ive had NO problems in my 2 years of ownership, minus stupid idiot lights, which mean nothing.

My '96 Jetta GL 2.0 automatic was a nightmare after 120,000 miles. Slipping transmission, lock fell out of the door, moldings beginning to all off, leaking sunroof...

The 2005 Jetta 2.5 manual it replaced was flawless, even in the first model year. It was as if I had purchased a Camry it was so perfect.

The 2006 Rabbit I currently drive is very reliable with a few hiccups here and there...i.e. front wheel bearings went at 12,000 miles, rear windshield wiper motor replaced after 3 months...

But yes, they're definitely on an upward trajectory.

I bought a brand new car at 18 years old with my OWN money. If he has money, or if his family has money, then why is that of any concern to you?

You're young enough that people your age tend to think that having a failure in the first 50k miles is not reliable. Now I usually tell people to go test drive several cars that they think they want and buy what they actually like. You'll possibly have a few problems, but almost all cars are pretty reliable today. If this were 1975 it would be a different story altogether. Hell, '85 is a different story, but now it's... what year is this again? I must be getting old.

...Oh, yeah. 2008. No worries! Buy something cool. Of course, at your age I'd get a base Rabbit. It still has 170 freakin' hp. My first car had 50 horses and didn't handle as well as a modern truck. Come to think of it, my second car had 40! ('66 then a '62 Beetle!) Oh, and I crashed my first one doing something stupid. Be careful out there. (ROOT )

But seriously, like all manufacturers, they are hits and misses. Of the 4 I had, one was problematic none-stop, one was average and 2 were almost problem-free.

Will VAGCOM for beer. CAN connected cars only, sorry.

Last week, a friend replaced a rotten stupid vacuum valve on his Tdi 2002 and particles did contamine the whole vacuum circuit ... 1500$.
