguna Seca. Down to a 1:47 from a 1:50.

Awesome! I've been waiting for someone to replace their DSG diff.

Did you do the work yourself? How hard was it? Did you need any specialized tools?

Thanks for the pics.

Very cool. Upgraded or OEM clutchpacks?

Now that I've seen the insides of the dsg, I can't believe I didn't think of it first.

Straight forward trans. R&R. No special tools required. I did not upgrade the clutch packs. Traction is awesome!!

Did you guys see the non replacable filter in the bottom of the case? There is a part number on the filter but is not available from VAG or any aftermarket source. Life long filter....life of the trans. I would recommend at least replacing the external "toilet paper" filter every 10k to help extend the life, you'll probably need to add 200-300ml of DSG fluid that would be removed when replacing the filter or check fluid level as VAG recommends.

awesome pictures. I can't wait to do this myself..

There is one pic of "clutch packs" but it looks to me like a 2-3 piece wheel. *shrug*

When are you going to do it?

I want to do it myself but I'm not sure I have enough information. I have the Bentley manuals and I'm pretty sure I have all the tools I need but I'm still a little hesitant.

It should be reduced significantly.. even with full drag slicks, typically your tires are your weakest link in friction..

So is the Wheelspin gone or reduced significantly???
What other benefits have you noticed after installing your Quaife LSD for the DSG? I'd hate spending all that money and the wheelspin is still there
Realising i Could've spent that money on a 19" rim would just be wrong...

19's will not help you gain any traction.. FYI.. they will make it look cool but not help you accelerate.. go with 16" lightweight wheels and sticky tires on the other hand.. that will help wheelspin..

and an LSD helps distribute wheelspin and power, there is no "Cure", if thats what your looking for you won't find it.. but as he said, this shaved of a considerable amount of time on a track day event because of power transfer and limited losses.

$1,500 for LSD (+ sales tax depending on source)
$0 for labor if you do it yourself (but I'm assuming if you're asking such questions you'll pay someone to do it.. so in that case $600-$1,200 labor, depending on quality, speed and reliability of shop)

$100 in seals, materials etc if you care to go factory, or you can RTV it.. FTW!!!

Is this a question or a statement?

Yes this is a Limited Slip Differential manufactured by Quaife in a DSG transmission

Cool.. so did you use l33t h4x0r ski11z to decode the DSG and make more than 256ft/lbs torque.. LOLZ...

Thanks for sharing though...

I have dropped a trans in a MKIV and other Japanese cars, did you experience any real hurdles in pulling this trans out vs others you have in the past.

I'm assuming its a, disconnect wiring, cables, etc. Disconnect axles from trans side, Remove front, rear, driver side motor/trans mounts. Lower drivers side, loosen bell housing, seperate, rotate, pull...

anything else really in the way?

Straight forward transmission R&R. You might have to loosen the charge air pipe from the intercooler to the throttle body to make life easier. I am not familiar with: "l33t h4x0r ski11z to decode the DSG and make more than 256ft/lbs torque". Please share any info on this subject. I have not had the car on a chassis dyno yet so I have no numbers to post.

It was meant to be a joke..haha.. Since you were doing a fairly involved upgrade to the DSG I assumed you had likely seen the DSG "chatter" around here. Anyhow, there are a bunch of Handi-Capable people (see retards) around the forum that saw a PDF saying that the DSG trans max rating is 256ft/lbs of torque. This is a factory designated load rating to save them from issues that occur when the motor is modified to produce more power (save them warranty money on people with 400WHP), HOWEVER there are a bunch of lemmings on the site that think that this car is magic and cannot make over 256ft/lbs of torque (this has been disproven by WHP dyno's but they still feel this one document trumps this real world experience)

Basically we need upgraded clutch packs to deal with over ~350WHP or so but till then the stock one is sufficient. And even over ~350WHP the clutch lasts about 40,000 miles and costs under $700, so its really not that bad.. just an afternoon of work to replace.

Nope.. you buy a service manual and have at it.. this isn't really a DIY type of job.. Slightly more involved than installing a FMIC.

Where do you get the service manual for tearing apart a DSG tranny? The generic MKV Bentley manuals don't seem to go into a lot of detail for the DSG. Is there a more specific manual?

There is no info on DSG dissasembly anywhere, not even from Audi/VW, just R&R procedure. Dissasembly is just like a 6spd manual transaxle with the exception of the control unit. When you do the job make sure you have new(just in case) axle shaft seals, new filter/seal, drain plug/seal, cooler seals, selector shaft seal, oil pan gasket, control module cover, silicon sealant for the case, 6 liters of fluid, and some solvent like brakeclean. I replaced a speed sensor that is routed next to the control module as there was signs of shafing at the aluminum case that could lead to problems down the road. Good luck! I'll see what pictures I have and possibly put together a DIY.

That's what I was wondering. The DSG isn't supposed to be serviced so they don't provide the literature. Do all the part #s for the items you mentioned show up in ETKA?

I'm debating whether I should do this now or wait for the warranty to run out. If I can gather enough info, I think I'll do it before.

How did you put this info together before you did it?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, all of the parts I mentioned show up in ETKA and are available the last I checked. After looking at a couple cut away pictures of the DSG transmission I went in for exploratory surgery. In a nutshell the DSG transmission is a 6spd manual transaxle controlled by an electronic automatic transmission valve body and hydraulics.

Hey,

To the OP did the transmission case needed to be drilled (Rivets) to open it or was it just bolted shut? I already have the Quaife LSD sitting in a box and am just waiting for a check and plan on doing the HPA upgrade too

I'm not the original poster but the tranny case wouldn't be rivited up..

I know the MT Diff is rivited though, I'm assuming the DSG would be similar. However from pictures it appears that it may just be a complete replacement unit VS a combinable component..

To the OP, was this a full replacement solution or was there a necessary disassembly of the OEM unit..

any pics of the two side by side?
