 Volkswagen Space Up! Concept« »

Wolfsburg, 24 October 2007 - The “New Small Family” from Volkswagen is gaining speed on its journey to the future. Just six weeks after the world premiere of the up! – the two-door city specialist – Europe’s largest automobile producer is now introducing the second member of the “New Small Family” at the Tokyo Motor Show: The space up! concept car. “The world premiere of the up! at the IAA in Frankfurt served as an initial test to see how the concept of our New Small Family would be received in Europe. And the results of this test were more than favorable,” says Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Head of Technical Development. Volkswagen’s chief engineer continues: “The second member of this new family now follows in the space up!. The small van shows that we are consistently exploiting every millimeter of space and creating an emotional design.” FULL STORY...

Cool. So many of these weid little concept vehicles companies are making (en mass at the Tokyo Motor Show) are just so ugly and awkward, but this one actually looks pretty decent...I think it's because of the larger wheels...it keeps it balanced and aggressive looking, despite its quirkiness.

Really like this Space Up! We need some tall roof vehicles from VW in North America.

Space Up! is a vehicle I would definitely shop if it were available here.

it's a better new xb then the 2nd gen xb is.
i don't think the wheels fit the car, but it's a concept so those will change . a nice high roofed (why did toyota chop the roof on the xb) box with fender flares, it works.

Re: Volkswagen Space Up! Concept »« »

Could VW be awakening from its long coma, at least with regards to their long-dormant former leadership in small and efficient vehicle design? This car has "winner" written on it where the Up! (I HATE that name) three-door was less successful, IMO. The nicest thing about this car is that it, to me anyway, has the look of a Germanic car design, which is something that VW's current lineup, as well as most of the contemporary German makers, don't possess to any great degree.

Do eet, Volkswagen.

Absolutely great job! An excellent small family mover!

Looks unlike anything on the market. Love the rear hatch window!

Go VW!

Now put some more effort into 'Das Neu Scirocco'.

This is what I'm stoked about.

Can you imagine how much fun this layout is going to be in the hands of an enthusiast? I'm assuming it's RWD, and rear engined. Just like the classic type 1.

People are going to have a field day with the swaps.

It's so amazing it's amazingly amazing. (Nerds will get the reference)

I'm really happy that they're going in this direction. This is the best VW news since 1967. Well, that may be a bit premature, but I'm really diggin' this idea. I'd still rather have the smaller UP! (I'm with you Larry, I hate that name as well.)

Quick question: If you end a sentence with UP!, do you use a period afterward?

Just like the IROC concept ended up being Scirocco, think Lupo instead of just UP.

P.S. I, too, prefer this to the two-door concept.

It's the first concept I've seen from VW in years, that peaks my interest.

I can see the door design aparently takes side impact protection into account.

What I wonder about is rear impact protection. When there is only a couple inches of space between your passengers' heads and the hood of an SUV there is only so much you can do.

But I like it. And I like it better than the 2 door UP.

So:

Keep Up! the good work.

Hook it UP! to a 3cyl TDI.

Dress it UP! with a bit of bright work.

Sign me UP!
