 a new Scirocco, a new thread :D« »

So I just came home with the '80 that supposedly has a bad fuel pump. Applied 12 volts to said fuel pump, and it happily fired up. So I'm guessing fuel pump relay is toast. So now I'm sitting here with my Bentley, reading up on this thing.

Rule #1

What are your plans for it?

well, my first thought is to fix it, drive it for a week, then sell it to fund my other 'rocco. But, I could just sell the other shell and only be out about $100 for a little while. The mk1 is definitely in much much better shape than the mk2, so I *could* keep building the 8v in the garage, keep the mk1, finish the 8v and MS, then swap it in. Decision making time right now.

Oh, did I mention I love people who have no idea what their car is worth? I picked up the mk1 for 2 hours of computer work, and HD and $250

I've been hearing that

and now I'm a little cornfuzed

I've got power to terminal L13 at the fuse-block, the fuse on the relay is *not* blown, I jumper between 13 & 14, but I'm getting no voltage to the pump leads. Guess this means I'm tracing down wires? But wouldn't the fuse blow if there were a short?

Keep the mk1. They look WAY better than the mk2, and are getting very rare.

There could be a quick connection/molex plug somewhere before the hot lead hits the pump, or the lead from the back of the relay socket at L14 might be disconnected for some reason. I read in the Bentley about this test, as well, and it should run the pump if everything is copacetic. You are correct in that if there is a short, the fuse would blow. Could you run a test line to the fuel pump from the fuse panel jumper to outside the car and see if you can get it to run? Then you know what you are dealing with, at least- a bad or disconnected 12V lead. You could also run another ground to test that out, too. Just my $0.02 as an idea.

EDIT- The 12V runs to the Cable Adaptor (T) behind the instrument panel, comes into that connector as a Black/Green, and out as a Red/ Yellow. The Ground runs to the common ground in the trunk area, and is a Brown, of course. Good luck!!

well, here's the relay, lol

that is what connects to L14, so I'm pretty sure that connector in the fuseblock is no good, I didn't pay much attention to the lead which was connected to it before, thinking it was just a ground. Turns out they bypassed the fuseblock for that connector, so I'm gonna go out and try this again, but using the lead instead of L14

well, not exactly sure which thing got it, but no shorts, I have a solid connection to the fuel pump now and 12v.

Now if I could just get that fuseblock back up in there...

I'm thinking that there is a bad ground as well. All I can get out of the pump is a very quiet click/hum kinda think when I apply power through that circuit. When I put my battery charger on the terminals, it buzzes along much nicer. Time to upgrade that ground I guess.

also, if I'm running the pump on my workbench, should I be able to feel any suction if I plug the inlet with my palm? I'm not quite so sure that I'm hearing 'normal' operating sounds...

you shouldnt run the pump dry, it uses the fuel to cool and lubricate the pump. bench test it with a bucket of gas and some fuel line.. im pretty sure there output values listed in the bentley of how much should be pumped out over x amount of time..

and 40 minutes later, I have a working fuel system again. Now I just need some fuel.

EDIT: slightly different topic, but still this car...

How do I go about switching this thing from the old style brake-light switch to the pedal-cluster mounted one. I know that the m/c switch type has plenty of issues and I'd like to update that if possible.

If it's the same as RHD cars, you need to swap the column for a mk2 one if you have one spare, or don't want to fabricate anything, otherwise, it's a fairly easy task to fabricate a new bracket and fit it to the current pedal box.

Yay! Cool for you- Are you going to run that relay with the bent pin like that, or will/ can you repair that connector at the fuse panel? Was the ground wire bad or weak as well? Just for clarification purposes.

As for your BLS question, I have no clues, but these other folks will point you in the right direction.

The ground was fine, it was just the pump. On the battery charger (50 amp) it would make some noise, which I thought was it operating. I'm mainly a diesel guy, so I have (had) no idea what a mk1 fuel pump was supposed to sound like. Picked up a good one from a fellow 'texer here in town, swapped it in, and now I know just what a good fuel pump is supposed to sound like. I'll be getting some fuel after work today and hopefully have it on the road ASAP.

How long has that car been sitting around, and was there fuel in the tank at all? You might want to clean the tank (how, I have no clue) to keep from trashing that new pump with whatever junk is in the tank. I am at work right now w/ no access to the Bentley, but you might have yours handy. This thought just popped into my skull once you mentioned a new pump, but I am sure you probably thought of this.

Anyway, good deal! Report back with your maiden voyage results!

I wish that were the case. There's a number of places where the paint is bubbling up, and while underneath, I noticed water dripping from the spare-tire well, with enough rust under the under-coating that it just peeled away :-\

it's only been sitting for about a month, and there is no fuel in the tank at all right now. Prior to that, it has been daily driven for at least 2 years.

well, it started. 2 times actually.

First, I just started it up to make sure it would. Turned off, check of fluids, headlights, turn signals, etc. Then started it up again, let it idle for about 20 minutes.

Shut off while I had to go back in the house, now it won't start :-\ And the fuel pump is still working, I can hear it when I turn the key to 'on'.

Though, should it come on every time? If there is residual pressure in the lines would it come on even then?

Back to the troubleshooting

well, the true maiden voyage went just fine, need to get the wheels/tires balanced (well, new tires really, bald as a grapefruit), and get a new blower motor, then it'll be mostly driveable. It was a little cold driving home after the GTG Friday night w/ the windows open to keep it from fogging up

could anyone tell me if the blower motor from the mk2 will go in the mk1? They were both originally a/c models. If it fits I'll pull the one from the '82, test it, and drop that in. Then put the wheels and tires from the '82 onto the '80 for now, at least till I sell the shell
