Boot Camp vs. WMWare vs. Parallels« »

I have a 2.4ghz iMac with 10.5.2

I want access to install Windows XP SP2

What are the pros and cons of each of these tools (cost aside) so I can determine which is the best choice for me?

Leaning toward Boot Camp cause it's free but not sure I want to reboot everytime I want to access my Windows install.

Thanks

thats about the only downside to bootcamp. Try it, all you can waste is the time installing it, which is minimal not counting whatever apps you install.
Parallels will be slower, so would VMware but I've never used the later.

I use both bootcamp and parallels, bootcamp for games, vagcom; parallels for non processor intensive windows computing. You can download a trial of either I think as well.

What are you interested in running? Games, apps, both?

Why not consider Virtualbox as well? Version 1.6 just came out a few days ago with lots of improvements.

I don't game, just need it for occasional IE-specific stuff, Office 2007, and just to have a Windows XP install to access outside of my work laptop. I could use Office 2008 on the Mac but would rather just stick with 2007.

Is there any downside to installing it on Boot Camp? Does it leave any traces if I ever decide to remove it one day or does the whole partition just go away nice and clean?

Dunno what Virtualbox is and just picked these 3 choices since they seem to be the staples for running Windows on Macs.

If you choose to remove bootcamp, just run the bootcamp setup app in applications/utilities and it will completely remove the partition nice and easy.

Forgot about VirtualBox, it is free
http://www.virtualbox.org/

Edit: if you just use IE and office on windows, I'ld go with one of the virtualization setups

VirtualBox is the fastest. VmWare is slightly (almost unnoticably) slower and Parallels is sinificantly slower. They're all more convinient than dual booting because you don't have to leave your main OS.

Just start your VM, move it to another desktop and 15-20 seconds later (VM's boot a lot faster than actual systems) the OS is running. It's way faster/easier than shutting down your OS, booting the other OS, then shutting down that OS and booting back into your main OS. The dual boot route also doesn't allow for an integrated workflow. For example, if your working on a task and you prefer using an OS X app for part of it and a Windows app for another part it isn't really possible with dual booting.

VirtualBox doesn't have as many of the cool integration features. It runs an OS in a window and can run windowless mode (not sure if this is on OS X yet as I use the app on Linux). VMWare and parallels have a lot more integration features. VirtualBox doesn't have cool things like drag and drop or dock support.

I've been playing with the new VirtualBox, and it is impressively fast, considering I'm also running folding@home at the same time.

I run a Bootcamp partition and also boot the bootcamp partition in Fusion. That way I don't have to reboot to use windows if it's for something piddly, but I CAN reboot into windows to game or whatever.

None yet, need to scrounge up the $$ for a Vista license and either VMWare or Parallels. Boot Camp is free but I would only use Vista for IE and Office (both rarely) so I don't wanna have to reboot the whole machine just to jump into one of those...

I'm using VMware fusion....works perfectly. Free to try as well so you can see if you like it first. I like being able to just use Winblows by booting it like an app on my Mac whenever I need to.....no re-booting involved. I run Ubuntu as well.....I liked VMware so much I ended up paying for it after the trial. Well worth it. Haven't tried the others though.

I use Vmware Fusion... If your going to run more than 1 VM at a time make sure you have 4gb of ram. Unless you like to close out most of your apps just for vmware to run quick.
