I buy all my running shoes / apparal here:

http://www.roadrunnersports.com

They normally give info as to what is good for what weather. Also, if you call, they are INCREDIBLY helpful on the phone, and very very friendly. Always ask what races you have coming up, your mileage, etc. And will offer suggestions based on your training.

Also, you can join their VIP club. It gives you discounts and free shipping on all their items.

They are based here in San Diego, great store that really cares about the runner. Prices for shoes aren't that great, but I usually shop there anyways because it's one of the few runner-focused stores out there.

x2.

I just dropped about 500$ on winter gear at RRS. I tried out the jacket today, about 40 degrees outside and I thought I was going to die I was so warm. This **** is no joke, I should be good to go all winter.

http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/products/ASW2319/#long_description

What I was wearing today^^^. Waterproof, windproof, vented, media player pocket with a grommet feeding the headphone inside the jacket and a pocket on the back for gels and such. Like I said I cn easily see this jacket taking me down to 20 degree temps, and even then it's thin enough to layer with a long sleeve tech shirt under it too.

Mizuno breath thermo top for when it gets below 20...then i could even layer the thermo top under the jacket and be uberly warm.

I had a weird run the other day. Feels like i'm coming down with some kind of cold... had a nasty headache and even a bit of a fever the other day but aside from that I just have a bit of a cough, so I was hoping it was just a regular cold. But when I tried to go for my run yesterday, whatever it is just ****ed my lungs. Going slower than my usual 'easy' runs and the lungs are burning like i'm doing a hard tempo run.

Weird... I don't remember it feeling like this the other times I've had colds. But aside from the running thing, there's nothing to suggest it's anything worse than your vanilla cold.

Well today was my last 1/2 marathon (and last race for that matter) of the year. Not a bad 2009. Especially considering I turned 40.

Managed two 5ks, one 5 miler, two 10ks, three 1/2 Marathons, one 30k and one Marathon. I dunno what's been going on, even though my training runs have been going great and getting faster, the three half marathons I did this fall got worse each time. I felt great this morning, did great the first half, but then just got slower and slower. Oh well. This was the coldest I've ever done a race in though, so maybe that had something to do with it. (mid-30's during most of the race).

But still, tells me what I need to work on this winter before the Pittsburgh Marathon in the Spring.

I did my last 20 miler today in preparation of the Richmond marathon in 13 days. That capped off a 62 mile week for me. It's taper time.

Hope you do well I've been thinking about rolling up there from VA Beach to Volunteer since I personally don't see any point in me doing this race since I won't be able to meet my #1 goal of going sub 3:30 and hopefully Qualing for Boston. I need to start getting back into things if I am going to do it at Shamrock in the spring. I haven't ran since Ironman Wisconsin.
I volunteered at packet pickup for the Blue Moon Wicked 10K this weekend and was very upset to see how 'effing lame people are in this state. At the most 20% of the people had any kind of costume and at that were pretty lame 70's kinda outfit with only a handful at most of memorable outfits.

Stupid question probably...

Anyone somewhat notice that running on one side of the road or the other affect how their run goes? Now I know you should always be on the left side yadadda yadda yadda, but it seems to throw off my stride, like I do better on the right side of heavily curved roads, the ones with a high center and very low sides to keep water off them. I'm generally right footed/handed, so maybe thats a strong side or something? All I know is I hate running on the left side.

I would say both sides are a must so you do not develop muscular imbalances.

Regardless of muscular imbalances, it is very unsafe to run on the side with traffic. With that aside, I have run so many miles on the left side that it feels weird to my feet when I have to run on the other side even for the shortest period of time. Having the road slope the opposite way throws me off.

Makes sense. I do hit both sides of the road on my runs, most of the time I'm on a flat side walk so it doesn't matter too much.

I just go with what is safest on my streets. For instance I'm going to take the right when there's 5 feet of extra space and a sidewalk coming up versus being on the left where its guardrail and no room for error.

