 GTI W12 Spotting in Virginia: A Waterfest Preview« »

Poll anyone in the enthusiast scene and they’ll tell you that Waterfest is the event of the summer. Fourteen years running, you’d think the mammoth show, drag-races and all-out vendor extravaganza would stumble here or there. It hasn’t, and continues to flex its dominance in the American scene. This point made crystal clear to us recently on a visit to Volkswagen’s new headquarters in Herndon, VA.

Totally. Thing is, it's valued at something like $5+M, so finding insurance for it is difficult.

Also, it gets quite warm inside. Note no engine shots. The engine is behind the plexi-glass both inside the car and out. I think the only way you access it is to drop it from the chassis. The car is nuts, and I'd imagine a handful to drive at full power. I suspect it's been a bit de-tuned though.

I would be more impressed if they we could bring something over that could stay, and not tease use.

i.e. the Scirocco, TDI on multiple platforms, 2 door Audi A3 to name a few.

Don't get me wrong, it would be awesome to see this beast.

Did anyone see the test of this car on the show Top Gear?
What a complete piece of **** it was.
It ranked only 1 second faster than the r32 and it has more than double the hp and cost what to build?
Another pig.

Too bad VW cant get their **** together with all the resources and cash they have.

Well, in fairness to VW, this was more of a "lets throw some parts together for fun and see what happens" than an attempt to build a ne plus ultra race car.

When VW gets their **** together you get cars like the Nardo.

Second this, I watch top gear a lot on youtube as well as BBC. This car is great for straight lines and that is all. and before I get flamed, let me say that all three host praise the MK1 and MKV GTI. They are not biased people who only love their supercars. Also the STIG never lies!!!

That pretty much sums it up.
The thing is...golfs, gtis or whatever were always so well-known for their handling and nimbleness.
This car is anything but well handling or nimble.

I did get a ride around the parking lot in it. I wasn't driving, but I did get the full throttle experience. I've driven the much heavier Bentley Continental GT and Flying Spur with the same engine, much more weight and less hp and they were much faster. I suspect VW has this thing de-tuned and that's likely how it went to the boys at Top Gear if that's all the better time they got.

I drove the R8 V12 TDI in March and the technician minding the car said the same thing. It was only tuned to about half its available torque. Why? Journalists like me could easily do damage to their multi-million dollar car. Personally, I still am appreciative that we get seat time, to write about the car and to experience it... even at partial power.

Here's a link to the R8 V12 TDI drive BTW.

No one said it wasnt fast. Even Top Gear said it was fast...in a straight line.
The problem was that it could not get thru a corner fast to save its life. The handling was totally horrendous due to the short wheel base and the weight bias being so terrible.

Whether it makes 900hp or 100hp it wont handle any better.

On the Top Gear show (and elsewhere) wasn't there something about it being limited to 50% power in 1st gear, 60% in 2nd, and then finally getting full power in 3rd? Or something like that?

I've always kind of thought they should have thrown Quattro AWD in there too.

Not on Top Gear and a lack of power, to reiterate, would not affect the handling.
Quattro would mos def help with the handling.

the car is a show car. It's not designed to go around a track. VW could build this car, and build it well. It's purpose is not to be a production ready car, just a "Hey, look what we could do." They didn't spend the time tuning the suspension. Just be glad the car actually moves on its own power. Most show cars do not.

Totally right.

The fact that the torque is limited and some buttons don't work is no reason to hate on this car. There is always haters The styling of it alone is enough to get me excited and the sound of it is orgasmic. Who cares if it can't set records on a track. It would still blow the doors off your average car. It really wouldn't be that hard to make it a track car, but if you spent that kind of money on a one of a kind car, why would you want to take the chance of recking it anyway?

True - the car did not perform well, but then again most any other "show" car would not even be driveable if built by another manufacturer. Would you expect a mid engined 12 cylinder compact commuter car to be nimble?

So I have the exact opposite reaction, I'm highly impressed these thing even moves under its own power instead of being a prop on a stage. They aren't even going to build the car but so to put this much time and resources into it is awesome stuff...and all just to get us enthusiasts dreaming big.

Same here. IIRC, this "showcar" was built - and parts were borrwed from all over the VAG universe - in only a couple months- I believe the top gear episode has the exact time frame. Its truly awesome- Imagine if they spent a year designing and modifying it? It makes you wonder what the limits are on this platform.
