Replace or fix rear speaker in VW Passat (b5)« »

The left rear speaker in my VW Passat is gone flooey and my radio cuts out intermittantly. I took the car to a car audio place and they told me the set up is that when a speaker is bad, the radio shuts off automatically to save it from being blown. He quoted me either $450 or $300 for a set of rear speakers. I do like to listen to my radio, in fact I really miss it right now but I am not willing to spend that much to fix it Any suggestions that are less costly?

I am a 63 year old widow and not very mechanically inclined so it has to be fairly simply to handle or it has to be something another person can handle for me fairly simply. Please help if you can

if you car have stock radio and speakers I don't really know why it shut off by it self it may be a protection for the radio like they said. but if you don't like to listen to music to high just get a pair of pioneer, alpine speakers for the car may be $80 to $100 and pay some one to get them install. Sorry you are far I will do this for you for a glass of orange juice.

if you go to circuit city they will charge you about 225 labor and speakers include.

Marcy,

Sorry to hear about your speaker problem. I had a front speaker go in my Passat, and the VW replacement speaker alone was $280 (covered under warranty). So, based on that, it makes me think that the speaker shop you visited would be replacing your rear speakers with non-VW speakers. This isn't necessarily bad, but it may not be the cheapest fix.

Do you still have a standard radio system? If so, you might call a local VW independent mechanic (or even the dealer) and ask if he can install a speaker from a salvage yard or a generic brand VW-compatible speaker at reduced cost. This way you're paying for just the one speaker that is damaged, and the replacement speaker will match the "sound" of the rest of your speakers.

While it isn't the hardest thing I've ever done, taking off the door panel and removing the speaker would not be something I would recommend to anyone who does not regularly do that type of thing. On our cars, the speakers are riveted in (rather than screwed in), making them even harder for do-it-yourself repair.

If you currently have your original VW radio and speakers, I would ask some questions before having someone work on your radio system (such as Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.)

I know very little about sound systems, but I believe that the factory system on Passats has an unusual ohm-rating or something like that, making finding a replacement speaker a bit more difficult. Anyway, my point is that you will want someone to fix it who is familiar with VW wiring so you won't get a weird sounding replacement speaker system.

If you don't find a mechanic who is helpful, I've had luck calling a few local audio shops (smaller places) and asking them if they're familiar with VW systems before having the work done. The folks at Best Buy & Circuit City aren't all bad, but they do have a bad reputation around here for not knowing the specifics about our vehicles and possibly messing things up even more.

Good luck!

124 bucks from my dealer. If its the monsoon system the rear speakers use an of the wall 2.3 ohms. So matching it with something from best buy wont work. Just get the correct speaker from vw if its a monsoon system.

I did all the speakers in the car for that price. The process is fairly simple, however if you're not mechanically inclined, you might want to leave it to your local stereo shop. A decent pair of speakers should run you less than $120.00 (they only come in pairs and a good 6.5" Pioneer should do it) and the install should be less than $50. If you pay more than $200.00 for this job, you're overpaying. You don't NEED to replace the speakers with VW speakers. You can use any 6.5" just make sure that the Nominal Power Handling is around 40 watts or above for a factory radio. That job should take about an hour or two at most.

Personally, from what you said in your post, I'd ask how much it would cost to just unhook the faulty speaker. If your not worried about perfect sound quality, just use the remaining 3 and enjoy the music. have you tried to turn the fader to only the front speakers? Sometimes that will work in your cars situation.

Thanks to all of you who responded to my original posting. Does anyone know how to remove the rear door panels on the B5 to replace the rear speakers? If you have any suggestions or diagrams, please send link or info.

Thanks,

Marcy
