given the way that the bottom of the truck looks like it bends and buckles as the roof crushes the truck.. i would have to put money on atleast the driver not being ok after that.

I hope everyone was ok though.. thats ugly.

At approximately 3 PM, Tuesday, July 2, a 2008 Dodge Ram 2500, pulling
a new travel trailer, hit the corner of the Texas State Bank Drive-In
on Tenaha Street, causing the complete awning to come to the ground.
Luckily, the driver of the Dodge, Mickey Miller, of Garrison and his
10 year old son were able to exit their vehicle uninjured.

According to Miller he was circling the bank to park on the other side
when the corner of his travel trailer caught the corner of the bank
awning. Next thing he heard was a rumble as the awning started falling
against his driver's side door. Somehow he was able to unbuckle the
seat beat and exit the other side of his truck as it was falling.

Mark Ivy of Texas State Bank stated that the main lobby would be open
for business while the drive-in is being repaired.

I dunno, it's probably not every day that you have a Dodge Ram towing a 12,000 pound trailer slam into something like that, but still, it looks almost like a game of "find the load-bearer" and the Dodge just won the jackpot.

I agree...I would imagine those are mainly constructed for simple weather protection...and designed mainly with vertical forces taken into mind - not so much massive horizontal ones.

It's style man. Style is everything. Style is not to be confused with class. A Mercedes Benz is class because it represents money; however, chilly dogs have absolutely no class but a great deal of style. And punk rock, new wave, whatever you have, reggae, rastafari, haircuts, what have you are all different kinds of styles. None of them, however, have any class. I got class.

Not at all...

And that, my friends, is why wood construction should only be used on residential structures. That awning should have had steel posts imbedded into concrete piers, with steel I-beam spanning over the lanes for horizontal support. Looks to me that they had small steel posts tied down with anchor bolts only. Had they imbedded them in the concrete that probably wouldn't have happened.

Actually according to the article, he was trying to go around the ATM, not into it. Besides, where he lives, affording that kind of trailer is no big deal .

Why should it be?

Because in a structure that houses something that cars are driving in-and-out of on a regular basis, there should be forward planning that there is a high probability of someone hitting some part of it. It didn't even look strong enough to hold itself up if a simple car had creamed one of the posts.
