 50W Reverse Bulb« »

Has anyone tried a brighter than stock reverse light bulb? Now that I only have one reverse light because of my rear fog, I'd like a brighter bulb. I found a 50W bulb at http://www.autolumination.com (called The Beacon), but I'm afraid I'll melt something or constantly blow the fuse.

"Great for backup lights and dark driveways!

Caution: This bulb is bright and hot. If using for constant-on applications they can damage plastic parts that are too close."

I would not use that bulb even thought the reverse lights are only on for short periods of time. The reverse lights in our cars are already pretty bright.

A red 1156 bulb or a 1156 LED bulb with a load equalizer.

50W is a risk. I use a single http://store.candlepower.com/796upgradebulb.html for my reverse light, as I have a rear fog. It draws 35W.

Additional specs on 796 can be found at http://candlepowerinc.com/pdfs/numerical.index.pdf

Good info.

Does turning on the rear fog help? I assume the headlights are already on if we're worried about the amount of light to backup.

The rear fog helps a little if you need additional backup light.

BTW, the bulb type is 796. I fixed the typo in the second line of my post.

Just buy a halogen bulb from pep boys. I have it and it works great also it doesn't melt the plastic. In my opinion it provides at least 50% more light.

Since he only has one reverse light now he probably wants to avoid being in or causing an accident but not fry his wiring or melt the taillight housing.

I do not care about the "look". I care about what I can see behind me at night. I will be adding wiring, euroswitch and changing to Valeo EU Golf LED tails when the weather breaks. In the process I will change from two backup lights to one backup light and one rear fog light, like the OP. In my case, I back up a 60' drive to back into a tight garage space, often at night. The potential 50% loss in backup illumination with the new tails is of concern. Optimizing the remaining backup light would seem to be a wise investment.

The halogen lamps appear to be the best bet.
--
since I am switching to EU LED tails, thought I should check to see if the backup lamp is the same.
Even though the outer section is LED, the new matching inner section (rear fog | backup light) are still filament lamps.

I don't think the LED tails use the same backup lamp as US OE?

BTW the fog lamp in this set is exactly the same part

Valeo LED tails from TM Tuning - inner right - backup light (protective film still in place)

Valeo LED tails from TM Tuning - inner right - backup light

to remove the lamp holder from the fixture, twist 1/8 turn counterclockwise, pull out.
The lamp holder is keyed, one notch is wider than the other three, so it only goes back in one way

Valeo LED tails from TM Tuning - inner left - fog light (protective film still in place)

Having the rear fog and only having one reveres light, I've been using this bulb for 3 years. No issues to date I installed it into my R and works the same..

Thanks for the input quailallstar. As I recall from previous posts, you had the Valeo LED tails on your Golf 5 and I did not see them in the list when you parted it out. Are they on the r now?
Is some of your experience with the 50w bulb in the Valeo units?

I sometimes stay in reverse up to 3 minutes, minimum 1 minute every time I park at home - most people don't do use it that long. I am still concerned about melting something.
---
oh, and I always wanted to ask - where did you pick up the Nordschleife decal that was on your Golf 5? I've found plenty of Nürburgring decals online, but not that variant ?

I drive at night a lot, always back into parking spaces, so it's just for safety while backing up. I'm not too into having "cool looking" lights. Lights are for function, not form (the bulbs at least, the housings are a different story, those change the look of the car a lot).

What bulbs did you use in there? I know you are big on LED's...I have an LED for my rear fog, but it's giving me a hard time (even with the load balancer you sent me a link to)

Hi Straz,
The bulb I used for my reverse light is a 3 watt luxeon type. It uses enough power that you only need to install the small 25ohm/25watt resistor to get it to work.
The bulb I used for the rear fog is a 5 watt model that uses enough power that no resistor is needed.

Well the bulb came yesterday. I put it in and put the car in reverse for about 1.5 minutes. I then checked the bulb. The bulb itself was very hot, the the plastic surrounding it was fine, just a little warm. I'm going to keep it in and just keep an eye on it for now...

Be careful using very hi wattage bulbs in the rear cluster, the plastic is not designed for it and even if they don't melt, which they might they will deform over time causing cracking and shortening the lifespan of the part.

If it happens, I guess I'll just have to get LED tails

This is an old thread.

I bought one of these bulbs back in March 2008,
been running it in my single backup light ever since.
So far, no problems.
And that includes my screwing up one evening.
Was doing some VAG-COM work (which requires key on)
and didn't notice the gear selector was in reverse.
Ran the 50 w backup bulb continuos for about 30-40 minutes.
Thought for sure there would be damage - it did get really really hot.
But so far, no melting, no problems ...

I forgot to give props to CafeCar for this recommendation. I've had two for eight months now and they've been fantastically bright. Much more than OEM spec'd bulbs.