Glad to see other people experience the same thing. It took me off guard one day when I switched sides and was all "wtf? my legs arg".

I try not run on the street at all. When youre forcing a lot more air than usual into the lower aveoli the quality of the air you breathe becomes that more critical than just your normal breathing. Surprised part of my 5k was a busy street, but oh well. I drive to a park.

Speaking of driving to go run somewhere, its very annoying. Its funny how much running has changed my perspective, now along with needing a garage my next home will need to be within walking distance of a park I can run at.

I don't know what Jacksonville is like, but are you in a suburb? I hate breathing car exhaust, too, and get more than my share when road biking. But I have many miles of residential side streets with minimal traffic that I use for running. It's not interesting scenery, but running is not a major part of my routine, so it's good enough for me.

And yes, the opposite crowning of the road does mess with me, too. In the summer, if I have time, I bike over to the local HS track and do laps there.

I hear yah. I've always lived within a couple minutes from a park. On my normal runs, I do drive to the park, but 2 minutes isn't bad. On my long runs, I just leave from my house and run to the park.

It makes life so much easier.

Finally starting to get colder in the Chicago area...I've been running on and off all year but average about 20 miles a week consistently since August...is there any reason why I seem to be more out of breath in colder weather, and after I run seem to cough for about 15-20 min? I don't seem to remember the phenomenon from when I played soccer in HS (grew up in the area) and have been in Arizona for college...so not too much cold weather to deal with there

Thanks

I'm debating putting in 3 miles or so today to see how it all feels. Just trying to decide how much I'll regret it tomorrow.

Do it. In the past, there have been a few times where I just kept hoping a pain would go away. Take a couple days off, maybe a week or two. Start up again and have the pain come back fast and be just as bad as before the break.

Sometimes it can be very simple. I've had doctors give me anti-inflammatories, maybe just some different stretches to do, stuff like that. I hate going to the doctor, but a quick visit can get you back much faster than pushing it and trying to figure it out on your own.

The fiancee talked me out of my run today telling me it would be a bad idea.

I'm swamped at work this week, but hopefully early next week I can make an appt. to have it looked at

Hey guys,

After reading another thread about how running the same 30mins every time can actually hurt your performance, I'm looking for some help with my running.

My training is mostly for triathlon purposes. The longest runs would be 5K-10K and maybe a half marathon. I'm very guilty of doing the same boring run each time I head out, and my 26min 5K times are showing it.

What would be a good training plan to use this winter? Please keep in mind that I will also be spending time in the pool and on the bicycle.

Thanks!

There are several things that will help your speed.

1.) Speedwork. There are quite a few different work outs you can do. Intervals (2 minutes at race pace, 1 slow, repeat. And keep building to where you can do longer race pace times). You can also do quarter mile splits. 1/4 mile at race pace, 1/4 slow, repeat. You'll want to do a warm up and cool down (2 miles warm up, 2 cool down is a good start).

2.) Distance. Building up distances will also help with speed. As you build your endurance, you'll find you can go faster on the shorter runs.

i was feeling great last night, stamina starting to come back to when i was only running (no lifting). felt like i was back to my old cruising pace of about 7:30-7:40 but i checked the watch and saw it was more like 8:30-8:40. that extra 15lbs ive put back on while lifting and not running for a long while sure does make a difference.

I did my first half marathon on Sunday. I finished just within my goal of under 2 hours (gun time of 1:59:58), so it was a personal victory for me. My legs are sore and my knees are killing me. It feels like I might have strained my LCL. It could have been because I didn't properly transition up to the distance from what I was running before (usually around 4 miles max). Luckily, I am having a physical this month, so I'll have the doctor take a look at my knee then.

Well I'm back on it again. Starting in kind of light, 11 miles so far this week...no serious pain to speak of.

I'll run 4 days this week, and then step up to 5 next week if I still have no pain, and attempt to ramp back up the miles relatively quick to get me back into a training cycle. Aiming for Malta in February this time
