What if There Were a Passat GLI? | « » 1:22 AM 5-5-2008 | |

Funny thing about the GLI. It’s an American phenomenon and a non-issue everywhere else. Jettas are for old people says a German friend of mine – a transplant who is now living in the USA. And that’s the case really. America’s GTI-spec Jetta sells solely in the USA – no surprise as the Jetta is the best-selling European car Stateside. Still, maybe expanding the GLI sub-brand in America and Europe might be a shrewd maneuver as performance enthusiasts also begin to feel the bite of fuel prices and the guilt of global warming. I know its a rather niche market...but VW needs sales in the US...they need something which attracts interest, even if its not a huge sales winner. The New Beetle served that purpose for quite a few years - people would come in to see the Beetle...and walk off with a Jetta...

is it november yet? the u.s. needs a middle class again and a gain in the value of the dollar. then volkswagen would pull market away from the masses that are "just looking for affordable reliable transportion", and be able to bring some halo names to more of its line up being able to build a business case. sadly i don't think now is the time. seems like vw and audi are trying to scale down and maximize profitablility in u.s.'s tuff economic times. but please if vehicles like this ever come to the table. bring a stick. thank you.

R36 is comparable to the R32 - AWD, 6 cyl, etcPassat GLI would be most comparable to the GTI. - FWD, 4 cyl, 2.0T, 235-250 hp, sport suspension, re-calibrated steering, cloth or leather interior, manual tranny or dsg, and special trim pieces to make it distinctive. (my specs)

This is a brilliant concept IMHO... And it would be a dream car those who are moving up and out of the GTI/ Jetta GLI segment. When my family starts to expand, i would love to have this as an option after my 5 door GTI.

I also think this is a great concept. I have a 4 month old and the current GLI just doesn't have the room necessary to carry all of the goodies. I am now looking to move into a Passat Lux Wagon, but I am going to miss all of the cool toys I have in my GLI (DSG, Aluminum Petals, Flat Bottom Steering Wheel, Bolstered Seats, Xenon Lights, etc...). I am probably going to wait for the Jetta Sportwagen if all fails.

I agree that the Sportwagen is really attractive, but a GLI Passat Wagon would be interesting, too. (My variation has a 4 cyl TDI plus great seats and sport suspension.) When I grew up, my family put 5 children in a Beetle. That won't work for today's families, but I can't help thinking a little simplification would make things easier. I know plenty of couples who needed a minivan or SUV to hold the stuff for their first child.

Good points I also have a 4 month old, she's the only reason I got rid of my Mk5 GTI. I would love to have the DSG and steering wheel in the Passat

For me personally, I think it's great. I have a 2dr GTI now, but I am planning to expand my family in the next year or so. I also want something a little more mature looking, but also be performace oriented. Unfortunately, the current Passat line-up just doesn't do it for me. Plus the VR6 Passat is a little pricey. I could jump to the Audi ship, but if they did offer the Passat GLI or a Jetta Wagon in GLI garb I would deffinately consider those first. Price it less than the current VR6 and I would sign up right away.

When I owned my 99 B5 I set off on a similar project to add the GLI attributes to my 1.8t by: Badging, Adding a 1.0 bar chip modifying the exhaust Upgrading the Brakes Adding mesh grill to both upper and lower grilles I gave it a funky two tone interior All leather in pearl grey and smoke grey A Three spoke steering wheel and some Monstor 2 peice 18x8.5 Speedline corse wheels with 235/40 VR 18I called it the PHANTOM GLI since a phantom in the car world is a model that does not exist. Since I have sold that car and bought a V6 Touareg the urge to buy a B6 Passat and replicate some of those modifications have entered my mind. More than likely my next care will be a 2.0t FSI passat but I am not yet sure if it will be a variat or saloon. George the idea is a great one, it is a way for you to adapt to your ever changing life with out driving a "weeney mobile". The appearance and performance of a car is what fuels the automotive aftermarket. If the North American buyer can't get the R36 they should be entitled to at least a GLI. A sporter version of a 2.0T sport package. Just like a GLI Jetta the options could be limited. to exterior color, Tranny choice (DSG, or stick), Leather or plaid interior, and of course some "Huffs" could be used. Options could be limited to : Tranny choice navi bixenons wheel size Leather or cloth climatronic The suspension and wheels could be raided from the parts bin The sport seats could be derived from the sport package of the passat with the GLI Plaid. Which would only leave the body styling details to be ironed out. This could be sold at or slightly above the MSRP of a 2.0T with the sport package. The CC would be nice if you like a car with a low roof line and did not give rides to adults too often. This is why the GLI looks even better. This also would add instant gratification to someone who wanted a car like this and did not want to build it. The R. Line is the corporate high performance line while the individual line is the exclusive special order line. So VWoA should not have an issue offering us a GLI line that is exclusive to the Unitied States. It is about time we get a four banger that carried a 240 hp or 250 hp wallop when you need it and the simplicity of limited options if you don't want all that luxury stuff to laden down the car.

Not sold in the US, and the article is aimed at US readers. So no, they do not already have one. As for jettas being for old people and GTIs for young guys? I'm a 30something female and *I* drive a GTI which isn't stock. You just can't stereotype with VWs.

Not bad, but I figure it would need to be G_I, where _ <> T or L. Since VW is bent on separating the GLI and GTI from their Golf and Jetta counterparts, it would be nonsensical to also call the Passat a GLI.Actually, it would make as much sense as calling the 2.0TFSI motor a 2.0TSI. That could very easily be confused with the actual TSI line of motors, I'd think. Oh wait...

Well being the Passat is going to be killed off soon and the Passat CC is never going to be marketed to a "Passat GLI" crowd, ... it's never going to happen For now, we can only mod. Put in aluminum pedals. Chip it. Make the steering a little harder w/ vag-com, Paint the grill gloss black, springs, and throw a set of huffs if that does it for you

I think they'd be well suited to take a page from the Audi playbook and come up with an "R-Line" trim package, similar to the Audi S-line. Not a full-blown powertrain makeover, but a package with some sporty add-ons that would set it apart from the vanilla Passats. Seats, steering wheel, wheels, springs, etc. Keep it as a 2.0T, FWD only model and you'd appeal to both the enthusiasts and the fuel-conscious. -Brett.
