This was a really great concept that never made it because of big oil lobbying.

It's not a car engine, but I'd nominate the R-4360 Wasp engine. 28 cylinders, 71 liters, supercharged and turbocharged, and 4,300 hp.

That Wasp engine was basically the last in the line of WWII-era piston aircraft engines produced by Pratt and Whitney. The jet engine essentially took over after it was produced. I suppose you could consider it to be the furthest evolution of the piston aircraft engine.

wow that image is way huge.

johns92jetta posted up about the Napier deltic engine, its a ship and train engine that has three cylinders with a piston at each end. here:

these things are very torquey, but also so complicated in order to service the engine you just simply get sent a new one!

I want more explanations!

how did they consolidate the 3 crankshafts? you'd think they would have to all be rotating at the same speed...or would they rotate together naturally?

this thing is blowing my mind!!!1!ONE1!!

There is a huge gear set at the back that takes all 3 cranks into one.
I wonder how hard it is to time?

I don't know what the hell it was called. It was on Monster Garage last night. A bunch of grease monkey artists made a rocket bike. The rocket was simply a large 'trombone' shaped tube. It ran on propane & gasoline. Went slow as hell, but lit up red hot, and spewed 20ft flames out the back.

Ford GT90 Concept:
V12, quad turbo. It was 2 V6s fused together: 720 HP

"The GT90's 48-valve V12 was a six-litre engine which, if Ford had ever produced it in volume, might have produced up to 720 hp (537 kW), thanks to four Garrett Systems T2 turbochargers. The engine was based on the Ford Modular engine. Two V8 engines each had portions removed, and the cut down engines were welded together. In total, this yielded a 90-degree V-12, with 90.2 mm bore and 77.3 mm stroke."

"the exhaust of which was claimed to be hot enough to damage the body panels, requiring ceramic tiles similar to those on the space shuttle to prevent this."

I loved this car is Need For Speed 2.

Mazda Millenia Miller cycle engine

i'm sure i wasn't the only one who booked it straight to wikipedia...so i'll save some of you the time

Quote, originally posted by Wikipedia »
This type of engine was first used in ships and stationary power-generating plants, but was adapted by Mazda for their KJ-ZEM V6, used in the Millenia sedan, and in their Eunos 800 sedan (Australia). More recently, Subaru has combined a Miller cycle flat-4 with a hybrid driveline for their "Turbo Parallel Hybrid" car, known as the Subaru B5-TPH.

A traditional Otto cycle engine uses four "strokes", of which two can be considered "high power" – the compression stroke (high power consumption) and power stroke (high power production). Much of the internal power loss of an engine is due to the energy needed to compress the charge during the compression stroke, so systems that reduce this power consumption can lead to greater efficiency.

In the Miller cycle, the intake valve is left open longer than it would be in an Otto cycle engine. In effect, the compression stroke is two discrete cycles: the initial portion when the intake valve is open and final portion when the intake valve is closed. This two-stage intake stroke creates the so called "fifth" cycle that the Miller cycle introduces. As the piston initially moves upwards in what is traditionally the compression stroke, the charge is partially expelled back out the still-open intake valve. Typically this loss of charge air would result in a loss of power. However, in the Miller cycle, this is compensated for by the use of a supercharger. The supercharger typically will need to be of the positive displacement (Roots or Screw type) type due its ability to produce boost at relatively low engine speeds. Otherwise, low-rpm torque will suffer.

A key aspect of the Miller cycle is that the compression stroke actually starts only after the piston has pushed out this "extra" charge and the intake valve closes. This happens at around 20% to 30% into the compression stroke. In other words, the actual compression occurs in the latter 70% to 80% of the compression stroke. The piston gets the same resulting compression as it would in a standard Otto cycle engine for less work.
