Yes, they can be. In all reality ALL modern cars are pretty reliable. Every manufacturer has a few lemons also. I wouldnt say VW has th 'best' reliability by any means but its certainly not something to really worry about,

They're getting better.

My '96 Jetta GL 2.0 automatic was a nightmare after 120,000 miles. Slipping transmission, lock fell out of the door, moldings beginning to all off, leaking sunroof...

The 2005 Jetta 2.5 manual it replaced was flawless, even in the first model year. It was as if I had purchased a Camry it was so perfect.

The 2006 Rabbit I currently drive is very reliable with a few hiccups here and there...i.e. front wheel bearings went at 12,000 miles, rear windshield wiper motor replaced after 3 months...

But yes, they're definitely on an upward trajectory.

Wilkommen!

You're young enough that people your age tend to think that having a failure in the first 50k miles is not reliable. Now I usually tell people to go test drive several cars that they think they want and buy what they actually like. You'll possibly have a few problems, but almost all cars are pretty reliable today. If this were 1975 it would be a different story altogether. Hell, '85 is a different story, but now it's... what year is this again? I must be getting old.

...Oh, yeah. 2008. No worries! Buy something cool. Of course, at your age I'd get a base Rabbit. It still has 170 freakin' hp. My first car had 50 horses and didn't handle as well as a modern truck. Come to think of it, my second car had 40! ('66 then a '62 Beetle!) Oh, and I crashed my first one doing something stupid. Be careful out there. (ROOT )

Buy a very slow car first and drive that fast.

Maybe at your age you can look at it this way:
Have you ever been able to pick up a never played before racing video game and pull a flawless lap with the fastest car in the game, first try?

Exactly.
Thats why you start out driving a VW Polo in Gran Turismo.

Wolfsburg, GERMANY - Volkswagen stands for the highest standard in manufacturing quality – a fact illustrated by the most recent surveys conducted by leading testers. This year’s DEKRA Mängelreport and AutoBild/TÜV Report both found the Volkswagen Golf to be exceptionally reliable. The Touran also received shining marks in the 2008 DEKRA Mängelreport.

The latest Golf came out the winner in the 2008 DEKRA Mängelreport’s survey of the compact class with a mileage of between 60,000 and 90,000 kilometres. The Touran achieves similar success in the report. Not only did it attain the highest ranking in this mileage class among vans, but it also came out tops among vehicles with 30,000 to 60,000 kilometres on the clock. These rankings serve to underscore the consistent high standard in quality of these popular models made in Wolfsburg, given that the 2008 DEKRA Mängelreport bases its findings on research done on some 15 million vehicles over a period of two years. The most important new aspect of the survey was the evaluation of deficiencies by mileage classes. DEKRA says this classification is a far more accurate indicator of the technical condition of a vehicle than vehicle age alone.

The Golf also clinched a very positive third ranking in the 2008 AutoBild TÜV Report’s survey of automobiles aged two to three years. Only 2.2 per cent of all the Golfs examined in this age class revealed any deficiencies – a result which is well above average (4.8 per cent). This, Germany’s biggest used-car report, based its findings on around seven million general inspections of 194 different models in total.

About as reliable as paying a hooker in advanced and expect her to meet you in the back alley 5 minutes later...

But seriously, like all manufacturers, they are hits and misses. Of the 4 I had, one was problematic none-stop, one was average and 2 were almost problem-free.

Re: Are VW reliable? (graffartist) »« »

To the OP-- Let's put it this way...Once mine got out of warrenty all sorts of electrical problems popped up and VWOA didn't care one ship about it. The ONLY reasons that I still have it is that it's paid for so I can insure it CHEAP, and repairs are USUALLY less than payments for 6 months would be. Being that I'm not working full time and I'm a student (in my 30s) all I can say is that I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER VW PRODUCT. Buy at your own risk...SUPPOSEDLY the MKVs are better BUT it's still early and mine was GREAT for the first year and a half of ownership. I would recommend shopping another brand.
