Tell them you have Progressive insurance and they recommended Safelite.
i did that for my driver side window and they took %40 off.
i really do have Progressive and they did recommend them and my agent told me to mention they recommended safelite and i would get a discount.
but i imagine anyone could do this because all i did literally was say "hi i have a broken window and Progressive said i should call you guys." let them quote the price first, then try that...

Abotu right. I never paid out as i get a new windshield once every 1 to 1.5 years covered by insurance, and in the state of MN its illegal for them to increase there rates because of it. I would shop around a bit but make sure they use authentic VW glass. I had a shop so it for me and the new windshield was pitted in 2 weeks. Had VW switch it out which Progressive paid for under lifetime workmanship promise.

I wish.

Tennessee has no such program. Mississippi used to do free repairs through insurance, but the repair companies got too greedy and claimed too many "hits" to get the maximum insurance payout allowed. As a result, free repairs go bye-bye.

A few months back my front window was struck my a large stone and cracked it pretty bad. Cost about the same with installation. Its because of the sensors in the windshield and what not that makes it so pricey.

Tell the company to go screw themselves. New GTI windshield from http://www.worldimpex.com is $203, installation from just about any good glass company $100.

I love Allstate. No rate change, no charge. When I asked my Agent about glass coverage he said, Allstate would rather spend the money to replace the windshield than to have me get in a wreck because I couldnt see and have to pay for the whole car.

How difficult is it to get a blue one these days?

... rather, I should say a blue one for a Jetta. I know there are a few versions between the Jetta and the Golf.

X2, I would want to make sure mine would get replaced with the Blue version as I have an 06. One of my favorite features is the blue tinted glass. Looks great when it has rained.

I believe glass is different from Jetta to Rabbit/GTi/R32. Blue glass is still plentiful. Either from an 06 or R32.

There are two GTI/Rabbit versions (early build and current build), right? I remember some debacle about rear view mirror mounts on the forum in the recent past.

That is bull****. Go to the dealer, order the windshield for $200 or so dollars (I believe mine was $219 including shipping), take it to a reputable installer that has non-conducive adhesive, and you'll be all set. Installation should be no more than $150, if it is, you're getting ripped.

to the other guy in jersey, pm me and i'll give you the number of the shop that finially ordered the window for me if you need it.

...just go to your local dealer, buy the windshield, toss it into the back of your GTI and go look for a reputable installer...

Maybe you suggest taking it out of the crate and folding it up so that it fits into the car....

It is so easy to say - "do this" or "do that" but the bottom line is that it isn't very easy to buy a windshield in one place and find someone to install it - aside from the fact that most places won't install glass that didn't come from them.

To the OP - what is your comprehensive deductible? Why aren't you going through insurance?

my deductable is $1000. that may sound high, but most financial material i have read advocates setting the deductable as high as you can, to minimize yearly rates. apparently that works out better for most people in the long run.

obviously there are exceptions to the rule. anyway though, i would guess that most peoples deductables are around 500, which would be over what i am paying for the windshield.

good point though...

You may want to revisit your deductible.... »« »

....the difference in comprehensive costs due to deductible is quite minimal - I used to do the $1000 deductible too but realized that a $100 deductible costs less than $50 each year extra. Over 10 years that is $500 or the cost of one windshield. In the last 10 years I've swapped out 3 windshields - costing me less than $1200 (the exra insurance plus 2 deductibles - MA had a non deductible glass policy) instead of $1500.

I've kept my $1000 collision deductible as that does make a huge difference...

I think the higher deductibles use to offer more benefit long term than they do now. I recently lowered both my comp and collision deductibles as there was less than $50/yr. difference between a $250 and $1000 deductible. You can do the math, but in today's world, the lower deductible makes sense to me. It sucks.

This is what I have done in the past. I think our comp. deductible is $50. That's all I had to pay when my windshield was replaced on on my old Mk4 GTI (through Allstate). IIRC, Allstate has a separate phone number for windshield replacement claims.
