 So I redesigned the Beetle.« »

It's a well-known fact in TCL that the New Beetle is a chick car and none of us would be caught dead owning one without a few good mods.

So, I redesigned it to have the mass appeal that the old one had. The current one is too large and looks like a huge marshmallow.

Tell me a. how much you like the redesigned version and b. what you like or do not like (be specific.).

The current one for comparison:

I always start with a profile sketch...

Moving to initial quarter sketch...

Second quarter sketch...

And the final rendering...

What is up with those wheels? Headlights are too squinty too.

Now, with some work, I could almost pass this off as a 356 renewal. but I'm sure some people will disagree/

Problems:

1. Headlights look goofy, too small for the car, and being oval looks odd.

2. Wheels are comicly huge, except on the first pic.

3. It does not have a Viergang Fuchs logo on it.

Otherwise it looks pretty good.

If its a beetle.... it has to be very cheap, and very basic in my opinion.

That's a cool-looking picture and all, but you might be kidding yourself if you think the one you drew will have universal appeal. It's clearly just a highly stylized (form over function) re-rendering of the original bug.

you got something the first picture, the side of it looks like what the side of a beetle should look like more hood in the front. I like it though. better than the bubble of a car VW has now, that's what they should of called it the VW bubble not new beetle

The current New Beetle is still selling fairly well (for a VW, about Rabbit level) even after 10 years of sales. VW just had a press release about 10 years of sales this past Friday.

When I saw the side profile I was like "Wow, that's what it should look like!"

Then when I scrolled down I was disappointed. As others have said, the headlights are too small, and they are ovals. Also the wheels look too big in the 2nd and 3rd pics.

I think it's on the right track though. It just needs some tweaking.

Keep that profile no matter what. It has that chopped look like some guys do with old Beetles and it looks great. Not like the half circle shape of the current Beetle...

This is true, but was the original bug not stylized? My point was to make it so that guys on here wouldn't complain that it was a chick car (no offense to owners) and would like it over what is currently offered. I'm sure the original didn't have immediate universal appeal - it was a car for the people - a Volkswagen.

I don't think it is necessarily a form-over-function re-rendering, because the 'function' aspect is taken care of by its being a daily-able car, especially if it's over a very simple, inexpensive platform.

To everyone else:
Yes, I know the wheels are too big. I'm not particularly good at rendering wheels.

And I realized that I didn't make the fenders bulge out at all; if I had done so, it would look much more Beetle-like.

I may try to do one more like the profile view sometime soon, meaning within the next few weeks, if I can find time; my schedule is pretty busy.

In the mean time, I'll do some more sketches, but make them sharper.

I've seen some other renderings that might provide some inspiration as you refine it. I like the chop-roof profile, I just think it got a little exaggerated as you worked. Go for the realistic proportions and details.

Okay so i'm liking the thought here. I would drive an old beetle, but wouldn't be caught dead in a new one. I think that the profile was a good start in the right direction, but when you gave it some perpective things started getting a little quirky.

First off, the wheels are way too big.

Second, the headlights make it looks awkward. I'd go with a bigger head lamp or work on how it fits into your theme a bit more.

Third, the colors in your render are hideous. Start with a basic grey or something less obnoxious.

Lastly, why don't you get yourself some 3d modeling software or photoshop and put together something nice, or get a protractor and work on your lines a bit.

BTW i really think you were on to something with that first profile sketch, i'd like to see that initial thought pushed a bit further. Really, i mean i think this idea has legs!

3D modelling software is hideously expensive, requires a newer computer, and is very hard to find for a Mac.

Photoshop I can do, but not really ground up, plus it takes a looooong time.

Good profile. Would this be rear-engined?

The headlights should be bigger, but the shape is fine. Wheels should be definitely smaller.

The Mini Cooper and Fiat 500 had their origins as inexpensive, mass transportation. With the success of the New Beetle, BMW, Fiat, and a bunch of other manufacturers decided to follow VW into "Retro", and "Premium Small Cars". The much loved Mini Coopers are selling for $30,000.00, but VW should not be selling a $20K Beetle? I don't understand the hate for the New Beetle, as it has been reborn into a modern car. By the standards that the NB are judged, Jeep's Wrangler would be a "fail" because it has auto-locking hubs and roll bars. The 911 would be a "fail" because it can be had in 4WD. The Corvette would be a fail because it has exposed headlights, and a monochromatic paint scheme. Heck, TV would be a "fail" because it is broadcast in color, to screens that are only 2 inches thick! Time and tech march on, and so should cars. Give the NB a break.

I like the first profile one. The rest look kind of over-the-top and ridiculous to me. Too cartoon-ish.

I can see what you're trying to do, to make it less of a chick car. Sleeker, slightly pointier styling. I like it, but I think the headlights should remain circular. That strikes me as one of those styling cues that just shouldn't change from generation to generation.

Overall, go with the profile you drew and dial the rest back a bit. More sleek and realistic, less cartoony.

Not bad

It's style man. Style is everything. Style is not to be confused with class. A Mercedes Benz is class because it represents money; however, chilly dogs have absolutely no class but a great deal of style. And punk rock, new wave, whatever you have, reggae, rastafari, haircuts, what have you are all different kinds of styles. None of them, however, have any class. I got class.
