Most obscure or esoteric derivatives of mainstream car« »

I seem to recall a similar thread in TCL a few years ago but I can't find it. Basically, I'm looking for some rare, interesting, esoteric, perhaps even down right bizarre derivatives of mainstream models. I'm not looking for rebadges... that's too simple (so don't post any pictures of retired VW models still being sold in developing countries). I'm looking for weird body styles or re-purposed drive train. Basically, the derivatives has to be recognizable as being based on the mainstream model and they don't have to be from the same manufacturer. Post a photo of original car and photos of the derivatives.

For example:

Gen 5 Mazda 323

Fairly common, mainstream compact car sold in many places, which after many lives and iterations, gave birth to...

Ford Bantam

Completely whacky pickup truck made in South Africa based on the Gen 5 Mazda 323/Ford Laser.

Peugeot 405 (it's common in Europe):

Iran Khodro 405 GLX:

It looks the same, but they actually took the FWD 405's body and converted it to RWD! I believe they used the drivetrain from their previous Paykan model, which itself was based on a 1967 Hillman Hunter.

The Concerto itself was based on the Civic platform (it replaced the prior Civic-based Quintet - clever).

So, aside from the Del Sol (which is really a targa), the 216 Cabrio is the only Civic-based convertible from the factory.

Good point... I suppose you could construct the chain starting from the 1988 4th Gen Civic, which became the 1989 Concerto, which became Rover 214/216, which eventually spawn the odd looking convertible. A strange trip though...

I don't think the car pictured is a Monteverdi, but you are right about its origins and underpinnings.

This is a Monteverdi Sierra. It definitely has a little more panache than your average Volare.
