yeah, that's an oil cooler. i've seen the drifter folks doing that to get more air flow through the cooler mounted there. personally, it screams bad idea to me, but hey... I never cared about the whole JDM goofy trend thing anyway

This is new to me...

Could someone give a background on what these cars are all about?
I'm NOT gonna bash it, I'm open to anything and I actually kinda like them (except the xB).

It seems like they have a similar feel to rat-rods in terms of the quirky-ness of them or something. (btw, I like rad-rods )

Re: Bosozoku style hitting SoCal? (Dieselstation) »« »

The xB is an example of the extreme end of "vanning" style with some "yanky" style influences. The Corolla wagon and Cressida are straight up "yanky" style. The 240SX is an American rat-rod look with yanky style and modern drifting style influences.

To sum up the various "JDM" trends:
Bosozoku: literally means "young, rough tribe" - analogous to biker gangs in the US. It started with working-class kids in the '60s who felt left out of Japan's economic boom.
Yanky: cars with an exaggerated '70s/'80s Japanese touring car racer/drifter look. It came out of early drifters and bosozoku in the '70s. All about show now.
Vanning: blanket term for the various types of modified vans. Some look more yanky style, some look like mecha from anime, some are rolling party wagons, some have a more VIP look, some look like '70s American custom vans.
VIP: "gangster" style, modified luxury cars... less ostentatious than American "bling" style but still a display of conspicuous consumption.

The biggest thing at car shows in Japan right now is actually kind of a riff on the "import show car" or "rice" style that originated in SoCal in the late '80s and hit its peak a couple years ago. Lowriders are also big, and various vintage looks.

Upon further inspection, you are correct. It is a photoshop. I didn't even notice when I posted it. Here is the original.

Haha, so now ricers are gonna be the next cool JDM trend?

And did any of this Japanese interpretation also take cues from post-apocalyptic anime?

It looks comic-book cool.
